Riding the Rails
Riding the Rails Desperate times call for desperate measures, and perhaps no time in America's history has been so desperate as the Great Depression. Hundreds of thousands of young men and women left home seeking work and money wherever they could find it, and many of them took to hopping trains as a means of cheap, speedy (though by no means safe) travel. Riding the Rails lets survivors tell their stories of thrills, humiliation, and boredom from a distance of 60 years. You'll be amazed at the strength and determination of these folks to survive the difficult times, and find their reminiscences beautiful, sometimes angry, sometimes poetic. Contemporary newsreel footage and songs from such depression-era chroniclers as Woody Guthrie and Jimmie Rodgers make the 1930s come alive and evoke the vitality and suffering of a generation. --Rob Lightner

Tiny Tilda's Pumpkin Pie (Reading Railroad Books)
Tiny Tilda's Pumpkin Pie (Reading Railroad Books) Once upon a time, Tiny Tilda lived in a small house with her three selfish sisters, Hilda, Gilda, and Wilda. Tilda did all the chores and all the work around the house . . . but great things come to patient, determined hippos, as Tilda discovers with the help of a small pumpkin seed! Hilarious illustrations highlight the laziness of the three sisters as Tilda plants, tends, harvests, and bakes, ending up with the most amazing pumpkin pie any hippo has ever seen! Resolved Question: Can you please revise my rough draft and tell me any mistakes, things I should correct, etc?
The California Gold Rush began on January 24th, 1848 when gold was discovered by James Wilson Marshall at Sutter?s Mill in Coloma, California. News of the discovery began to spread resulting in about 300,000 men, women, and children coming to California from the United States and aboard. The effects of the Gold Rush were substantial. For example-San Francisco grew from a tiny hamlet of tents to a boom town. Roads, churches, schools, and other towns were built throughout California. A system of laws and government were created leading to the admission of California as a state in 1850. New methods of transportation developed as a steamships came into regular service as railroads were built. The business of agriculture, California?s next major growth field was started on a wide scale throughout the state. However the Gold Rush had negative effects on Native American?s who were attacked and pushed off traditional langs, and the gold mining caused environmental harm. The methods of extraction were that large amounts of gravel and silt in a addition to heavy metals and other pollutants went into streams and rivers. Gold was discovered in southern California but on a much smaller scale. The first discovery of gold at Rancho, San Francisco in the mountains north of present-day Los Angeles, had been in 1842, six years before Marshall?s discovery, while California was still apart of Mexico. However the 1842 discovery attracted little notice and were of limited consequence economically. People lived in a cabin with six other minors. The cabin had a fireplace and an oven. The minors? diets were poor with the result that many suffered from disease?s particulary scurvy. They often felt seriously ill and became deranged and were not expected to live but surprisingly recovered in a week?s time. One of the people who had lived on a gold camp explained, ?Many people that came there met with bad success and thousands would probably end up leaving their bones there. Others lost their health, contracted diseases that they will carry to their graves with them. Some begged their way home and half of the people that came there will never make enough to carry them back. There was a good deal of sin and sickness that went on there like stealing, lying, swearing, drinking, gambling, and murdering. Almost every public house was a place for gambling and it appeared to be the greatest evil in the gold camps. Men made and lost thousands in a night, and sometimes small boys would go up and bet $5 or $10 and if they lost all of it, they would go back the next day and dig more.? HOW THE F#CK DID I COPY THIS FROM WIKIPEDIA, IF I WOULD HAVE COPIED IT, THERE WOULD BE #'S AND SHIT! FUCK YOU DON'T BOTHER ANSWERING, BLOCKED AND REPORTED, KISS MY @$$ (more...)

Resolved Question: Tiny holes in wood table?
I recently purchased a new wood dining table, made of reclaimed railroad wood. That was about two months ago. Now I am seeing little holes showing up in the surface of the wood, about the size of a pencil point. And I just now saw a tiny beige bug on the table. What is going on? And how do I treat this? Thank you!! (more...)

Resolved Question: Painting A Railroad Style Apartment!?
Ok, we live in Brooklyn, NY and have a three bedroom apartment. It's railroad style, which is similar to shotgun style. We have a hallway down the right side, and one bedroom in the very front with TWO windows. I must note, the bedrooms aren't tiny, they are decently sized. Then we have the hallway open to a living room. And continue down the side of the building. After the living room are two more bedrooms so they are basically four rooms in a row, with the livingroom simply lacking a door into it, which is fine, because it's open. On the left down the hall, opposite the second bedroom, is a bathroom, and at the end of the hallways, next to the back bedroom (which has TWO windows), is a (decently sized) kitchen with one smaller window. There is a nice little backporch and a yard, but that's irrelevant. The odd thing? The living room has some windows that look INTO the second bedroom (YES, weird!) and NO other windows. :( What color do you paint a windowless room? We were thinking a brighter navy blue on the hallway wall, down to the kitchen, and then a lighter but still darker, blue on the three living room walls. The back bedroom which is our bedroom, is going to be a vilet/periwinkly blue (yes, my boyfriends choice!) with a lighter foggy blue for the trim. The second bedroom, possibly a purple, but it also has no windows (except for into the livingroom). No light green or light yellow as the man is picky. The only color we can think of is blue (red/pink are not options sorry). I know, a conundrum! Anyone got any ideas? (more...)

Resolved Question: How do I anchor track down for model railroad--N-Guage-when nails won't hold?

Resolved Question: Riddles, enigmas, and puzzles (oh my!)?
Here we go, riddle lovers. First to solve 'em all gets best answer. #1. What is st in the middle, ink in the beginning, and in the end? #2. Take ten from nine and leave one. #3. Railroad crossing! Look Out For Cars! Can you spell that without any r's? #4. on the hill sets a green house. In the green house sets a white house. In the white house sits a red house. In the red house are many, many tiny black and white men. What is it? (more...)

Resolved Question: If/when they railroad us into an North American Union who has the most to lose ?
I think Canada does We are a huge land mass of nothing but oil tree's gold uranium and so on But we are a tiny nation of persons with 30 million the US has us outnumbered 10 to 1 Not good odds at all if you aske me The city of Los Angles is equal to the entire population of Canada I think that American politcans are just looking at 20% o the worlds fresh water reserves and thinking that would be nice I don't see what if anything the Americans have to lose and nothing that we the Canadians have to gain out of this I have no idea what Mexico is all about so I can't comment on it (more...)

Resolved Question: I want to redo an existing gravel driveway. Since is has been there awhile, is the existing base acceptable?
I am planning on raking out the gravel and then covering the driveway with tiny river rock. I am going to edge the side with railroad ties. I also want to add an extension off the side and that is grown in with grass. Should I till it up and dig it out or is there a better method? (more...)
