Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology
Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology The likes of Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, and Mark O'Connor can be heard on Heartland, a compilation featuring the best tracks from Sony's ongoing Appalachian-themed series of CDs. Individually, these folk and classical stars have little in common, but when they meet to play these new bluegrass-meets-chamber-music arrangements, the results are pure magic. It's hard to pinpoint these Americana-tinged tunes--they could fit in either Carnegie Hall or a grange hall--but they're all great; this is as much Aaron Copland's version of roots music as it is Bill Monroe's. Whether on fast-and-furious breakdowns such as "Death by Triple Fiddle" or on mellow, almost New Agey instrumentals such as "Sliding Down" (featuring Bela Fleck on the banjo), these musicians excel. Guest vocals by James Taylor and Alison Krauss break up the instrumentals, though instrumental virtuosity is the real highlight of this disc. If you like what you hear on this sampler, check out the Grammy Award-winning Appalachian Journey next. --Jason Verlinde

Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life
Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

Open Question: can someone who speaks spanish please help me translate these paragraphs?
i have to translate them using imperfect and using regular past tense. i tried to use a translator but they messed up alot of the words Hello! i had a very fun winter break. For the first half of it me and my friends went to a hotel in connecticut for a youth group we belong to. It was so much fun. The hotel had an indoor water park and was very beautifulf. We got to meet people from all over the world! I wish that i could go back! the only bad part about the trip was that they made us wake up at six o'clock. Besides for that it was an amazing trip. When i got back from conneticut i hungout with my friends alot. We went to the movies and went to alot of bonfires. New years was also very fun. We went to a small party that my friend was having. i was very sad that i missed it when the ball dropped! that night we didnt go to bed until three in the morning. overall my winter break was so much fun, i loved sleeping late everynight and not having to go to school. Im so sad that winter break is over and now i cant wait until spring break. (more...)

Open Question: Looking to buy car. Found Several options. Which would YOU choose?
Hello everyone I am looking to an old used car to do some London city commuting and the occasional trip to Cambridge and Manchester. I am amazed by how many options there are under £1000 these days... must be the credit crunch :( I found several options but because I know very little about cars, any feedback from you guys will be really appreciated. Which would you choose and why? 1. Rover 100. This lady is saying that if I pay £550 for the car, she will get a year's MOT done before she gives me the car. M reg. Lady driver. 2. This guy is willing to go down to £400 and is desperate to sell cos he needs the driveway space for his new car. His service history is only part available though. http://www.gumtree.com/london/51/32895651.html (more...)

Open Question: I'm 99% sure she likes me, I just need some input...?
Yeah, so there's this girl. I started getting th feeling she thought something of me a few months ago. We met in September at the start of the school year and it didn't take much longer for me to kinda get the feeling she liked me... even if its just a little bit. I get really good grades, the best in the class (the teacher announces it aloud a lot, which kinda pisses me off but oh well). She seems amazed at my grades and she likes to strike up conversations despite the fact that I'm a relatively quiet, keeps-to-himself kinda guy. Then a few weeks back we went on a school trip and on the busride home i sat next to my friend. Across the little isle in the middle of the bus she sat with her friend and she started saying things like "I'm so lucky, I get to sit next to *my name* every day in class." To her friend whom I just met literally just at that minute. Then me and her friend had a little conversation about Vitamin-C (long story lol) and I couldn't help but notice her looking at me while we were talking... Oh and to close it out... I think, but I'm not sure.... that she glimpses at me during class.... I don't turn to look directly at her (because I'm sort of a pussy) but I sense her staring in my direction... So, spill away... what do you think? (more...)

Open Question: My boyfriend is crazy. Help?
My boyfriend is unbelievably protective and jealous... it's kind of sick. Today for example, he didn't have work so he decided he wanted to come to work with me and nap in the car all day and go to lunch with me. I work about 20 miles from my house and then I go to school directly after. When I came out to the car, he reset my trip odometer because he wanted to make sure that I really do use all of my gas commuting to/from work and school. He is insane. I sit in traffic for almost an hour most of the time which is horrible because I only get like 15 mpg to begin with! He was completely pissed when we arrived at work and I had only gone 18.2 miles... he was like, I thought it was 20 miles away! HAH! Stupid, right?? Anyways, he is constantly trying to catch me doing something behind his back. He is so insecure and I hate it!!! Besides his overprotective/jealous tendencies that make me feel like crap, he is the most amazing guy in the world. I am so in love with him and our little boy that we are expecting in April. We tell eachother all the time that we're going to be together forever and get married someday and that we're always going to love eachother but he still acts crazy! He always thinks I'm lying to him! The truth is, I have never loved someone so much and I would never lie to him, hurt him, or do anything that would jeopardize our future together. What should I do?? How do I make him believe that I love him? Why is he always trying to catch me doing something behind his back??!!! (more...)

Open Question: Phuket, February 2009?
My boyfriend and myself are travelling to Phuket in a months time. So our trip is all paid for and all we need is the ticket; but I have no idea what I should be packing! I'd love some help with what I should be packing for our February trip in a month. We are doing 8 nights in Phuket and 2 in Bangkok. Are there any rules we should be following in certain areas; like are we not allowed to swim in the ocean in bikinis or do we have to cover up according to any religions? Is it rude to wear shorts in any areas or going out a night time are there any dress codes for boys or girls? Are there any real 'no-no's about tipping or shaking hands or cuddling/kissing in public? Taking photos in certain areas? Do Thai culture do anything regarding Valentines Day (it's my boyfriends birthday on the same day!) And where abouts do they hold the Full Moon Party, because there is going to be one at the time we are there. Or any other important tips! All information given would be amazing! Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: Volunteering Trips in Houston, TX?
Two years ago I went on a Mission Trip with my church with the middle school and high school group to Mexico to help out a family and a school in need. We did amazing things, and helped out a lot. I was wondering if any one knew of any other trips that I could take with a volunteering group to go help out others in need during Spring Break. I want to have a friend come along, but he is jewish, so he would feel out of place if he were to go on a Mission Trip with my church. Are there any volunteering areas around Houston, Texas where we could meet and go on a volunteering trip? If you know of any please tell me. Thank you very much (more...)

Open Question: can you help me edit my essay?
For me, optimism is what helps a person fight life?s storm. Being optimistic means having hope in life, and hope is the most important thing a person can have. Even if you have nothing else it is hope that sustains you. Optimism is all around you, through soldiers, when you take trips to places, through death, and throughout history. Pessimistic people concentrate on all the difficulties in their opportunities, while optimistic people focus on the opportunities in their difficulties. First, you would be amazed by how many examples of optimism you run across throughout the course of a day. Most people just don?t take the time to look around and acknowledge them. For example a single rose, could be taken in many different perspectives. Some may look at it and see the luscious petals and colors, while others look at it and see the sharp, prickly thorns. Also, after a big thunderstorm one may see little rays of sun shine bursting through the clouds telling you everything is going to be alright. Secondly, in my opinion, Soldiers are a great example of thinking positively. On television you sometimes see soldiers smiling, even through all they have been through. They are optimistic by always thinking about how they are fighting for the country that we live in. Never thinking about how they could be shot or killed any moment. That, to me is a true optimist. Lastly, the person who I feel represents the best definition of optimism, is my dad?s friend Dave lively. He first developed cancer 23 years ago, and he was told he only had only a couple years left to live. At that time, he could not get a job, had just gotten a divorce and didn?t have any health insurance. Basically, life wasn?t good for him. However, he had ended up living 23 more years after he had been diagnosed with cancer. He thought more about his friends and discovering the world, than about his disease. He traveled to tell his story all throughout the United States. It was his optimism that kept him alive for those years. After writing this I conclude that optimism can help you survive the struggle through difficult situations. Optimism makes you stronger. Optimism can help you live longer, and is displayed in various different ways. (more...)

Open Question: Problems with my narrative essay.. need ideas?
I'm having trouble writing today, and its not typical this happens because I 'm usually full of ideas. Anyways I'm writing a narrative essay on a trip I went to that I had the time of my life on this summer. I won't plagerize anyone's work, I just need examples or suggestions to get my mind running... Remember its on about a trip that changed my attitude towards like basically... Open Question: What should I do about my job? Quit or stay?
Okay so I started a waitressing job in a restaurant near the end of November after I finished my first year at university last year. I planned on staying in that job for a while since I need money to pay off my student loan. The problem is that I'm not going to attend university this year, which didn't have full days and the hours weren't usually hard to go long with. I managed to get into a Film and Television school to study acting, they only accept 18 people for the course so you can believe how excited I was. The hours of this new school are extremely intense (8:30am - 5pm minimum Mon - Fri, Sat is filming day so the hours will vary but it's 6 days a week) and I live about an hours drive away so it's going to be hard travel wise etc. But it's most definitely worth it. So now I have a problem with my work. I won't have time to go after school and if I do continue working part time there (5 nights a week is part time there because the hours aren't many) I will probably have a stress breakdown pretty quick into the first term. My works hours vary every week depending on the amount of customers and how many others are working that night (could be 3 - 7hrs), also it is a roster system so there are no set days for everyone. My mum told me I should ask to work one night a week... I thought this was ridiculous since: 1. That amount of hours will probably only pay for my petrol to get to work and back (I live 40 mins away from it) and give a little more for petrol to go to school but most likely won't make a difference anyway. 2. Since it will only be one night I would have to work all night to closing time to make enough money to pay for my petrol to get there and have money left over to help with petrol for school, but if I was tired and wanted to finish early (The manager tells us when we can go varying on if we put Early, Late or Don't Mind on the board) or something came up etc I would barely make enough money for anything. 3. They don't have set days so I won't be guaranteed a Saturday every week so the day of school after the night I work would be terrible. 4. I DON'T want to work! I want to focus on my course because I've been given such an amazing opportunity to help make my dream come true. Plus my grades at uni weren't very good. I passed everything but not at very high levels, so that was a wake up call for me to do more studying. And I think working one night would be a waste of the employer's time. But that's if they would even agree which I doubt they would. But my mum can't see this. Well she can but she thinks it's fine. I can see her point of view which is about the money. But I wouldn't make that much more anyway so all it would do would stress me out more, make me tired and I'm scared I would lose focus on school because of being tired from work. What do I do? Do you think I should stay with my job if they allow me to work one night a week? Or should I quit? How do I persuade my mum to see it more my way? Btw my course starts at the end of Jan so I don't have much time to get this sorted. I get a student allowance from the govt that I don't have to pay back because my mum doesn't earn that much money a year and my father passed away when I was young so we have no other means of financial assistance. That allowance will go on petrol and most likely only just cover the weeks worth of trips to school and back since it's so far away. I'm 18 turning 19 (just so you know). I've thought about flatting closer to the school but right now I'm not ready to move out and I wouldn't be able to pay for it because I don't want a job because I want to focus, but if I moved way closer I might be able to get a job only working a few hours a week... if I could handle it. What would you guys do in my situation? Please help! (more...)
