Steve Reich 1965-1995
Steve Reich 1965-1995 In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

About Helly Hansen
For more than 130 years, Helly Hansen has been at the forefront of product development and innovation. Since 1877, when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen made his first oilskin waterproof jackets, the company has pushed the boundaries of fabric technologies. Helly and his wife Maren Margrethe gathered a stock of coarse linen and linseed oil. They designed and sewed jackets, trousers, and sou'wester hats for ocean use. Then Helly Juell applied oil to the garments and dried them before an open fire. Helly Hansen's waterproofs were a great success. In that first year, 1877, they produced and sold 2,000 items, from clothes to tarpaulins. Within five years they sold 10,000 pieces.

The business was officially formed in 1877. Helly Hansen was on the map, but his enquiring mind continually sought to diversify. He knew that the principle of lightweight waterproof fabrics must have multiple applications. The key to success was testing all his products before they were offered for sale. Quality was crucial. Helly Hansen's technical specifications were high, and so were the prices. But demand for his product continued to grow.

Many years later and with numerous new fabrics and technologies available, the evolution of breathable, waterproof jackets had a profound effect on the outdoor industry. Now everyone who participated in high-activity sport could expect their clothing to work with them, not against them. It was a major catalyst. From its roots in providing sturdy, waterproof clothing for fishermen, Helly Hansen now designed technical garments, base, insulation, and protective layers.

Now, more than 130 years since Helly began his work, Helly Hansen is a global company and is represented in more than 20 countries, with more than 500 individual product lines for men, women, and children. Helly Hansen provides technical clothing for workwear and action sports for all seasons.

Resolved Question: Planting a potted/balled Christmas tree?
We got a potted colorado spruce for a christmas tree this year. It's balled-up in burlap and ready to plant. The ground here in NE ohio thawed, but will freeze soon as the warm front is gone. I'm planting it today. My question is after planting it, should I build the standard dam around the hole and saturate it with water, or will the coming freeze damage the roots if I soak it. The ground is not quite mud, but it is already very moist from the rain yesterday. (more...)

Resolved Question: i need to vent about colorado drivers!?
i moved here (denver) from western NY, by the great lakes, where we get a ton of snow every year. I understand that denver does not get as much snow as the mountains or as much as we do back in NY, but the drivers here are HORRIBLE. it is snowing this morning, a light dusting i suppose, not even an inch of snow yet, and traffic is crawling. it normally takes me less than 10 minutes to get to work and it took me about 25. I am not saying people should be flying down the highway when there are these conditions, but considering how slow people are driving probably makes it more dangerous. Not to mention, people never turn their lights on when it is snowing or raining. oh, and they do not understand the courtesy of moving out of the right lane when cars are trying to merge. i feel much better now that i put that out there haha either way, its still frustrating. Resolved Question: Excerpt from the first chapter of my first book 'First Light' How do you like it? (that's a lot of firsts haha?
Just some of it.. Not very exciting yet! How do u like it and is my writing good? Also, it's at 85K right now, just so you have a feel. ?Cameron Mae Kennedy, wake up! Breakfast is ready!? Mom screamed as I heard the rain splashing on my window pane in the dreary shadows of my room. I realized that the weather must be in sync with my mood, and of course, today would be the unexpected rainy day that the weatherman forecasted wrong again. It usually went that way in Fort Smith, Arkansas though. One day it?s unexpectedly sunny, the next unexpectedly rainy, and then the next day we?re out of school because of the damage an unexpected tornado did the night before. We tend to anticipate the snow days we never get, but the one night we all do our homework and are ready to go to school the next day - we have a storm day. Go figure. As I rolled over, I saw the letter lying next to my pillow written in the same handwriting I saw once a year. I felt my stomach drop. Mom never fails to put it in the same spot each year, and I never have the heart to tell her that it ruins my day to read it each time, knowing that even bringing up the subject would tear her apart. So I read it anyway: Happy Birthday, kiddo! I hope it?s a wonderful day for you. Big 16! You?re growing up faster than I imagined. Listen kid, I know I haven?t kept in touch lately, but I want you to know that I?ll always be here if you need me. You can always come visit me in Colorado at anytime you want. Just because your mother and I have our differences doesn?t mean I don?t love you! Call me anytime you need me, and let?s try to keep in touch, okay? Love, Daddy. And every year, it?s the same letter with the wrong number. Today is May 29, 2008 - my 17th birthday. Hearing my stomach growl, I threw on my washed-out red bathing suit, black Soffe shorts, and an old Southside High School homecoming t-shirt. Running down the stairs, I got a whiff of Mom?s famous egg, bacon, tomato, and cheese omelet, and as I began running faster with anticipation, my foot got caught on the shoes Mom has been begging me to take up. I face planted right onto the kitchen floor. ?SURPRISE!? a united scream echoed throughout at the room as the lights flipped on. It then fell silent - my friends staring down at my crumpled body on the floor, really making the most of the moment. ?Wow Cameron, you look really great this morning..? ?Shut up, Kimberly,? I muttered, desperately trying to get myself together. ?Happy birthday, honey! I figured you would want something special today, so I invited everyone over for breakfast!? ?Thanks, Mom. Really, I appreciate it,? I said sarcastically, secretly wishing that I could disappear. Heath shoved a small, golden box in my direction. ?Here, I got you this. Hope it wasn?t too much..,? he mumbled. Heath Mitchell Graham - he?s had a crush on me since Kindergarten, and not that I don?t like him as a friend, but I just don?t like him as anything more. Though Mom always wishes it were that way. I?ve only ever had one boyfriend - Cody Beyers, Kimberly Kate Combs?s current boyfriend, which probably tells a lot about why I?m not with him to this day. Kimberly is very harsh in her ways. She drinks beer, smokes, and uses obscene language I?ve never even heard before. She?s pretty much what she would call a ?badass.? Some people say that her last name was really destined to be ?Kombs,? giving her the initials KKK, but I like to give her the benefit of the doubt. I pulled out another piece of jewelry I would never wear. ?Thanks, Heath. You really didn?t have to get me anything..? Morgan bounced over to my side then, leaning over to whisper in my ear. ?I?ll give you my present at the pool, okay? I don?t really want your mom to freak out on me.? Morgan?s been my best friend since the beginning of high school. Although she?s no Kimberly, she is a little bit more experienced than I am and likes to try and push me to have more fun - I?ve always liked that about her. ?Okay, get going! You guys are going to be late for your first day back to work! Happy birthday, Cam. Have a wonderful day!? Mom squealed as she shoved us out of the house. The six of us have been working as lifeguards at the Village Harbor Pool since 10th grade. We all just kind of stuck together ever since, whether we like it or not. As usual, we all stood outside deciding who would drive, despite the downpour overhead. Besides, it was beginning to let up, and we all had our bathing suits on anyway. ?Whose turn is it to drive? Not mine and definitely not Cameron?s,? Heath said, grinning at me. ?I?LL DRIVE!!!? Kimberly screamed excitedly. ?Of course you will, Miss I-drive-a-brand-new-Range-Rover-and-like... sneered Morgan quietly, flipping her wet hair as she walked towards the car. Then, she stopped abruptly in her tracks, distracted by a car driving by. ?Dang Kim, that dudes got your car! How?s that make ya feel? And he?s freaking hot too..,? she blurted, mouth open EDIT: okay-- Morgan says "I drive a brand new Range Rover and like to flaunt it" (It cut it off.) And here's the rest! How?s that make ya feel? And he?s freaking hot too..,? she blurted, mouth open and without thinking. Glancing over at the boy in the car, my stomach dropped as it did this morning when I read the letter from my dad. For some reason, I felt like I had seen him before, and in that split second - he jerked his head intensely in our direction. I felt my body freeze, my heart drop to the floor. (more...)
