Canyon Wilderness of the Southwest (Deluxe Edition)
Canyon Wilderness of the Southwest (Deluxe Edition) Straddling the borders of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico lies a magnificent wilderness known as the Colorado Plateau. Encompassing over 130,000 square miles, it is a high, eroded tableland of rock, canyon, and desert, and within its boundaries are the greatest concentration of National Parks, National Monuments, State Parks, Wilderness areas, BLM holdings, and Native American tribal lands in America. There are thirteen geographical areas included in the book: Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument, Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Grand Gulch, Petrified Forest National Park, Hopi Tribal Lands, Grand Canyon National Park, Navajo Tribal Lands.

Jon Ortner captures it all in this encompassing volume of full-color photographs. Packaged with a limited edition print signed by the photographer, this impressive collection features over 200 photographs accompanied by quotes from authors, travelers, and nature enthusiats who have fallen under the spell of this incredible region. Featuring the most extraordinary collection of multicolored landforms found anywhere on Earth, this remarkable assemblage of geological diversity and spectacular beauty attracts growing millions of U.S. and foreign tourists every year. These time-worn canyons, mesas, and vast wind-swept deserts form the greatest expanse of exposed rock in North America. Without cover of dense vegetation or topsoil, the jagged skeleton of the earth is revealed, providing a continuous geological record spanning over 300 million years. Nowhere else is the ancient history of the planet laid bare in such a clear and dramatic way. Mesas, buttes, towers, spires, hoodoos, arches, windows, fins, domes, bridges, and badlands, all are infused with incomparable colors, creating a surreal world of chromatic rocks, tinted soils,
and shimmering sand dunes. It is a luminous painting with hues that change with each hour of the day. These locations have long attracted photographers, but few have photographed with the unique 6x17cm Panorama Camera and modern fine-grain transparency films. The ruggedness of the land, the great distances to be traveled, and extreme weather conditions magnify the logistic difficulties of photographing in the deserts and narrow slot canyons of the Plateau. Transporting heavy photo equipment and film by backpack over long and difficult trails, presents both mental and physical challenges. And the desert is unforgiving of even the smallest errors, treating the unprepared harshly. But, for the few with passion, for those who are willing to begin their trek at the end of the road, the secret world of the high Southwest reveals its treasures.

These photographs reflect the power and stunning beauty of these incomparable monuments to time and the inexorable forces of nature. It is a portrait of a wonderland of colored stone that is the eternal soul of Mother Earth, the foundation of the planet, and a reminder of the ultimate insignificance of man and his creations.

Open Question: Im moving from Pa to Colorado, any culture shocks, laws, auto laws, etc; that i should be aware of?
In two years i am moving to the Leadville area in Colorado from Latrobe Pennsylvania. I'm moving for college purposes but plan on staying there for a long time. Is there any suggestions people have:? Maybe some culture shock i should be aware of? Laws that are different? Pet info? Auto ownership/driving/auto insurance laws? Ways to meet people? things to do? Anything is welcome concerning my move. (more...)

Resolved Question: If you got an MIP and have a lisence but wasnt driving at the time?
My friend was walking and being stupid with another friend on the side of the highway drunk and got an MIP. No one was driving, there was no car, they were just walking on the side of the road. What is the punishment for this? They live in Colorado, so I dont know if that will change anything. Also, We're thinking about moving to Florida and If his license is revoked/taken away here in Colorado, can he get a different one in Florida if my lisence revoktion time isnt up in Colorado? And how long do they usually take your lisence away for?? My friend is 17, and hes the one who got the MIP. Someone told him its taken away until your 21??? All answers are welcome, unless there false, thanks. There have been no other offences what so ever. (more...)

Resolved Question: What are good vacations spots in Colorado for family and kids?
This is the first time my family and kids will be visiting Colorado this spring or summer. What are some good places to visit, such as amusement parks, zoos, 4-wheeling and sight seeing? Also we are looking for good deals on cabins or lodges. Will stay in a hotel if necessary. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks. (more...)

Resolved Question: College Football, Conference Realignment?
In order to have 6 Conference Championship Games and more money through those CG's. Plus we won't have to hear about how the 12 team conferences have such a harder road to travel. The non-BCS teams will adjust, and at least after this shift don't have to worry about getting picked from again. I'm more interested in whether you think it's a good idea than a realistic possibility, I know it ain't gonna happen. What do you think? SEC- Stays the Same East Division Kentucky Vanderbilt Tennessee South Carolina Georgia Florida West Division Mississippi St. Ole Miss Alabama Arkansas Auburn LSU Big 12- Stays the same North Division Colorado Nebraska Kansas St. Kansas Iowa St. Missouri South Division Oklahoma St. Oklahoma Texas Tech Baylor Texas A&M Texas ACC- adds South Florida and East Carolina becasue both schools fit perfectly into the ACC geography, just look at the map, the fewer travel expenses the better. Virginia Tech and Boston College go back to the Big East. Atlantic Division Maryland Wake Forest North Carolina St. Clemson Florida St. *South Florida Coastal Division *East Carolina Virginia Duke North Carolina Georgia Tech Miami Pac-12- adds Utah and BYU, a great rivalry. The Pac 12 could possibly add Boise State and Hawaii instead. North Division Washington Washington St. Oregon Oregon St. *Utah *BYU South Division California Stanford UCLA USC Arizona Arizona St. Big 10- ignore the name. It adds it's longtime welcomed guest Notre Dame and Central Michigan. Penn State joins the Big East. North Division *Central Mich. Wisconsin *Notre Dame Mich. St. Michigan Minnesota South Division Illinois Northwestern Purdue Indiana Ohio St. Iowa Big East- Adds the NYC market with Army, the Balt-DC market with Navy and adds one of the best rivalries in College Football. By adding BC and VT it adds the Boston Market, and two rivals who already are familiar with the Big East and rikindles those rivalries. Penn State also adds and excellent team and renews the Pitt-Penn game which was once a major rivalry. North Division Syracuse *Boston College Connecticut *Army Rutgers *Penn State South Division West Virginia *Virginia Tech Louisville *Navy Cincinnati Pittsburgh Any rivals that find themselves in seperate divisions can solve this with a permenant rival like Pitt-Penn State, Army-Navy, ND-Purdue, Minn-Iowa and Mich-Ohio State. Whatta ya think? (more...)

Resolved Question: How hard is it to get into the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill?
I was just wondering if any of you current or former tar heels out there could let me know how difficult it is for an out of state student to get into UNC-Chapel Hill? I am currently 27 years old, living in Colorado, and am just getting started on my post-secondary education. I made the terrible mistake of joining the Marine Corps (at the persuasion of my abusive father) at the age of 18 and wasted five years of my life. Anyway, after I got out of the Marines, I moved out to Colorado in order to attend college. While Colorado is indeed a beautiful state, the people, IMHO, are really stuck up and it is almost impossible for a single guy to find a date and / or girlfriend unless he has lived here his entire life (at least in CO Springs anyway). I am originally from north AL as well as TN for my high school years so I really am open to being back in the South and around friendly people. I was stationed in North Carolina while I was in the military and I liked the state as a whole (just not Jacksonville) and would be interested in attending college somewhere closer to what I consider home. Also, as I should have stated earlier, ultimately my goal is to complete pharmacy school and become a registered pharmacist. Any input would be most welcome. (more...)

Resolved Question: Lawyers -- please help me with this?
I live in Colorado - so apply our state laws when answering please. My brother is almost 20 years old and has been living with his grandma after moving out of our house 2 weeks before his senior year started last year. He took the proper classes to graduate early from high school, and began school at Wyotech during the winter. Now the reason he left was a kind of personal reason, and he never got the proper help for it so he never came back. He kept in contact well, and was 2nd in his class when he was at college. After a while however, he started spending his loan money on stupid stuff and wasting it all away for his girlfriend (now fiance). In total (with his car loan) my parents helped him take out $25,000 in loans for college and the car. After the first semester, he dropped out of college and moved back to our hometown (where he is now living with his grandma) and VERBALLY agreed to begin paying back all the loans as soon as he got a job. For a few months we saw checks to pay for his student loans, his car payment, and the insurance on his car. (which should be evidence he KNEW he was in agreeance to pay, right?) anyway - just the other day he sent someone to tell my dad that he is no longer going to make any payments, and since his car (which he totaled by blowing the engine and running into a pole) is in my dads name, he is welcome to come take it whenever. The loan is in my dad's name with my brother as a co-signer, and the student loan is also in my dad's name. We know by filing bankrupcy he will have to finish paying the car loan off, but we are still about to hit $25,000 in debt -- is there ANYTHING AT ALL we can do? This is going to ruin so many big plans my parents had, and it's now starting to screw up my future as I will graduate in 5 months and want to go to college. Please help, any advice will help us. Resolved Question: Should I try to deal with it even though I hate it here?
I was living with my dad in Georgia, but then he had to go back to active duty military. My mom is totally out of the picture, so my dad had me come live my aunt in Colorado. I love my aunt and my cousins, but honestly i hate everything else out here. I use to be pretty popular, and here i have no friends, because all the kids here have grown up together since they were toddlers, and they just don't want to accept me. Also my whole life use to pretty much revolved around band. I played oboe in concert band and did color guard in marching band. Here the band is HORRID and it only has 12 people, and there is no marching band what so ever (which means no color guard) I joined the Volleyball team to get involved with something else, but i just didnt like it. Band is just my thing. I've moved around a lot (this is like my 15th school) and I've never had problems fitting in or finding something i liked. but its not like that here. I actually think i might be getting slightly depressed. I don't feel like eating and i can't sleep, I've always had straight As and now I'm struggling to pass my classes. I'm thinking of talking to my aunt and calling my dad and seeing if i can move to Florida. we have some family friends down there, and I know lots of people there, and they have a rockin' color guard. I know my dad would okay with me living there, and they've already said I'm welcome. But it would be a major pain for everyone to move me there, but I really can't stand it here. But I really don't want to hurt my aunt's feelings, because she's done so much for me, and I know it hasn't been easy for her to just take on a teenager suddenly. What should I do? my cousins are only 5 and 1 i can't really confine in them. (more...)

On Tuesday, the Virginia Pilot reported that a phony Board of Elections flier was circulating the state "advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5." Voting, of course, is on the 4th only, creating fear among neutral observers and the Obama campaign that people were simply going to miss the opportunity to go to the polls. Earlier this month, meanwhile, an anonymous flier was circulating in predominantly African-American neighborhoods in Philadelphia telling voters they could be arrested at the polls if they show up to vote with outstanding arrest warrants or unpaid parking tickets. This is also untrue. Dirty tricks and phony fliers represent the dark underside of nearly every election. And certainly, when it comes to the current contest, these tactics started long ago. Last March, as Time Magazine noted, a letter was being sent around Colorado, warning that out-of-state students could not register if their parents claimed them as dependents in another state." One of the more common falsities making its way through email chains has warned voters in some states (updated below) that they will be turned away from the polls if they wore paraphernalia demonstrating their support for one particular candidate. Since these antics are becoming more and more common we encourage readers to send in tips or episodes they have witnessed to the Huffington Post. UPDATE: Several readers have pointed out that, in fact, several states do prohibit passive electioneering (buttons, t-shirts, etc.) in polling places. In Texas, for example, the law is as follows: [A] person may not wear a badge, insignia, emblem, or other similar communicative device relating to a candidate, measure, or political party appearing on the ballot, or to the conduct of the election, in the polling place or within 100 feet of any outside door through which a voter may enter the building in which the polling place is located.
