Resolved Question: Where did all the Global Warming people go?
Editorial
Cooling the warming hysteria
By LORRIE GOLDSTEIN
This has been another disappointing year for global warming alarmists, which is why you haven't heard much about it in the media.
Global temperatures lately haven't been co-operating with Al Gore's simplistic claim in An Inconvenient Truth that the Earth's temperature rises in automatic lockstep with increasing concentrations of man-made greenhouse gases. Based on that incorrect premise, there hasn't been any warming since 1998.
This year, preliminary estimates from the three leading agencies monitoring climate change, the British Meteorological Office (the MET), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, place 2008 as the 10th, ninth and ninth warmest year on record, respectively.
"On record" means from 1850 (the MET) or 1880 (NOAA and Goddard), a flash in the pan compared to the Earth's 4.5-billion-year climate history.
Predictably, few media have noted 2008 is well down the list of "record" warmth. By contrast, in early 2007 when the MET predicted 2007 would be the warmest year ever, it garnered international headlines.
As predictably, when the forecast turned out to be wrong, few media followed up. MET ended up classifying 2007 as the seventh warmest year on record, NOAA fifth and Goddard, tied for second. Now, 2008 has come in significantly cooler in each case.
Finally, there's no such thing as an annual "global" temperature. It's a statistical average based on complex calculations, done in different ways.
To be clear, the world's leading climate change monitoring agencies agree the Earth is warming abnormally due to mankind's influence based on 10-to-20-year temperature cycles and that either all or most of the warmest years on record have occurred in the past decade. However, global temperatures are also affected by natural factors, such as ocean currents, now said to be having a cooling effect.
Someday, more media may realize you can't cherry pick information to fit the alarmist agenda, which most media subscribe to, and ignore everything else. But don't hold your breath.

If you need more info there are agency's named that can easily looked up and there numbers varified.

Resolved Question: Could anyone please critique my cover letter for Harvard?
Dear Harvard College Admissions:
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration in reviewing my application.
I am writing to inform you of my talent in web development and singing in hopes that they can be of contribution to the Harvard campus. Enclosed are my National History Day champion website titled ?Nixon?s 1972 Visit to China: Compromise across a 23-Year Ocean of Conflict? and a CD showcasing my singing.
My experience with web development extends back to seventh grade, when I sat in an advanced web development class at Washington University in St. Louis. In ninth grade, I enrolled in the class, not only receiving a solid A, but also gaining important hands-on experience with web design. From then on, I have designed many sites for local entities and school activities such as the school newspaper. I have even begun my own web firm (Cation Web Groups). This firm has designed websites for local restaurants and other facilities.
Recently, I won the National History Competition for my website on Nixon?s Visit to China out of over thousands of websites around the nation. Additionally enclosed are my process paper and bibliography for this historical project. The site?s design is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for efficient site management. DHTML is used to create interactivity on the site including the citations and the virtual tour of Nixon?s visit.
Collectively, I hope to extend this project on the Harvard campus in two major ways.
First of all, I intend to use my web design skills to further improve Harvard?s presence in the online community. I am aware that Harvard Website Development Services (WDS) produces high-quality websites for university departments and many other entities and look forward to possibly contributing to this organization. Furthermore, I hope to someday make an important contribution to the global online community, as did Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, who in fact attended Harvard University class of 2006.
Secondly, I hope to do further research into Sino-American relations at Harvard and promote Sino-American understanding. Today, the relationship between China and the United States is more important than ever. Not only are billions of dollars are annually exchanged between these two countries, but the Sino-American relationship is critical to global welfare. At Harvard, I hope promote understanding of Sino-American relations, possibly with the undergraduate group Harvard International Relations Council (IRC). I also hope to make a contribution to the Harvard Chinese Association.
In addition to my talent for web development, I have a strong talent for singing. For two years, I have been selected as one of the top six singers in St. Louis for Artists-in-Training (AIT), a vocal program through the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Last year, I won $800 for my solo baritone rendition at the AIT Spring Recital. In the community, I have organized and performed in many Chinese cultural shows such as the United States Department of Agriculture Diversity Day and the Families with Children from China annual picnic. At school, I am the bass section leader in chamber and show choir. Since freshmen year, I have received superior (I) ratings at both the District and Missouri State Solo Ensemble Festivals.
I am aware that the recently issued Arts Task Force Report makes a strong case for the arts at Harvard. Harvard also upholds a strong tradition for men?s quartets. Hence, I feel that Harvard would be a great place for my singing experience not only to grow, but also to contribute to the community.
Thank you again for your time and consideration. Happy holidays.
With strong interest,
Justin Case

Resolved Question: Passover has no relationship to Easter, right ?
With all the other religions, and practices. I'm a little mixed up.
Easter is Paganism in some peoples opinion. I agree that it's Paganism also, because bunny rabbits have nothing to do with Jesus Christ.
To rephrase Easter into correct terms, it would be called Resurrection Sunday, right ? ( I'm trying to find another way to address the title of Easter )
Passover seems different, and kind of off the subject, but I think it falls around April too, can you explain the differences ?
Passover: the deliverance of the Israelites from the worst of the plagues of Egypt, and the annual festival kept afterward in memory of the event.
Pentecost: a Christian festival celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter, commemorating the descent of the Holy Ghost upon the apostles.
Easter isn't even in the Bible.
So what's the correct translation of that day. Is it just Holy Sunday / Resurrection Sunday, the 1st Sunday in April ?

Resolved Question: Can someone look at my story?
A Lesson
People bantered. Hearts pounded. Hands trembled. The sense of pressured excitement pulsed in the air. ?Attention,? announced the speaker. Several people continued to carry on their conversation. ?Attention,? repeated the speaker. The pavilion grew silent. All eyes turned on to him. After a slight pause, he began his opening speech, ?This is the 25th annual Mathcounts competition??
Oblivious to his words, I gazed out of the tent absentmindedly. I focused on my goal: the State Countdown Round. Only the competitors who rank in the top ten in the state are allowed to participate, where the best compete on stage in an adrenaline filled round of 80 questions using a buzzer system. Having ranked seventeenth in sixth grade, I predicted I would easily nab it in seventh. In fact, I wouldn?t even have to try. I could feel myself slamming down on my buzzer at light speed, grinning at my opponents? shocked faces, demolishing all opposition. Who knows? Maybe I myself could advance to the National Competition, and then?then?
?Raise your hand if you need scratch paper and pencil.? I shifted back to reality. The first round was about to start! I lunged for my pencil and tensed, like a rabbit with a hawk flying overhead. ?Turn your papers over,? boomed the proctor, ?and you may begin.?
I hastily fumbled with the sheets and turned to the first question: ?John saw an ad for tomato soup at 24¢ per can. At the price advertised, what is the greatest number of whole cans of soup John could buy for $1.00?? Smirking, I scribbled down ?4? and moved on to number 2.
?Testing, testing,? murmured the speaker, pushing down a buzzer.
Eeeernn!
Several hours after the first three rounds, I was seated in the auditorium, watching the display screen where the questions would be shown and the speaker checking the buzzers to see if they worked. It felt as if I was in the pilot?s seat of a space ship, anticipating the moment of liftoff during the countdown.
Eeeernn! He had hit the last buzzer.
The speaker stepped onto a podium.
?We would like to announce the top ten students who will participate in the Countdown Round,? stated the speaker ?Will the following people please come up here??
My breath froze.
?Sitan Chen from River Trail Middle School.?
?Qian Deng from Hilsman Middle School.?
?Alan Dong from River Trail Middle School.?
?Gil Goldshlager from Dickerson Middle School.?
My heart stopped. The first letter of my last name was ?H.? I must the person to come next.
?Arvind Narayan from River Trail Middle School.?
The world came crashing down. There was no way this was possible. I hunched over into a fetal position, hoping that this was some kind of fluke.
?Edward Park from Dickerson Middle School.?
?Taylor Sands from Hightower Middle School.?
?Roger Song from Dickerson Middle School.?
?Jiyang Xie from Elkins Pointe Middle School.?
?Claus Zheng from Dickerson Middle School.?
Those were the ten.
Thorns of pain dug into my skin. The top ten walked up to the stage. Seeing them compete where I could have been made me feel as though one of them had slapped me on the face. I could barely turn to face my teammates sitting beside me, blankly repeating in my mind ?What about me? What have I done wrong??
After the competition was over, I approached Mr. Sandusky, who was my Mathcounts Coach, and anxiously inquired about my ranking. After shuffling through a stack of papers, he pulled out a sheet. I looked by my name. A 31st place squinted back at me. Disappointment rippled through me. The question ?What have I done wrong?? echoed back into my mind.
?Are you sure nothing happened?? asked Mr. Sandusky, looking at me curiously.
?No.? I hoarsely replied.
?How was this possible? How could I have scored fourteen places less than last year?? I thought.
Then something dawned on me; I didn?t put in effort in studying. In the weeks before the competition, I had taken the odd practice round every few days and went to one meeting a week. In sixth grade at my old school, I completed at least one entire set every two days and had eight meetings a week. Even with only one meeting a week, I could have studied on my own to make up for the lost time. I realized my failure was planted at the beginning of the school year, where I thought I was stronger than I was in seventh grade. As time passed, my seeds soon took root and became my pride. By competition time, I had reaped what I had sown: arrogance.
This defeat has shown me one major lesson: nothing that is wonderful comes without hard work. This concept has led me to success already. During the summer before eighth grade, I took the SAT, where I scored a 2100. I hope it will do the same for this year?s Mathcounts competition.

Resolved Question: Does everyone appreciate the actual size of the Economy of the United States?
Let's put this in perspective:
The $14 trillion of GDP in the U.S. is a LOT of economic output. $14 TRILLION!!!
That?s almost as much as the economies of the next four largest (Japan, Germany, China, UK) combined.
If California were a country, it would be the world?s seventh or eight-largest economy.
New York has a GDP equal to that of Russia. Texas' GDP - which is half of California's - is equal to that of Canada. Tenessee equal to that of Suadi Arabia.
http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2007/06/10/131-us-states-renamed-for-countries-with-similar-gdps/
Based on 2006 data, New York City - CITY!!! - had a GDP larger than Brazil! San Francisco had a larger GDP than IRAN!
The U.S. economy grew by almost 6% (in current dollars) in the third quarter of 2007, and by 6.6% in the second quarter (on an annualized basis). In dollar terms, that translates into $200 billion of additional economic output in the third quarter of 2007 (or $800 billion on an annual basis) and $217 billion in the second quarter ($868 billion annually).
Given the ridiculously large size of the U.S. economy ($14 trillion), what does each percent in nominal GDP growth translate to, in terms of that amount of additional U.S. economic output compared to the size of various national economies? Here is how it breaks down:
1% of current-dollar annual growth in U.S. GDP ($140 billion) would be the equivalent of adding the entire economies of either the Czech Republic ($142b) or Israel ($142b) to the U.S. economy.
2% growth would be like adding Denmark's entire economy ($276b) to the U.S.
3% growth would be like adding more than Turkey's entire economy ($401b) to the U.S.
4% growth would be almost like adding the entire Dutch economy ($660b) to the U.S.
5% growth would be almost like adding the entire economy of Australia ($755b) to the U.S.
6% growth would be like adding Mexico's economy ($840b) to the U.S.
7% growth would be like adding Russia's entire economy ($985b) to the U.S.
Keep things in perspective folks.
Dude...14 Trillion - in one year...

Resolved Question: What do you think of the 85 billion dollar AIG bailout?
The Fed is putting together a 85 billion dollar bailout for AIG. This bailout would be nothing short of socialism. But if the company is not bailed out, the world could be spun into a depression.
AIG is the world's largest insurer, with operations in over 100 countries.
It employs over 106,000 people.
It has assets worth over 1 trillion dollars, and its collapse could cause choas in the 62 trillion dollar default market, where it is a major player.
AIG insures more than one-third of the Forbes 400 richest Americans, according to its annual report.
Its aircraft leasing unit boasts a fleet of 900 jets. It ranks as the world's seventh-largest asset manager. It is even the main sponsor of British soccer club Manchester United.
"AIG at US$1 trillion in assets is substantially larger than Lehman Brothers and it does business with "virtually every financial institution in the world," money manager Michael Lewitt wrote in the New York Times on Tuesday.
"Regulators knew that if Lehman went down, the world wouldn't end. But Wall Street isn't remotely prepared for the inestimable damage the financial system would suffer if AIG collapsed," he wrote.
This should be the beginning of end for capitalism, but the American government is using socialism to prop up capitalism, just as Roosevelt did during The Great Depression.
AIG should have been allowed to go under in a free market, capitalistic society.
That's my point, Mickey. Capitalism is a bunch of BS. Borrowing at interest my foot.

Resolved Question: What do you think about this story(please comment on how to make it better)?
The Petals of Armageddon
Okay my name is Tim and my life had numerous changes that took place ever since I was a kid in the seventh grade. I used to sell paper flowers for a really high price at my school. I was your common seventh grade kid; I brushed my teeth, went to school, ate my lunch, and went to sleep. The only remarkable talent I had was that I could make paper flowers out of almost anything that was flexible. I also had and still have a silhouette of a flower with five pointed pedals on my heart, there?s no explanation other than it being a birthmark although my parents kept telling me that it wasn?t there when I was born. Sad, they say the mind is the first thing to go.
I recall that the day it all began was one day before my school?s annual talent show where I was going to make flowers out of the curtain?s although the school wasn?t going to be to happy about it. I remember that I had trouble sleeping that night because I was exceedingly nervous. Suddenly my birthmark undertook a great pain; it was like a thousand knives were being forced into the area where my birthmark was. The pain was like nothing I ever felt before; it was like my skin was being ripped from my very flesh. It gradually increased and in a matter of seconds it overtook me and forced m to let out a deafening scream.
As the pain increased the room around me started spinning and as it got faster the pain increased, I couldn?t bear the tremendous pain so I closed my eyes and clenched my fists while screaming with the tip of my voice. In the blink of an eye the pain stopped just as it had begun but I still didn?t fully heal I was drowsy and had the feeling of falling, I tried opening my eyes but everything was so blurry but that didn?t even mater all I could see was darkness. I couldn?t fully open my eyes, even so I had to find out what was going on so I pushed myself like I usually do at all situations. I finally opened my eyes but my body was completely immobilized, I could still see that I was falling in darkness and wondered if the pain that lasted for a good three minutes put me in a coma or was I dead I couldn?t tell.
A feint whisper met with my ears as I couldn?t tell what it was saying the first few times I waited and it grew louder which at this point was no surprise to me. I heard the sentence the fifth time it was restated, it said ?The Petals are your destiny, don?t run away?. After I heard and understood it the whisper changed into the thundering sound of a the screeching scream of a little girl that shattered me like a ball would shatter a window and when every piece of me hit the ground my torso launched itself forward as I opened my eyes. I was sweaty and frightened, I was breathing heavily and as I looked around I could hear my pacing heart beating
