A Course in Derivative Securities: Introduction to Theory and Computation (Springer Finance)
This book aims at a middle ground between the introductory books on derivative securities and those that provide advanced mathematical treatments. It is written for mathematically capable students who have not necessarily had prior exposure to probability theory, stochastic calculus, or computer programming. It provides derivations of pricing and hedging formulas (using the probabilistic change of numeraire technique) for standard options, exchange options, options on forwards and futures, quanto options, exotic options, caps, floors and swaptions, as well as VBA code implementing the formulas. It also contains an introduction to Monte Carlo, binomial models, and finite-difference methods.

Talking Prices: Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art (Princeton Studies in Cultural Sociology)
How do dealers price contemporary art in a world where objective criteria seem absent? Talking Prices is the first book to examine this question from a sociological perspective. On the basis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, including interviews with art dealers in New York and Amsterdam, Olav Velthuis shows how contemporary art galleries juggle the contradictory logics of art and economics. In doing so, they rely on a highly ritualized business repertoire. For instance, a sharp distinction between a gallery's museumlike front space and its businesslike back space safeguards the separation of art from commerce.
Velthuis shows that prices, far from being abstract numbers, convey rich meanings to trading partners that extend well beyond the works of art. A high price may indicate not only the quality of a work but also the identity of collectors who bought it before the artist's reputation was established. Such meanings are far from unequivocal. For some, a high price may be a symbol of status; for others, it is a symbol of fraud.
Whereas sociological thought has long viewed prices as reducing qualities to quantities, this pathbreaking and engagingly written book reveals the rich world behind these numerical values. Art dealers distinguish different types of prices and attach moral significance to them. Thus the price mechanism constitutes a symbolic system akin to language.

Asset Pricing under Asymmetric Information: Bubbles, Crashes, Technical Analysis, and Herding

Asset prices are driven by public news and information that is often dispersed among many market participants. These agents try to infer each other's information by analyzing price processes. In the past two decades, theoretical research in financial economics has significantly advanced our understanding of the informational aspects of price processes. This book provides a detailed and up-to-date survey of this important body of literature.
The book begins by demonstrating how to model asymmetric information and higher-order knowledge. It then contrasts competitive and strategic equilibrium concepts under asymmetric information. It also illustrates the dependence of information efficiency and allocative efficiency on the security structure and the linkage between both efficiency concepts. No-Trade theorems and market breakdowns due to asymmetric information are then explained, and the existence of bubbles under symmetric and asymmetric information is investigated.
The remainder of the survey is devoted to contrasting different market microstructure models that demonstrate how asymmetric information affects asset prices and traders' information , which provide a theoretical explanation for technical analysis and illustrate why some investors "chase the trend." The reader is then introduced to herding models and informational cascades, which can arise in a setting where agents' decision-making is sequential. The insights derived from herding models are used to provide rational explanations for stock market crashes. Models in which all traders are induced to search for the same piece of information are then presented to provide a deeper insight into Keynes' comparison of the stock market with a beauty contest. The book concludes with a brief summary of bank runs and their connection to financial crises.

Open Question: How should I go about creating a Database to hold price quoted by our vendors?
Hello all.
In my office we have a spreadsheet which we use to keep track of prices which we are quoted. This system seems to work rather well, but I'm sure it could be better. I have the following issues with our current system:
-Spreadsheets are only usable as spreadsheets. That information cannot really be put to use other than what it is currently doing.
-When we receive a quote we have to manually record (we add a comment box) what date and what time we were quoted
-Shared spreadsheets don't update immediately and two users can edit the same cell.
Therefore I think we would be better off creating a database. Unfortunately I know very little about databases and would like some advice.
#1, what type of database do I use?
#2, how would you structure the database? We have different vendors quoting us on a lot of products. As an example, we may have 4 vendors quoting us on 20 different digital cameras. The cameras may be different brands.
To have a better idea, our spreadsheet contains the following information:
Across the top row, different vendor names.
Down Column A, different model #s.
Each brand is separated into a different tab
Whenever we enter a price into that spreadsheet, we add a comment on excel with a timestamp.
I would like to have all of that info, and in addition I would like to have more fields if possible
They are:
Item condition
Delivery time
Minimum qty
Qty available
Warranty
Voltage
Thanks in advance.

Open Question: Im planning a trip to the NYC area, and am choosing between staying in Elizabeth NJ or Queens? HELP?
Im planning a trip to the NYC area, and am choosing between staying in Elizabeth NJ or Queens. WHich area gives the easiest access to Manhattan?
I keep receiving conflicting information from different sources. My boss is from NJ, and she reccommends Newark/Elizabeth. Other answers I've received reccomend Queens.
As far as costs go, I can stay at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel, and they have a shutte to and from the airport which is free, i have been told there is a train to get into Manhattan from there. I can stay at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel and have a much nicer room than i could have for the same price in queens.
I like to stay within the Marriott family of hotels, and this is why I am leaning towards choosing Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel, in Elizabeth.
Please let me know what you think...
Places I am planning on visiting are :
Yankee Stadium for a game on a Sunday
30 Rock for NBC Show and Tour
Statue of Liberty
Ground Zero
Time Square
Central Park
(and I could rent a car for some of the time I will be in the area, just thinking about what I my best options are)
PS-- I'm flying into Laguardia, so to get to and from NJ via private car is about 80 bucks.

Open Question: Trying to find a Medical Assistant school in NY/NJ?
I'm trying to find the best MA school in NY/NJ and the cost. I've researched a few of them but no one wants to give information on the phone. As someone who is unemployed I can't afford to be traveling to all these school for information. Therefore, I need to know the cost (or just to have an idea) and/if they provide financial aide. I've contacted Manhattan Institute, Everest, Anthem, Sanford-Brown etc. and all keep telling me the same thing "come in and speak with one of our representatives". One school cost over $11,000 and another is almost $5,000. Which one of the prices is best?

Open Question: Prime Minister Olmert can you please give this information some consideration? ?
Both Ayatollah Khameni and President Ahmedinejad support peace, prosperity and preservation of holy sites. Why would a common philosophy be worded as a religio-political rift? I don?t believe that either the religious leader or political leader in Iran hates the peoples of Israel, they see an uneqivalency in support that they both want to see that put right. The first statement released by Iran in reference to the decision to not send forth fighters came from President Amedinejad, wich indicates a consensus between him and the Ayatollah. The following statement is blatantly false ?Ahmadinejad has used the Gaza fighting as an opportunity to further radicalize the political situation in Iran for two reasons: to provoke tensions in order to cause a hike in oil prices and improve his chances of re-election in the presidential vote in June. But the top leader doesn't support a further radicalization of Iran?
Please tell Lisa Ali Reza and Paul Wolfowitz that they will not be able to divide Iran with this store bought rhetoric. If peace is truly desired then the powers that be would remove those two from the World Bank. None of us have forgotten their parts in this World Financial Crisis much less the World Food Crisis.

Resolved Question: What would you do if you were a college kid? Buy or rent?
My fiance and I will be moving after our wedding (March 14,2009) and I don't know what to do. We've looked through the rental guide at the chamber of commerce and went through the ones in our price range (up to $300 or $350 with some utilities), and saw some nice places. But then I started thinking, why not get a house and fix it up while we live there and sell it (we'll move after college). I've only had one semester of college, so I have 3 and a half years to live in the place we choose. I wouldn't have even thought of trying to get a house if it wasn't for how the economy is right now. Does anyone have an opinion for me? Do you need anymore information before you give me an opinion? I'm a waitress so I make about $13 an hour, 20 hours a week, and my fiance is trying to get a factory job for between $10-$15 an hour, forty hours a week and insurance. He's just going to take a class or two a semester, so I know we'll be strapped for cash. I guess we should just rent an apartment?
But has anyone ever gotten a house paid off in 3 years???
There are two adorable houses in the area for sale at $29,900, but that's like, 900 a month to pay off, right? I'm confused, I don't know anything about realty.
Expert Realtor-
Wow, that was a little judgmental and rude.
1. We're getting married in March, like I said, and we're moving in afterwards, like I said.
2. Yes I do make and claim an average of $13 an hour as a waitress, and I never said my fiance isn't working now. He is, but we're moving (like I said once again) so he has to get a new job.
3. I agree that it may not be a good idea to buy a house, I just wanted advice.
4. That's why I'm asking- I don't know anything about realty, and you didn't help much at all.
I am getting married while in school, sorry to burst your bubble, it's in 2 months, but I will take into consideration your advice not to buy a house. Thanks.
Again, my fiance has a wonderful job making minimum $450 a week, just not in the city we're needing to move to, we have a lot of money saved up, and I have paid my car off, so I guess I have some credit, although I have no idea.
Thanks. My fiance has worked in a real estate office (his mom owns one) but he failed the test to become a certified agent, lol. And I don't know if we should ask his mom or not. She's absolutely terrible with money.
