Resolved Question: is burning a large amount of gold leaf terribly unhealthy?
i work part-time in a patisserie (fancy bakery) as a general assistant, and one of the jobs that i regularly do is preparing the different types of sugar syrups and then torching them to brulee them. the majority of the things im hitting with the butane torch has a large amount of 24k (inert, edible, pure gold) gold leaf, gold flake, and pure silver leaf. some of it is precise work, so my mouth is typically about a foot away from where the heat is touching the gold.
im already a smoker and i know that inhaling anything but good, clean air isnt healthy, but is this particularly unhealthy for any reason? i know it gets smelted down all of the time, but i have absolutely no idea what protective measures would be needed. lets pretend im putting a balled up bit of gold leaf in a pipe and smoking it.
gold is inorganic, and my question was specific enough that you didnt answer it
and i know its unhealthy, but i want to know if a mask is really a must. please dont answer this question for shits and giggles if you dont genuinely know what youre talking about please

Resolved Question: In a water heater, how much energy would be saved if ALL the water was touching the heating element?
What I'm really trying to figure out is, in rough/general terms, how much energy potentially could be saved if the surface area between the water and the heating element was maximized to the fullest theoretical amount. For instance, if the volume of water was flattened out over some gigantic (in surface area) heating element so that every bit of water (every molecule, I guess) was touching it, all of the water would get it's heat directly through conduction from the heating element, without relying on convection to spread the heat. I know some heat is wasted through convection because it is converted into mechanical energy. In addition, convection takes time, which means any other inefficiencies in the system will be exacerbated. And there may be other benefits to increasing surface area that I'm not aware of.
I do not need precise figures or equations (though I'd love to know them, if you feel like discussing that). I just want to know if the potential savings are anywhere near as big as I think they may be. It seems to me, compared with heating water in a tank or even a small pipe, the potential increase in surface area to volume ratio of water is almost infinite, or at least extremely large, and therefore the potential energy savings are extremely large. I know there are going to be problems with the practicality of creating/using a device with essentially all of the water on the surface, and I'm trying to figure out how much "energy" I should expend trying to figure out how to do it! Thanks.

Plz read this and tell me ways I can improve it and give your opoinion n it plz??
Quartz is one of the most abundant and widlyspread of minerals in Earth's crust. We have virtually no hope I runing out in your or my life time. It is made up of one atom of silica and 2 atoms of oxygen. It has a hardness of 7 on Mohs Hardness scale and a density of 2.65. This makes it harder then most minerals and extremely resistant to chemical and meachanical weathering, which allows it to form almost anywhere!
Quartz is part of the silicates class, and the subclass of tectosilicates. Quartz and most of the other Quartz Group members are also classified here as silicates because of their structural and property similarities to other tectosilicates But, stishovite, for example, has properties and structure more closely related to the minerals of the Rutile Group and is therefore classified as an oxide. Thus, even though quartz is scientificly classified as in the silicates group the true classification of all the quartz members is still being debated and is undecided at the moment because, of the many versions of the mineral itself. As much as we over look this mineral we don't relize how dependent we are on it.
What Are The Uses Of Quartz?
Like I said, this mineral is VERY overlooked by a lot of people. These people don't realize that almost all the electronic things around them have this mineral in them. All the electronic things we use everyday such as, cell phones, your radio, your television and even your computer have this mineral in them! This is because, quartz is piezoelectric (It can produce electricity when preasured by sound waves.) But how is Quartz placed and used in these things? Well, Thin wafers of quartz grounded to the precise thickness, can transmit sound waves at fixed frequencies, making them invaluable to the things I mentioned earlier and more! A lot of electronic things probably wouldn't function as well without this mineral.
Even most of your jewelry has this mineral in it! This is because, quartz can be used in gemstones such as, Bloodstones, Agate, Tigerseye, Citrine, Carneian, Onyx and Sardonyx.
What qualitities does quartz have to help us?
Quartz has many qualities theat help us in our everyday lives for example, because of its ability to rotate the plane of polarization of light and its transparency in ultraviolet rays it is used in heat-ray lamps, prism, and spectrographic lenses. Used in the manufacture of glass, paints, abrasives, refractories, and precision instruments.
Also Cultured quartz,? that is, quartz crystals grown very carefully in highly controlled laboratory conditions, is the quartz that is used in industry. About 200 metric tons of cultured quartz is produced each year. In the production of cultured quartz crystals, a ?seed crystal? is needed. A seed crystal is a small piece of carefully selected, non-electronics-grade quartz. The manufactured crystal grows on this seed crystal. Seed crystals of quartz are called lascas. The United States is 100% dependent on imported lascas for manufactured quartz crystals.
SO WHAT DOES QUARTZ LOOK LIKE?
The quartz color variation is amazingly variable. Quartz can be almost any color as well as colorless. Even though it has many colors it is almost always transparent. It crystallizes in triangular form and is found in a well-known pyramid-like configuation with various lusters. However, some versions of quartz look nothing like this.
Quartz is one of the most abundant and widlyspread of minerals in Earth's crust. Although, a lot of people overlook it they don't realizes how dependent we are on it and that things probably wouldn't function as well as, they do with out it.

Resolved Question: Is there a formula for working out the power of a closed loop convection current in water?
I'll be heating one side of a loop of pipe to set up a convection current, and hopefully driving a mechanism off the flow through tiny little turbines in the pipe.
Is there a way to figure out the theoretical power available if you feed in the diameter and length of the pipe, the temperature differential, etc etc.
I'm not particularly mathematically minded but I'm sure I can find someone who can give me a number if I give them the formula.
Failing something so precise, does anyone know off the top of their heads what sort of power I could reasonably expect? Like could it run a bike dynamo or something similar?
Not that that's what I'm using it for...
Cheers!

Voting Question: If a landlord gives me a 72 hour notice to 'pay or vacate' and he accepts partial payment...?
(like... say 1/2) -- [because I've been withholding rent because there hasn't been a working bathroom OR heat on one of the floors. Can he still force me to vacate?
To be more precise-- if I only pay my landlord half of what he wants-- can he still force me to vacate?
...Is it all or nothing, or is there some leeway in this matter?
If landlord/tenant law applies by state, then this would be for Oregon. Thankyou in advance to all of you who know anything about the law pertaining to this.

Resolved Question: Can I take legal action against my landlord for failing to provide heat as required by law (New York City)?
I woke up with a sore throat this morning after enduring a night of no heat in my apartment. I have checked the weather history and have verified that there was an outside temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit last night. It is 9am, 40.5 degrees, and there is still no heat. I am upset because I am now sick and, as a result, have cancelled an important job interview for this morning. I am worried that my sore throat is only a prelude to a sickness that may severely impose upon my activity for the upcoming week or weeks.
This is what I know: The New York City Housing Maintenance Code requires that between Oct. 1 and May 31, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., a landlord must provide sufficient heat to maintain apartments at a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees. Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., heat must be maintained at 68 degrees when the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees.
Given the above facts, my landlord has violated the code, and continues to do so, in both day and night time frames. As a result, I am sick, cold, and uncomfortable in my own home. What legal recourse do I have? I am not satisfied with the heat just being turned on. The landlord should be imposed with sufficient fines and/or damages for this violation to ensure that this doesn't happen again. I am not 100% certain, but I believe the entire building is integrated and heated from the same source. So if I am not receiving heat, then others in my building aren't either. I would also like to seek health and personal damages, rent abatement, and whatever else form of restitution I am entitled to. What is my case and what are my options? In your answer please be as thorough and informative as possible. Please be precise in your legal language as well. Thank you.
Additional information: Heat has been provided before, the last time being two days ago, so I am reasonably assured that the building's heating system does indeed function. The building supervisor can not be reached at the moment as he is on vacation with his phone turned off and his voice mailbox full. The building owner is the landlord, I assume. The lease is not in my name; I pay my rent to the lease holder of the apartment. The lease holder resides in the building but not in the apartment. I live in Manhattan.

Resolved Question: Is a (cheap) light storage device possible?
Can we make a device that focus sunlight, collects it, and slow it down and reflect or refract it over and over again for later use? It would need millions of times of reflection which means the slowing and refracting medium have to be very clear. And perhaps a very precise manufacturing process. But if it's possible to make then we can make a very sustainable lighting system (w/o light>electricity>light inefficiency). We can make flash light, lamps, LCD back light, "powered" by stored sunlight. Or convert it to heat to, well, heat things up.
Ok maybe I wasn't clear enough. First the collector device focus a some square meters worth of sunbeam to a tiny spot into the storage device. The storage device then slow down the beam (with material with high refractive index) then reflect it back and forth in its' body. If needed then the beam will be let out from a tiny hole. If a battery sized device can store 5 minute of 1 square meter worth of mid day sun beam maybe it can be used to supply a decent amount of light for a flashlight. Or maybe more ( or maybe not at all :P . I honestly I have no idea)
If a system like this is possible it's better because it doesn't suffer from ineffectiveness of energy conversion (from light to electricity to chemical to electricity to light again).
