Sweeney Todd in Concert
Sweeney Todd in Concert The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's 2001 concert production of Stephen Sondheim's witty shocker is musically superb and (even without scenery) theatrically effective. The performers are in costume and use a few essential props such as Todd's razor, but more than these details the quality of their singing and acting makes this production stand out. It looks like a final seal of approval at the end when Sondheim comes out, smiling, to take a bow.

Sweeney Todd evokes a special balance of horror and comedy because injustice, revenge, and cannibalism are the subjects of its grisly humor, balanced with moments of romantic idealism. George Hearn in the title role and Patti LuPone as the enterprising, utterly amoral pie seller Mrs. Lovett are both brilliant, with an excellent supporting cast. Members of the orchestra are occasionally seen behind the action, but frequent, effective close-up shots of the singers generate a dramatic atmosphere. --Joe McLellan

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Sorcerer / Revill, Kernan, Opera World
Gilbert & Sullivan - The Sorcerer / Revill, Kernan, Opera World One of Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaborations, The Sorcerer is also among their least known. In this tale of a magic potion that causes a whole village to fall in love with the wrong people, the pair's trademarks are already in evidence: an absurd plot that's resolved in an instant; deadpan operatic parodies; radiant tunes joined to sometimes cynical words. The work's popularity may have been hampered by flaws like its ending, which implausibly hurls the title character into damnation. But as a whole it's a buoyant experience, especially in this production, the only version easily available.

In a series of uneven quality (the Opera World series of G&S videos, made in the 1980s) this production is a standout. Almost without exception, the performers embody Gilbert's comic style. The title character, John Wellington Wells, is played by Clive Revill with proper Dickensian gravity, leavened by an anarchic twinkle. D'Oyly Carte veteran Donald Adams wields marvelous timing and diction as Sir Marmaduke, whose excessively good manners are no equal to Wells's potion. A weak point is Alexander Oliver, not very juvenile as the juvenile, Alexis; Oliver is a dull presence in a sparkling cast.

The production succumbs to a few television gimmicks, like having the actors speak directly into the camera. And the supernatural effects may look primitive by 21st-century standards, but that adds to the charm. From the opening number, filled with earnestly prancing villagers, you know you're in a world that follows its own giddy rules. --David Olivenbaum

Gilbert & Sullivan - Princess Ida / Gorshin, Christie, Collins, Opera World
Gilbert & Sullivan - Princess Ida / Gorshin, Christie, Collins, Opera World One of the more obscure Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, Princess Ida is a satire of higher education for women. Modern audiences may find this premise hard to stomach, but the mockery is more silly than harsh. If you can get over the predictable absurdities (hint: the man-hating heroine ends up marrying the tenor), it's lighthearted fun, with emphasis on the "light." The action is set in a more or less Arthurian kingdom, where Prince Hilarion and Princess Ida have been betrothed since infancy. Now they are to marry, but the bride-to-be has established a university for women and disdains men. The score is delicious. From an evolution lesson that depicts a man as "only a monkey shaved" to a drunken song performed by one of Hilarion's friends in maidenly drag, it's a terrific surprise for those who know only G&S's more standard works.

This version is part of the Opera World series, which produced 12 G&S operettas for British television in the 1980s. The series is of uneven quality. Here the costumes are tacky and not all the actors are equal to Gilbert's mock-solemn script, written in iambic pentameter. But as the obnoxious King Gama ("I can tell a woman's age in half a minute--and I do"), Frank Gorshin gives a full-tilt vaudeville performance. And Anne Collins, a mainstay of this series as a procession of unloved older women, is delectable as Lady Blanche, with her precise contralto and her willingness to be the Margaret Dumont of Gilbert and Sullivan. --David Olivenbaum

Open Question: Help name my business!?
I am starting my own home business. The business is in film production and I will mainly be targeting families. The idea behind the business is that I will offer my services to people who have hours upon hours of footage sitting on dv tapes and have no idea what to do with them. I would take their footage of family moments, birthday parties, holidays, etc... edit the footage into something people would actually want to watch, eg. I would get rid of footage of dad's foot when he didn't realize the camera was still on. I would add music, titles, etc... I would then make a nice menu screen and dvd packaging. They could send dvds to grandma in Florida, or whoever. Anyway, I am looking for good names for this business, any ideas? (more...)

Open Question: I'm filming a daring scene with a guy for a student film. Is this a risk in starting my acting career?
I'm filming a student film in which it is implied that we eventually go to bed inebriated. We have to do lots of full-on kissing and feeling up as we crash along the room. No actual removing of clothes is shown. I have never done a scene like this before (or on-screen kissing for that matter). Is this a good way to start my acting career or will it damage agents' and directors' image of me? Also, how can I relax as much as possible during filming this scene? How do I make it realistic ? Any tips please? I don't want to make it too distasteful. Just a glimpse of unreasonable student life. Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: Who's Jacob in the Movie New Moon?
I am here to confirm that Taylor Launter will stay play Jabcob Black in New Moon!! YAYYYYYY Here is something i found on Oceanup.com Good news about New Moon from director Chris Weitz [Via StephanieMeyer.com]: 'I'm very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he's doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer. The characters in Stephenie's books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film. From Steph: 'I'd just like to add that I was very much a part of this decision. My first priority was always what was best for New Moon, what was going to give us the best possible movie. I'm truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he's going to bring to Jacob's character this year.' (more...)

Resolved Question: Assassin with changing eye colors in Mulholland Drive?
I just rewatched MD on a bigger screen and noticed that in part 1 of the film, the blond assassin has one brown eye and one blue. In part 2 in the diner, both eyes are blue. Considering this is a DL film, it probably has no meaning. But .... does it? What up with that? (more...)
