HISTORY OF PHOTOCHROM PRINTS

The photochrom process was initially developed in Switzerland and was spelled without an "e", so the correct original spelling was actually "photochrom". Once the process was introduced in America, the "e" was added to aid pronunciation. A Photochrom is a color photo lithograph, produced from a black-and-white negative. The final prints were created using different color impressions from multiple lithographic stones. The stones used by the publisher Detroit Photographic Company were imported from Bavaria and coated with a special Syrian 'asphaltum' substance that would be chemically sensitized to light, put in contact with a photographic negative, exposed to the sun for up to several hours, then "developed" in oils of turpentine. A separate stone would be made for each color to be used. A minimum of four stones and as many as fourteen stones might be used for a given image.

The Uintah Railway
The Uintah Railway The Uintah Railway was a 75 mile railroad that operated from 1904 to 1939. It ran in northwestern Colorado from Mack, Colorado to Watson, Utah. Featuring the original film footage of the new 3 foot narrow gauge articulated locomotives in 1926 on the 7.5% grades of Baxter Pass. Our video combines the historic motion picture film from the Lucian Sprague family and the Colorado Railroad Museum archives with vintage photographs from the collections of several avid Uintah Railway enthusiasts. Modelers, historians, and photographers will all want to add this video of one of Colorado's most unique narrow gauge railroads to their collections.

Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions
Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions

While it may seem that every possible topic about New York City's attractions has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the first book to focus on the hundreds of off-the-beaten-path destinations in the city. Some are small museums, others are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their claim to fame as the world's largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all can be visited via the subway system as the author directs readers to which of the city's 486 subway stations will get them closest.

These are the types of places and things that fit perfectly with New Yorkers' psyches and egos and satisfy the desire of tourists to see the unusual. For example, New York is home to the world's tallest Doric column, the world's largest armory, the world's largest cathedral, and the world's largest Reform synagogue. It also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting many of these sites is meeting the people behind them.

Organized geographically to help readers explore the culture and diversity of the city's great neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions offers venues in Lower, Middle, and Upper Manhattan; Brooklyn; the Bronx; Queens; and Staten Island. Each section features attractions and fascinating sidebars highlighting places that are particularly interesting to explore.

On the Beaten Track: Tourism, Art, and Place
On the Beaten Track: Tourism, Art, and Place Now in paperback, an "insightful" (San Francisco Bay Guardian) look at tourism and nostalgia from the bestselling author and art critic. In Lucy R. Lippard's On the Beaten Track, essays on cultural criticism, anthropology, and community activism are interwoven to examine how tourism sites are conceived and represented, and how they transform their surroundings. Called "stimulating" and "valuable" by Newsday, On the Beaten Track is now available in paperback for the first time. With her characteristic breadth of insight and critical eye, Lippard explores the act of being a tourist in one's own home, the role of advertising and photography in defining place, antique shops as populist museums, and the commodification of indigenous cultures. She discusses the political economies of leisure spaces; the tourist's fascination with tragic destinations such as the sites of massacres, nuclear weapons tests, and Holocaust memorials; and our willingness to let national parks and heritage sites define nature and history. Finally, the author that critic Andrew Ross calls "the most sure-footed tour guide you could hope for" surveys how artists are responding to the environmental, cultural, and political issues surrounding contemporary tourism.

Open Question: Can you help me narrow my list of colleges?
I will be applying as a transfer student for Fall 2009. I would like to narrow my list to include schools that fulfill ALL (or almost all) of the following criteria: 1. Good undergraduate English program 2. Creative writing track available, or several good creative writing classes offered 3. Secondary education teacher certification offered 4. Decent reputation 5. Not too small (my high school had 3000 students, so anything about as big or larger sounds appealing) 6. Many live off campus (I would like a traditional school in which most students live in dorms, though I plan to live off campus with my fiance so I would like there to be some commuters, perhaps 20-40%.) 7. Good public transportation (I don't have a car, so the availability of buses in the area is important. If they're free for students, even better!) 8. Stable weather, preferably warm (Not all the schools on my list fit this, but I would prefer a climate warmer than the one I'm used to.) 9. Decent nightlife (like I said, I plan to live off campus, so a nice town or city with restaurants, movie theaters, museums, bars, etc. is preferable. Not that I don't plan to participate in campus activities, but since my fiance will be done with school by then, I'm looking for things to do outside of the school environment.) About me: - didn't graduate from high school, but earned a GED instead, and applied to college soon after. - been in college for 2 semesters so far (started last spring) - Currently attend Binghamton University (I'm a New York state resident, but I'm looking for schools that are mostly out of state) - current cumulative GPA: 3.276, though I will try to raise it to a 3.346 with a course I am taking this winter break. My GPA was 3.676 after my first semester, but I took an extra class this previous semester and had a hard time carrying the load, so my GPA went down =/ - SAT: 1950 (Critical Reading 680, Math 600, Writing 670), but I hope to improve when I retake it this month. Finally, my list so far (in no particular order): Boston U Clemson College of Charleson Rhodes Tulane UC Berkeley UCLA UC San Diego ? other UCs? U of Iowa UMich UNC CH UNC Asheville UNC Charlotte UNCW UT Austin UVa Wake Forest Rice? St. Mary's College of Maryland? U of Arizona? UC's? Davis, Irvine, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, etc. Carleton? Grinnell? U of Georgia? University of Wisconsin--Madison? College of William and Mary? University of Wisconsin--Madison? NC State?? Elon? U of Florida? others?? I was originally looking at schools like UPenn, UChicago, Duke, Vanderbilt, etc. but since my GPA went down I figured these schools were too out of reach. What do you guys think? Would they take someone like me? What would be a compelling hook? If you're read this far, thanks so much! I look forward to giving the best answer to someone who really (and thoroughly) helps me out, and I really REALLY appreciate it!! By the way, I'm pretty liberal. Isn't GWU kind of conservative in terms of the student body? (more...)

Voting Question: All about Modern Half-Tracks?
In social studies, my homeroom class saw a video that had a half-track in it. Needless to say, they thought it was just about the coolest thing in the world, and have been asking my a million questions about them ever since. Am I correct in my assumption that half-tracks are no longer in use, either in the military or civilian domain? Where there any companies that built half-tracks after WWII? Are there modern collectors/museums that have preserved or restored WWII era half-tracks? Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks! (more...)

Resolved Question: Russian(?) tank with four sets of tracks and a boat hull?
A friend sent me a picture of a Russian (by the look of it) tank. It had a hemispherical turret typical of 50's - 60's Soviet design, four sets of tracks, two side by side on each side of the vehicle either side of the rollers and a boatlike hull. The picture was obviously taken in a museum. Not one I'd ever seen before. Any ideas anyone please? Wow! Obyekt 279 it is! Thanks Heart of Darkness, I am truly impressed! (more...)
