A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols This disc could be more succinctly titled Christmas for Anglophiles. Few sounds are more British than the boy soprano-dominated Choir of King's College in Cambridge. And the group is heard--in some sections recorded live--in an actual Christmastide service amid the generous reverberation of a cathedral acoustic with little more than a tasteful though austere organ accompaniment. The repertoire isn't just conservative, traditional hymns and carols. One is harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). The downside for some listeners--at least on repeated hearings--is that the entire service is heard, sermons and all. Others may take this in the spirit of a Paul McCreesh liturgical reconstruction, with congregational singing included. --David Patrick Stearns

DVD-A Fingerstyle Christmas-Guitar Arrangements to Seven Beloved Songs and Carols
DVD-A Fingerstyle Christmas-Guitar Arrangements to Seven Beloved Songs and Carols These seven traditional Christmas songs and carols have been specially arranged so that even an early-intermediate guitarist can play them, but more advanced players will have much to learn as well.

Drawing on his experience as one of America's most popular guitar teachers, Happy Traum has carefully chosen each classic song for its "playability" as well as its timeless beauty. The songs range from fingerpicking versions of old-English carols to a bluesy African American Christmas spiritual. Once mastered, these guitar pieces will become favorites season after season for years to come.

The beauty of this lesson is that you can make each tune as simple or complex as you want to. The easiest of these arrangements will provide wonderful pieces to learn for the holidays coming up, but you can also continue your studies at a more advanced level. Each song will provide important insights into different aspects of the guitar, including fingerstyle technique, harmony lines, moving basses, alternate chord shapes, use of the entire fingerboard, variations on a theme and many other insights to help make you a better guitarist, regardless of what songs you play.

Here's what you'll be playing: "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "What Child Is This?" ("Greensleeves"), "Pretty Little Baby," "Silent Night," "Twas On A Night Like This" (Italian Christmas Carol) and "Jingle Bells."

Voting Question: If anyone read "Matilda" by Roald Daul...?
Hey guys, I read the book, Matilda by Roald Daul and I want to know what the theme of Matilda is. Thanks. (Definition of theme: The theme is the central idea of a literary work and usually expresses a generalization about life. A stated theme is one that the author or the main character expresses directly in the story. In the Wizard of Oz, the stated theme would be ?There is no place like home.? An implied theme is one that isn?t directly stated in the text but is suggested by elements of the work. In Charles Dickens? a Christmas Carol theme implied theme might be, ?It is never too late to change, or material wealth never satisfies the soul.? It can usually be determined by what lesson the main character learns or teaches. State the theme and justify it with evidence for the story.) thanks (more...)

Resolved Question: Is this okay for a 7th grade english class, and can u point out all the mistakes?THANK YOU?
The novels A Christmas Carol and The Jungle Book are very alike, but contrast due to their different styles. Some of the ways they are similar: type of grammar, way written, and the purpose. While these pieces of literature can differ too, some ways being author, place, and, climax. I?m going to talk about these differences and the similarities, between The Jungle Book and A Christmas Carol. In these two stories the main characters are very different, the reason being that Scrooge is a city folk, while Mowgli is an outsider (not a regular human). Another reason is that Scrooge is a well maintained person, while Mowgli is a little weird and different. There purpose is alike, because they were both written to entertain the young reader, but A Christmas Carol is written in a play form, while The Jungle Book is written like a normal book. That makes the books a little different, but still very alike. In these two books the plots are very different, because in one there are ghosts while in the other there are talking animals in The Jungle Book. In some ways the plots are similar as well: both plots teach lessons, have an entertaining twist, and have a great story line. The plots are alike, but the scenery is very different. The Jungle Book takes place in the wilderness, but A Christmas Carol takes place in the city. They also take place in different time periods, making them a little different. Still they were basically is the same time period. Both stories are entertaining to the all types of readers (young to old). While being entertaining both stories entertain in different and similar ways. A Christmas Carol is more entertaining in the holiday time, but The Jungle Book is entertaining more during the spring and summer time. They both still are classics who have entertained many people over hundreds of years. They also differ in some languages such as in The Jungle Book Kipling uses some Hindi words, but A Christmas Carol uses strictly words of the British English language. These fantastic novels are enjoyed by millions of readers every year, making these stories widely known. These novels can alike, but can also differ. Some of those reason they differ: author, place, climax, language, and ways of entertaining. They are also similar ways being: type of grammar, plots, and the way both stories have morals. Even though there are differences, both stories are classics and enjoyed by millions of readers young or old. (more...)

Resolved Question: Did you know the Christmas Carol, "The 12 Days of Christmas" is actually a Biblical lesson for children?
I read what Snopes said on the subject, but recently, my neighbor told me this song is how her Grandmother taught her about the Bible. My being Pagan, I always just considered it, a song for the holiday. Her parents were not thrilled with Christianity, so her Grandmother taught her this little secret. I never said it was the secret which snopes has de-bunked. I just found it rather interesting as way to teach a child. My neighbor is a few years older than my mother, who is 88. So before you jump up & down... You might have waited for the rest of my info. But by all means, please check this out with snopes. I'm inclined to believe the lady next door, it was her Grandmother who taught her all about the Christian's God. (more...)
