One Tough Mother: Success in Life, Business and Apple Pies
When a heart attack claimed Bert Boyle's husband in 1970, the forty-six-year-old housewife and mother of three found herself at the helm of Columbia Sportswear, a small and financially struggling outerwear manufacturer in Portland, Oregon. With no business experience whatsoever, Boyle was faced with the challenge running Columbia, which had been founded in 1937 by her father-a Jewish immigrant who fled Hitler's Germany to come to America. Though many expected Boyle to fail, she and her son Tim persevered, and kept the business afloat through very challenging times. In 1970, Columbia Sportswear boasted forty employees and $800,000 in annual sales. Under the leadership of Gert and Tim Boyle, the company now has more than two thousand employees, annual sales approaching one billion dollars, and is the leading seller of skiwear in the United States. And thanks to a creative advertising campaign that billed her as "one tough mother," Gert Boyle has become an icon in her industry, and she is the first woman ever inducted into the International Sporting Goods Hall of Fame. In ONE TOUGH MOTHER, Boyle presents and honest, open, and often irreverent account of her truly remarkable journey from a childhood in Nazi Germany to fame and fortune in America. Boyle offers insights into succeeding in business and in life, and shares many of the advertisements and strategies that have made her so recognizable. Her story is one that will inspire anyone who dreams of turning a small business into a bigger business, as well as individuals who find themselves facing circumstances beyond their control.

Open Question: Are there any heavily pine forested cities in the West?
I've been to many east-coast cities and states, and sure many of which are lush with deciduous forests. I've never been to the West however, are there any modern cities that are built in or surrounded by northwest pine forests? Such as in NorCal, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana...etc?
I know many large cities are built in flat valleys, and most "scenic" outdoor mountain cities are often remote, tiny or touristy. I'm looking for an in-between.

Open Question: Do I have a case for wrongful termination in Oregon?
I recently moved here from California about a year ago, I live with my Wife and Son We rent an apartment in Springfield.
I'm a commercial truck driver for a large Beverage Distribution Company in Eugene. On December 31st 2008 my HR department called me on my route informing me that some of my paperwork wasnt consistent with other paperwork, that basically I listed my children as benificiaries on my 401 K, which i wasnt supposed to do if i was married. Then they looked at my W2 and noticed that i was filing single. The HR dept. asked me if i was married or not I told them I was, they then told me that i needed to go in and see them immediatly after my shift.
Immediatly after getting off the phone with them I called my wife and asked her to get online and make sure that oregon recognizes common law marriage. She told me No. When i got back to work I approached my supervisor and informed him that i think i had just lied to HR because oregon doesnt recognize common law marriage. We then all 3 went into an office where they told me that this is insurance fraud, that I owe them money that was paid covering my wife on the insurance and that I also owe the insuarance company money they paid for her emergency room visit in July 2008. The following day i researched it on the internet myself and came up with some interesting information.
On Friday Jan 2 2009 I gave my supervisor what i had found about oregon and common law marriage. Here is what i gave him ( the link is from the offical colorado state website on common law marriage where i contend she and i lived for a period of time)
Does Oregon have common law marriages?
A common law ?marriage? is not valid in Oregon. However, if a couple is from a state that acknowledges common law marriages (currently 15 states do), and the couple meets the requirements of common law marriage of that state, then the state of Oregon will acknowledge the marriage of that state as valid in Oregon.
Legal editor: Melya Stylos, May 2008.
Even if a state no longer permits common law marriages, the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the United States Constitution requires all states to recognize and validate common law marriages created in states that do permit them. This means that you and your partner can create a common law marriage in Montana and still have it recognized in New York.

Later on the morning of January 2 2009 I recieved a phone call from my supervisor telling me "Enough of the Fucking Bullshit with this Bullshit Fucking Paperwork you gave to me I dont know if i'm going to Fire you or not but i do know you're in a shit load of trouble so just do your fucking job and i'll let you know when i make a decision."
On 1-7-09 I was fired for submiting false information.

Voting Question: I need guidance. In my late 20's, non-traditional student needing to relocate and finish College.?
Skies the limit is what I have always been told! I currently live in NY state working two jobs without a degree and I'm ready for something different. I'm scared to start over but I feel the need to. I've been working towards a degree in Biology and Environmental Biology. What my heart really wants is something more focused in Wildlife Biology and Conservation. I've spent a huge amount of time looking at Colleges and Universities with these degree options and I have a good idea of my likes and dislikes for an area, but I just don't know what course of action is the best to take. Apply to a school first, then relocate? Relocate then find a school? I've been looking towards Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, Alaska. If someone can offer up some advise, suggestions, words of encouragement, ANYTHING, so I can consider what way to put my best foot forward I would appreciate it very much!!

Resolved Question: Are GPA's that important?
I have a 3.5 GPA, unweighted, and I've been told repeatedly that it is way to low for my schools I'm applying to.
Tufts University, Boston College, Willamette University, Roger Williams University, University of Oregon
However, my GPA is a result of my courseload: Lots of AP and Honors courses, and AP tests. I sacrificed a good GPA for a challenging course load, but was that the wrong thing to do?
Do GPA's matter that significantly that I ruined my chances for these schools?
If it's relevant, here are other stats of mine
1900 SAT score
Member of Model UN, Green Club, MTAD (Montana Teens Against Drugs)
Captain of Cross Country team, lettered 5 times in swimming and cross country
Volunteer at art museum teaching classes to kids
Work 2 jobs.
I'm seriously worried about this issue, as college is one of the most important choices that one can ever make.
All answers are welcomed. Thank you so much!
Happy New Year, also!

Resolved Question: What do you think of my mock 2009 NFL mock draft?
There are a couple of surprise picks in here. Also I have some players falling out of the 1st round that most people have going in the early to mid 1st. You have to remember though, NFL Drafts are always unpredictable, so you have to do the unexpected.
1.Detroit-Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
- Think, a faster Peyton Manning.
2.St. Louis-Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
- Orlando Pace's replacement.
3.Kansas City-Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
- Franchise left tackle that could achor the line for the next 12 years.
4.Cleveland-Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
- May be too early to draft a corner, but it's an obvious hole that needs to be fixed and Jenkins could very well be a Pro Bowler in the next 2-3 years.
5.Seattle-Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
- Walter Jones' replacement.
6.Cincinnati-Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
- Cincy's new superstar after Chad and TJ leave for free agency.
7.Oakland-Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
- Al Davis loves speed and Maclin brings plenty of that to the table.
8.Jacksonville-Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
- Since Mike Peterson will most likely be gone, they bring in Rey to anchor the linebacking corps. Move over Ray, there's a new Rey in the NFL.
9.Green Bay-Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
- Best available player.
10.Buffalo-Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest
- Brings size to a small front seven.
11.San Francisco-Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
- Walt Harris' replacement and possibly take #1 corner spot from underachieving Nate Clements. Also brings a brotherhood to San Fran, literally.
12.Denver-Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
- If he preforms well in the National Championship Game, then Brandon Spikes could very well be a top 15 pick.
13.Houston-Everette Brown, DE, Florida State
- Make it 3 years in a row Houston has drafted a D-lineman. Anchor the line for the next decade with Mario Williams and Amobi Okeye.
14.New Orleans-Taylor Mays, FS, USC
- Freak of nature. Faster than Champ Bailey. Covers like Asante Samuel. Hits like Ray Lewis.
15.Washington-Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
- Brings youth to an aging defensive line.
16.Detroit (from Dallas)-Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
- Sam Bradford's insurance policy.
17.Tampa Bay-Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
- Joey Galloway's replacement. Punt/kick returner. Electrifying speed. Line up opposite of Antonio Bryant or great slot receiver. Downfield threat.
18.Chicago-CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
- Think, Chris Johnson of the Titans. Two-headed monster of the NFC North (Forte=thunder & Spiller=lightning)
19.New York Jets-Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
- Helps to solidify a good linebacking corps.
20.New England-Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
- Bring much needed youth to a very old linebacking corps (besides young star, Jerod Mayo).
21.San Diego-William Moore, FS, Missouri
- Upgrades free safety position.
22.Arizona-Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State
- Franchise runningback.
23.Minnesota-Patrick Chung, SS, Oregon
- Darren Sharper needs a replacement sooner or later and Chung may just be the guy.
24.Miami-Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
- After getting burnt through the year, Miami decides to take a cover corner to stop the bleeding.
25.Atlanta-Sen'Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
- Move Jonathan Babineaux back outside. Run stuffer.
26.Baltimore-Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
- Close enough to be a home-town kid. Able to stretch the field. Could be the next Peyton/Harrison, Aikman/Irving, Montana/Rice kind of deal.
27.New York Giants-Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
- Move Kiwanuka (sp?) back to linbacker and good enough to give Osi (when he comes back) and Tuck a needed breather. Good pass rusher for passing situations.
28.Pittsburgh-Ciron Black, OL, LSU
- Ben Roethisberger can't get 2 seconds in the pocket without some defender having a hold of him. Ciron could help to solidify the inside of the line.
29.Philadelphia-Duke Robinson, OL, Oklahoma
- With John Runyan and the other guy probably being gone after the season, Duke can step in for them. And we all know how Andy drafts with his 1st pick.
30.Indianapolis-Terrance Cody, DT, Alabama
- Bring much need presence back in the middle of the D-line after Ed Johnson's release. Great run stopper. HUGE kid.
31.Philadelphia (from Carolina)-Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri
- LJ Smith just isn't getting it done.
32.Tennessee-Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
- The Titans are going to need someone in the middle after Albert Haynesworth leaves during free agency. The kid who stepped in during the Pittsburgh game was solid, but in the next 3 years he's gong to need someone next to him. Think, John Henderson and Marcus Stroud of Jacksonville few years back or Pat/Kevin Williams of the Vikings.
*Note: I do have Matthew Stafford (QB, Georgia) coming out, but with the lack of need for quarterbacks, I have him falling to the early to mid 2nd round. Also LeSean McCoy, Knowshon Moreno, and Shonn Greene would normally be a 1st round pick in most drafts, but there is a lack of need for runningbacks this year.
Just to anyone who's curious, I'm a Saints fan. With a solid draft and some good moves during free agency for defense we really have a chance to be a Super Bowl contender next year.
Geaux Saints!
Ironpump or w/e don't give me any of that bull. Remember how Brady Quinn was a definate top 5 pick, but if the Browns hadn't have traded up for him then he would've fallen to the SECOND ROUND. Yes a surefire top 5 picks falling to the 2nd round. It can happen. And did you read what I first wrote? THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SURPRISE PICKS.
Yes I truely have Cushing going ahead of Laurinitis. I've watched some of his games this year and he has be awful against top talent (Penn State, USC). And in that USC game Brian Cushing was far superior.
