Running With Scissors

Annette Bening is the stand-out highlight in this dysfunctional "family" comedy based on the bestselling memoir by Augusten Burroughs. Although fans of the book may be slightly disappointed with the film's uneven and somewhat campy rendition of Burroughs' twisted adolescence in the 1970s, there's plenty of pleasure to be found in the work of an excellent cast led by Bening, who gives a subtle dare-to-hate-me performance as Burroughs' mother Diedre, a would-be poet who's so aloof about her teenage son Augusten (played by fresh-faced newcomer Joseph Cross, from
Flags of Our Fathers) that she allows him to be legally adopted into the eccentric family of her psychiatrist, Dr. Finch (Brian Cox). As the half-crazed Finch overmedicates Diedre into a haze of semi-conscious madness, he also turns Augusten's life upside down while his wife (Jill Clayburgh) and daughters (Gwyneth Paltrow, Evan Rachel Wood) indulge their own eccentricities and Augusten enters into an intimate relationship with one of Finch's adopted patients (played by Joseph Fiennes).
 |
As adapted and directed by Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy, Running with Scissors lacks the singular voice of Burroughs' dryly comedic first-person narrative, but even as the film struggles to find a consistent tone, it's so full of wacky behavior that you can't help laughing. It's a messy, patchwork quilt of a movie, blessed by authentically garish '70s production design and a soundtrack of familiar '70s hits. In rendering Burroughs' indelible portrait of weak, irresponsible adults and the people they victimize, Murphy and his well-chosen cast (which also includes Alec Baldwin as Diedre's ex-husband) find moments of touching pathos amidst the madness. For her part, Bening delivers an acclaimed performance that gives the film a dramatic weight it otherwise lacks. The rest is for anyone who enjoys a laugh at the freak-show expense of damaged and damaging characters. --Jeff Shannon

The Long Green Line

Coach Joe Newton has used the sport of Cross Country Running to teach simple but important lessons to high school boys for the last 50 years. "Always do your best", "be on time" and "it's nice to be great but far greater to be nice" are mantras, which have turned the Boys Cross Country team at the public York High School in Elmhurst Illinois into the most winning high school team in any sport in America. Along with mastery of their sport, Newton turns boys into men, who carry his teaching and his love for each of them throughout their lives.
The Long Green Line documents the York Duke's 2005 Cross Country season as the runners seek their record 25th state title in 50 years. In the sport of Cross Country only the top 5 athletes per team score points and only seven are included in competition. The York team has 221 athletes participating under the tutelage of Coach Newton. Though 214 boys know they will have no influence on the season's scores, they are moved to participate just to be in the presence of Coach Newton.
Such a large team is a blessing and curse. Newton is able to spread his influence further but life lessons can go unheard when they have to trickle to so many ears. In the middle of the season, two of the star athletes are expelled from school after committing over $1 million in arson damage. The York team is forced to rebuild -- to face a true test of what they have learned both physically and mentally.
The team is colorfully decorated with characters like the All-American winners the Dettman Twins, Sophomore John Fisher, a high functioning autistic with a heart of gold, out of shape former football players who reside on the lowest rung of the team and Freshman Connor Chadwick who has cerebral palsy but is able to run without leg braces for the first time in his life.
The Long Green Line is not only a team but also, a rite of passage. It is a lifeline for these young runners as they move from adolescence to manhood.

Open Question: How do you like this excerpt from me Novel. (part 1)?
I am thirteen, if that matters. I love to write, and think i am pretty good. This is a little excert from the middle of my book. If you could provide some constructive criticism, i would love that! Be as harsh as you wish, i can take it!
Secrets Shown
I sat on my window seat, letting my feet dangle outside in the cold. My mind was still trying to grasp what Tanner had said to me earlier today. I knew what he said to me was true, I knew it all along-that I was different-but not that I was supposed to rule a whole different world, that I had very little knowledge of, in less then two years. I was not ready for that kind of responsibility. Although, with Tanner by my side as king it would be a lot easier, I would only be eighteen. I would have to leave my family and friends, and all I ever knew.
A tear began to roll down my cheek. I couldn't help it. at the same moment a few flurries of snow began to fall. Another tear fell to the ground below me and a few more flurries fell to earth. The snow was beautiful. Moonlight glistened off the ice on the walk ways and the powder covered up small patches of the black road laid out before me. Watching the snow was very calming and helped me realize that crying over the current situation wasn't helping. My tears stopped and so did the snow, which made me somewhat mad. I turned my head away and turned on some music to end the eerie silence that hovered over me like morning fog. I heard a loud thump outside my window and quietly ran over to it, hoping it would be Tanner. I stuck my head outside and the winter chill stole my breath. I looked left and right, up and down Washington lane, but he was no where to found. I was disappointed, but he was very busy and I knew he already said he couldn't come to night.
Downstairs I heard my mother arguing with Annabelle about playing on the community hockey team. I laughed to my self as I remembered a conversation, much like the one they continued to drag on, when I was thirteen, only it was about dancing. Hazel is much more stubborn then I was, and would not let up.
I walked back to my bed and turned the volume up on my speakers to drowned the bickering out. The music now playing was a beautiful piano piece that reminded me of love. I looked at what was playing. The piece was called Love Me, figures. I gave up on hoping I would see Tanner one last time before I drifted off to sleep, so I sat down on the near edge of my bed, making a rumpled mess of the once straight bedspread. I laid my head back, searching for my soft, bouncy pillows. Once I had reached my destination, I rolled over to get comfortable.
Suddenly the wind picked up and my curtains blew in, making a mess of Tanners papers I had laid out on the floor. I didn't bother to turn my head to see what damage had been done, I could hear the rustling and new it was bad. The wind stopped as quickly as it has began and then I gasped. A warm hand touched my cool, tear streaked cheek. It traced the bones in my jaw, then the warm hand pushed a few curls out of my face and I could hear foot steps cross the wooden floor. I didn't bother opening my eyes, I was enjoying the moment all to well. I suddenly felt the warm breathe of my visitor on my neck and I opened my eyes at last. Staring at me was the face of an angel. He looked strong, powerful, yet gentle and comforting. He looked other worldly- which he was- and like the king he will someday be. I couldn't help but to smiled at his glistening smile and he wiped away the remains of my tears.
"What is the matter, my queen?" Every time he said that, chills ran down my spine and I got Goosebumps. I had still not warmed up to the name. Queen Rylie Richmond, it did have a nice ring to it.
"I was just, overwhelmed from today." I smiled weekly, trying to convince him that I was alright, even though I was a terrible liar. I knew he didn't by it and he sat down at the foot of my bed, watching me scoot myself up so I could properly see his face.
"Is that so? Well I think you will be an amazing queen, one of the best we have had, if my opinion even matters to your decision."
"It does, no doubt about that. And thanks for com- wait, how did you know to come?" I was used to him making random visits to my bedroom window, and staying until I fell asleep. I thought back to when he told me how he wouldn't be coming tonight, and how disappointed I was. He hopped up and went over to the window, removing the curtains and straightening out the mess of papers that had accumulated at the base of my desk. When he began walking I could see what he was wearing. It wasn't anything totally different, but it stood out. He had on some dark wash jeans and a dark green, pin striped, button up shirt. He didn't have shoes, or a jacket with him, even though it was below freezing outside. He was lucky he was the summer prince, or else his hands would be freezing the second I touched him.

Open Question: I'm a distance runner and I need new workout ideas!?
I run cross country in the fall and I'm trying to stay in shape without the help of a coach to plan different workouts for me. : ) I usually just run the same 3-4 mile route and finish off with some abs and push ups or something, but it's getting boring. I don't usually have enough motivation to run any farther than 4 miles, but I ran up to 8 during the xc season. Any ideas of ways to get back in shape?

Open Question: What do you think of my story? PRT 2?
The Reality (title of Chapter)
The next morning I woke at 9:30am to see that Kenny had already left for work. I turned off my alarm and got out of bed with one swift movement. Then I headed to the bathroom to take my morning shower. When I reached down to turn on the hot water I noticed something small and red on the inner side of my elbow. It looked like the tiny pinholes you get after a doctor draws blood. I touched it with my fingers slightly to examine it and it was very sore, it must have happened recently. I figured the cat must have done it either before or after I woke up last night from the dream and put it out of my mind.
I took a good long shower while I thought about the questions that I would ask the doctor today during mom?s appointment. Many popped into my head but the main one I wanted answered was, why did they keep coming back? The hot water ran down my back comforting my aching body. Ever since the dream starting occurring, there?s been days when I wake up rather stiff or in pain.
I turned off the water and wrapped a towel around myself. I got out of the shower; the bathroom was full of steam. I wiped off the mirror and looked at my reflection. Even though my 25th birthday is only 5 days from now, I barely look any different from when I was 19. Even my hair has hardly grown since then, maybe there?s something wrong with me.
I went into my room and picked out my clothes for today. I chose a lime green turtle neck and black pants. I looked at the clock; it was 10:45am.
?I better go get mom up,? I said to myself, and then walked out of my room and down the hall.
I knocked about three times on her door before she answered.
?Come in,? she said, I could defiantly tell that she just woke up.
?Mom, we have to go to the doctors, now,? I told her as I opened the door a crack and peaked my head in.
?Is your husband going?? She asked with a raised eyebrow.
?Mom, his name is Kenny, and no he?s not coming,? I opened the door and walked in further.
?Ok, good, ill be ready in 10 minutes,? she said pulling the covers off her body, and I helped her out of bed.
?Mother, I?m married to Kenny, we all live in the same house; can?t you be nicer?? I asked her as I helped her stand up. My mom never did like Kenny; she constantly told me that I just said yes to the first person to pop the question, just because I had a fear of getting married when I was old.
?Natalie dear, the only good thing that has come out of this marriage is Callie,? she took a puff of her inhaler, the walked to her closet to pick out an outfit, for today.
?My daughter is not the only good thing to come out of this marriage, mom and you know it,? I said as I stepped toward the door to leave.
?Ok, fine, the money isn?t a bad plus either,? Mom, said with a smirk. I ignored that last comment as I shut the door and crossed the hall to my daughter?s bedroom. She had a beautiful plaque with her name written on it above her door; Kenny made it for her last Christmas. I turned the handle quietly, as to not wake her up; if the door wakes her up she?ll be cranky for hours. The inside of her room looked as if a bomb exploded in there; a very pink, pony filled bomb. A pinch of worry hit my stomach as I stepped inside her room; the window was open again. It?s been open at least one a week since we moved into this house 2 years ago and I didn?t like it. Not only is it freezing but also anybody could get in the house through that. I waked over to the window and closed it. Upon leaving, I noticed a small red stain on it. It looked familiar but I couldn?t remember why.
?It must be paint,? I told myself. I turned and saw my beautiful two-year-old daughter fast asleep in her bed. I put my hand softly on her face, and she woke up.
?Hey baby,? I said smiling down at my gorgeous child. ?We got to get up and take Grandma somewhere, okay??
?Gandma?? She said looking up at me tired eyed and drowsy. Her beautiful green eyes could barley stay open, and her fine chestnut hair was hanging limply, almost fragile-like next to her face. She was the most angelic little girl I?ve known.

Open Question: can a permanent us resident be denied us citizenship if he or she claims false citizenship to a border patrol?
i was 19 yrs old when i crossed the texas/mexico border on a spring break vacation with my boyfriend at the time whom is my husband now and natural born citizen. i had left my green card back home in California, and wasn't sure if i would be able to cross back with out it. my husband and his family all citizens would cross the border plenty of times to go visit the doctor, have lunch or simply go enjoy the the day in Mexico and when they would cross all they where asked is "are you a us citizen" and a simple "yes" would allow them back into Texas. i was told not to sacred and just answer yes. well i did and it didn't go so well. i was detained, interrogated, and had to pay a 360.00 fine for not having my green card with me. i was also told that i could never become a us citizen in my life for lying to an officer about it, the thing is i didn't know it was against the law! other wise i would of never lied about it in my life. i did not meant to disrespect the us laws in any way i was just trying to get back home. i have never in my life been in trouble, i pay taxes, have a job, go to school and consider my self a proud American. my green card is going to expire this year so am a little afraid of what might happen in the next year.i don't know what to do. my husband says i cant be deported because am married to a natural born citizen and ive been living in the us for over 20 years as a resident. the crazy thing is that i was planning on applying for my citizenship that same year and never did because i was afraid of having to tell my parents at the time of the incident, 4 years latter i still haven't told them and my time is running out. what can do? any ideas?

Open Question: Internet Connection Cuts out?
The office I work at has 6 wireless computers and 2 wired PC's connected to a Linksys wireless 4 port router. I have WPA2 and Mac address filtering applied on the router and is set as a DHCP server to give out IP addresses. The internet connection is DSL from a local phone company. All the other computers in the office access the internet and network no problem except one of the Gateway laptops running windows XP pro, SP3. For some reason when I am surfing the internet i will receive an error in Firefox saying the connection has timed out. The wireless connection in the bottom right corner will not be crossed out but will stop blinking, indicating it is not sending or receiving packets. It will do this on and off just about ever 2 min. Any ideas on what it could be or what i could do to fix it would be much appreciated. Thanks
