Splendidly colored and fantastically shaped, the red rocks of the American Southwest dominate this 51-minute tape as they do the Four Corners area. Narrator Roy Conrad begins at the beginning, with the Earth's formation, and then lands viewers in modern-day Sedona, Arizona, to start the tour, aided by a series of unidentified tourists, park rangers, and apparent experts. Each area is identified by map and then visited by the camera, with considerable time spent at the enormous artificial Lake Powell, created by the building of the Glen Canyon Dam. Next stop is Utah's Canyonlands, and Zion and Bryce National Parks, the latter known for its "hoodoos"--humanlike figures of pink rock. In a remote pocket on the floor of the Grand Canyon, viewers meet a Native American tribe who operate a lodge and campground. In contrast, Colorado's Mesa Verde offers stunning remains of the cliffside apartments that supported more than 400 Anasazi people before they mysteriously vanished. Viewers get a look at some of the 15,000 petroglyphs decorating rocks within the Albuquerque city limits, and then it's back to Sedona for spiritual quests. It's a whirlwind tour that will leave armchair travelers wanting to see more. --Kimberly HeinrichsVHS Tape: Color, NTSC

No other mountains in the United States of America conjure up the myths and legends of the Wild West than do the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountains National Park contains only a small area of North America's mighty, thousand kilometre long mountain range. It is located in Colorado and rightly deserves its reputation as being one of the greatest natural paradises in the U.S.A.In late spring the vast ocean of flowers that cloaks the meadows is in stark contrast to the snow covered mountain peaks. In the deeper regions the landscape is mostly covered by dense forests that are dominated by many varieties of pine tree.
Powerful forces are always at work creating new scenes of natural splendour and in spring time after the snow has melted the creeks are transformed into mighty torrents of water.
The combination of high mountains, dense forest, crystal clear lakes, wild rivers and idyllic valleys gives this region a unique atmosphere. The Rocky Mountains National Park is beyond doubt one of the most spectacular and outstanding areas of natural beauty anywhere in the world.

A high-altitude alligator farm. A UFO watchtower. A monument to a headless chicken. While other travel guides tell you about tackling Pike's Peak, skiing the back bowls, or rafting down the Arkansas River, this quirky regional resource offers unusual travel destinations and little-known historical titbits. Imagine regaling co-workers with unique Rocky Mountain adventures, like spending an evening at a drive-in movie...in a queen-sized bed, or visiting a vapour cave clad only in a towel. Following on the distinctively hip heels of Ramble: A Field Guide to the U.S.A., seasoned travel writer Eric Peterson kicks off his state-by-state series with the Centennial State's most quirky and intriguing attractions and highlights, as well as regaling five first-person road trips. Written in a sociologist-meets-Gonzo style, Ramble Colorado alternates between regional chapters and first-person travelogues. The regional chapters dish up the likes of maps, oddball stats, required reading, viewing, and listening lists, and all sorts of atypical tourist destinations, as well as the typical guidebook fare: places to wet your whistle, fill your gullet, and catch some ZZZs. The travelogues offer more vicarious journeys through cities, towns, and beyond, delivered with Peterson's openness to new experiences and self-deprecating humor. Delve into such adventures as "Zen and Longing in the High Country," "The Napa Valley of Beer," and "Colfax Avenue Vacation." With Ramble Colorado in hand, allow the call of the wild road to deliver you to your next idiosyncratic vacation destination in Colorado.
