Resolved Question: What is the best company for sustainable snowboard outerwear?
My old jacket sucks, and Im getting a job at echo mountain as park staff, and I need a new one that is warm, and can handle some wear in the elements. Waterproofing stuff synthetic fabrics are notoriously bad for the environment, but I know there are sustainable methods out there. I am trying to only buy clothing that is sustainable for the environment, and prefer american or fair trade made products. Resolved Question: How do i get the smell of cat pee out of the inside of my boots?
I am a garbage man by trade.A couple of months ago i had to pick up rolls of discarded carpet during a very strong storm and the ditches where this carpet was located were filled with water so deep that it ran into the top of my 12 inch tall waterproof boots.When i got home i took them off and noticed that they reeked of cat urine.I set them outside to dry and air out.A week later they were dry but still smelled just as bad.I scrubbed them inside and out with dawn dishwashing detergent,a brush.and hot water and rinsed them good with the garden hose.Then i let them dry and air out for another week.They were a little better but still terrible on the inside.I found some isopryl spray at a shoe store that was supposed to remove foot odor and tried it on the inside of the boots-no good.They are very expensive and i hate to throw them away-any ideas? I know bleach gets rid of anything but will it harm my waterproof lining or my gore-tex insulation? (more...)

Resolved Question: Can I use Thompson water seal waterproofing to waterproof my basement??
I really should know the answer to this as I"m in the trades, but i do more commercial then residential, above grade applications, not below ya know. Anyways, refinishing my basement, and need to waterproof the block walls prior to frame and hang. Left in the basement was already about 20 gallons of thompson waterproofing, it says concrete, but is this good enough for my particular aplication below grade with weeping walls?? Concidering it's already here and free, sure would be nice if i could ya know, thanks gents. If this cant be used, what easily available product do you recomend, and avg. price per gallon. While i've got your attention, after i've waterproofed the block and cleaned the drain edge good, can i just put a layer of plastic over the block then frame and use standard r-11 (plastic is so that if walls weep, they dont soak the r-11), and is it really neccasary to insulate? it's not a cold basement, normally in commercial, i'd just mud the drywall right to the crete. Resolved Question: Is choosing marble flooring a bad enviormental choice?
I am remodeling and adding a bathroom and am trying to choose wisely from an enviormental standpoint. I love the look of marble floors but do not know enough about how marble is harvested/refined/mined to know if it is a bad choice. I have searched online for enviormentally friendly floor products, and marble never comes up. The products that do come up are not really good for bathrooms (waterproof or resistent) except for real linoleum. Can anyone tell me the skinny on marble and it's enviormental impact (how it is mined, fair trade, where it comes from, etc)? Is there such thing as recycled marble? Thanks Construction waste is the biggest contributer to our landfills and is one of the number one polluters to our enviorment. fair mining/shipping/industry is part of the enviormental impact I am concerned about and is part of my question. oh and for the guy who answered first---i do not shop at wal-mart for the exact reasons i am looking into my floor choices--becsaue i am responsible and sensible and want to reduce my personal damage to the earth! Resolved Question: Proper waterproof coat and rain bonnet - better option when umbrellas are banned?
At the football a couple of weeks ago, it started raining heavily and of course umbrellas are banned in most sports venues these days. The guy selling plastic ponchos with a life expectancy of about five minutes did a roaring trade, at five dollars each. But the lady sitting next to me had come prepared - she had a red nylon raincoat and she took a fold-up plastic rain bonnet out of the pocket and slipped it on. She was about 40 and quite attractive and the bonnet actually looked OK on her. She said she had picked up the coat and plastic hat for a total price of $1 at a charity shop five years ago and this was the only place she wore them, and they always kept her perfectly dry. And at least she didn't look like she belonged to the Ku Klutz Klan. Those rainhats don't look anywhere near as bad as people make out and they have to be better than some of the alternatives.
