Resolved Question: Reports of the economy's demise - are they greatly exaggerated?
I'm here in Salzburg, Austria with my girlfriend on our annual Christmas tour of Europe, and business seems okay. Lots of tourists are here, and the shops/restaurants seem busy. The ski resort we visited had a good crowd, and when I rented our car out of Vienna, the rental agency's Maserati was already rented, and they only had two Bentleys left (one after I rented ours). Back in America, it seems like only a handful of very troubled or irresponsible states (such as Michigan) are in truly bad economic shape. The rest of the country seems to be moving along more or less as usual. I guess there are somewhat fewer soirees and catered events at my boating club, but there are still plenty. Poor people in America might have it somewhat roughter, but they've always had it rough; that's nothing unusual. So, given all this, why do people say the economy is "bad?" I'd say the economy is not as hot as it once was, but let's be real - it looks okay for normal folks like myself. (more...)

Resolved Question: Could anyone please critique my cover letter for Harvard?
Dear Harvard College Admissions: Thank you for your valuable time and consideration in reviewing my application. I am writing to inform you of my talent in web development and singing in hopes that they can be of contribution to the Harvard campus. Enclosed are my National History Day champion website titled ?Nixon?s 1972 Visit to China: Compromise across a 23-Year Ocean of Conflict? and a CD showcasing my singing. My experience with web development extends back to seventh grade, when I sat in an advanced web development class at Washington University in St. Louis. In ninth grade, I enrolled in the class, not only receiving a solid A, but also gaining important hands-on experience with web design. From then on, I have designed many sites for local entities and school activities such as the school newspaper. I have even begun my own web firm (Cation Web Groups). This firm has designed websites for local restaurants and other facilities. Recently, I won the National History Competition for my website on Nixon?s Visit to China out of over thousands of websites around the nation. Additionally enclosed are my process paper and bibliography for this historical project. The site?s design is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for efficient site management. DHTML is used to create interactivity on the site including the citations and the virtual tour of Nixon?s visit. Collectively, I hope to extend this project on the Harvard campus in two major ways. First of all, I intend to use my web design skills to further improve Harvard?s presence in the online community. I am aware that Harvard Website Development Services (WDS) produces high-quality websites for university departments and many other entities and look forward to possibly contributing to this organization. Furthermore, I hope to someday make an important contribution to the global online community, as did Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, who in fact attended Harvard University class of 2006. Secondly, I hope to do further research into Sino-American relations at Harvard and promote Sino-American understanding. Today, the relationship between China and the United States is more important than ever. Not only are billions of dollars are annually exchanged between these two countries, but the Sino-American relationship is critical to global welfare. At Harvard, I hope promote understanding of Sino-American relations, possibly with the undergraduate group Harvard International Relations Council (IRC). I also hope to make a contribution to the Harvard Chinese Association. In addition to my talent for web development, I have a strong talent for singing. For two years, I have been selected as one of the top six singers in St. Louis for Artists-in-Training (AIT), a vocal program through the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Last year, I won $800 for my solo baritone rendition at the AIT Spring Recital. In the community, I have organized and performed in many Chinese cultural shows such as the United States Department of Agriculture Diversity Day and the Families with Children from China annual picnic. At school, I am the bass section leader in chamber and show choir. Since freshmen year, I have received superior (I) ratings at both the District and Missouri State Solo Ensemble Festivals. I am aware that the recently issued Arts Task Force Report makes a strong case for the arts at Harvard. Harvard also upholds a strong tradition for men?s quartets. Hence, I feel that Harvard would be a great place for my singing experience not only to grow, but also to contribute to the community. Thank you again for your time and consideration. Happy holidays. With strong interest, Justin Case ------------------ Indeed, it is really long, but if you have time, it would really help me a lot. Thanks. (more...)

Resolved Question: Are My Parents Over-Protective?
There is an annual Christmas lights bus tour, where vintage buses are taken out of service and one is decorated. We than drive around the city, and stop at nicely decorated houses. I know that to many of you it doesn't sound the slightest bit interesting, but it is for me and all my friends. Anyways, it's from 6 pm until about ten to midnight, so my parents said that I can only go for a few hours, but must be home by ten pm, I'm fourteen, and for the most part mature. My parents always give me money to take a cab back home after dark. It would be about five to eight km away by the end of the tour,... so are my parents over protective? Please explain your answer. Thx. (more...)

Resolved Question: What's your view on the disappearance the Murray O'Hair Family and why? ?
In late August, 1995, after returning from their annual vacation, Madalyn O'Hair, her daughter Robin & son Jon Garth Murray abruptly left the offices of American Atheists in Austin, TX and went to San Antonio. As they had done in the past, the O'Hairs stayed in touch with a number of American Atheists officials, sending post cards or phoning. Their 1995 vacation took them to VA, where they personally met a number of members as they toured the area. They then returned to Austin and resumed work, then suddenly the entire family disappeared. On September 5, a man posing as Jon Garth Murray sold his Mercedes automobile for cash after placing an ad in the local paper. And the family's bank account was totally depleted of over 600,000 dollars in cash money raise for the organization they ran. My only reasons for asking is to get various feedback, there is no other motive (more...)

Resolved Question: Minneapolis in December - What's to do?
Coming over for our annual shopping splurge from Scotland on the 4th December. Having an extra day we (my sister and I aged 34 and 31 respectively!!) thought we'd try something other than trailing round various malls and outlets for a day! So I fancy heading down to the waterfront for a meal and a few drinks or maybe doing a tour or something..any suggestions? (more...)

Resolved Question: Edit my English work please!?
Well, my task was to take something from a magazine and put it into a newspaper article, so heres what I came up with. It's supposed to be the top 5 games at E3. Please read it over and give me any comments or suggestions on it. This year the E3 conference took place during July 15-17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Exposition. It is an annual video game tradeshow for computer and video games. Many new upcoming games are announced here for the main gaming platforms. Since 2007 it has not been open to the general public, so we have the top 10 games of E3 to share with you today, and you can visit the official E3 website for more coverage. 5. Guitar Hero: World Tour took 5th place at E3. It will be released for the PC as well as the 3 current generation gaming consoles. This new game follows Rock Band with a full band experience. The creators added many new features compared to the previous game which was already a very good game. With this game, you can create your own songs and even share them with others online. The Guitar design has become even better along with a new drum kit. A nice new feature of this game is it?s online band battles. Although Rock Band 2 is similar, Guitar Hero: World Tour outperformed it with many more features. 4. The fourth place game at E3 is Resident Evil 5. This game will be released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 only. It?s the fifth game in capcom?s survival horror series. This game features online co-op mode for those looking to play story mode with friends along with many improvements to the graphics system and game play. This game will be an amazing improvement for all of the Resident Evil fans 3. Fallout 3 took 3rd place at E3. It will be released for the PC, Playstation 3, and the Xbox 360. This game has been completely changed from the first two in the series making it a much better role playing game. The game engine for Fallout 3 has been greatly improved making the game play and graphics much better than the previous games. 2. The 2nd best game at E3 is Gears of Wars 2. It will be an Xbox 360 exclusive game, but it could be released for the PC later on after it comes out for the 360. This is the sequel to the best selling game for the Xbox 360 and it continues where the first game left off. Gears of War 2 has a whole new weapon set, new enemies, new vehicles, and many new game options. This is a highly anticipated game for the Xbox 360, just like the previous game. 1. The best game at E3 is Left 4 dead. It will be released for the Xbox 360 and PC only. It is a zombie survival horror with the best co-op features in any first-person shooter game. The game play for this game is more advanced than most other games. It is not yet a well known game, but it really does deserve the title of the best game at E3. (more...)

Resolved Question: Would you vote for a candidate who says so many stupidities?
Obviously, his tongue is not connected to his brain. Must be his advanced age. I think you know who I am talkin about. 10. "We have a lot of work to do. It's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border." --referring to a border that does not exist, ABC News interview, July 21, 2008 8. "I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. Voting Question: Is This Why Sarah Palin want do Interviews ? ?
Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home Taxpayers Also Funded Family's Travel Sarah Palin and John McCain campaign at the John Knox Village retirement community in Lee's Summit, Mo. (By Dave Kaup -- Getty Images) By James V. Grimaldi and Karl VickWashington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, September 9, 2008; Page A01 ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business. The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife. Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post. The governor's daughters and husband charged the state $43,490 to travel and many of the trips were to and from their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show. Gubernatorial spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Monday that Palin's expenses are not unusual and that, under state policy, the first family could have claimed per diem expenses for each child taken on official business but has not done so. Before she became the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee, Palin was little known outside Alaska. Now, with the campaign emphasizing her executive experience, her record as mayor of Wasilla, as a state oil-and-gas commissioner and as governor is receiving intense scrutiny. During her speech at the Republican National Convention last week, Palin cast herself as crusader for fiscal rectitude as Alaska's governor. She noted that she sold a state-owned plane used by the former governor. "While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor's office that I didn't believe our citizens should have to pay for," she said to loud applause. Speaking from Palin's Anchorage office, Leighow said that Palin dealt with the plane and also trimmed other expenses, including foregoing a chef in the governor's mansion because she preferred to cook for her family. The first family's travel is an expected part of the job, she said. "As a matter of protocol, the governor and the first family are expected to attend community events across the state," she said. "It's absolutely reasonable that the first family participates in community events." The state finance director, Kim Garnero, said Alaska law exempts the governor's office from elaborate travel regulations. Said Leighow: "The governor is entitled to a per diem, and she claims it." The popular governor collected the per diem allowance from April 22, four days after the birth of her fifth child, until June 3, when she flew to Juneau for two days. Palin moved her family to the capital during the legislative session last year, but prefers to stay in Wasilla and drive 45 miles to Anchorage to a state office building where she conducts most of her business, aides have said. Palin rarely sought reimbursement for meals while staying in Anchorage or Wasilla, the reports show. She wrote some form of "Lodging -- own residence" or "Lodging -- Wasilla residence" more than 30 times at the same time she took a per diem, according to the reports. In two dozen undated amendments to the reports, the governor deleted the reference to staying in her home but still charged the per diem. Palin charged the state a per diem for working on Nov. 22, 2007 -- Thanksgiving Day. The reason given, according to the expense report, was the Great Alaska Shootout, an annual NCAA college basketball tournament held in Anchorage. In separate filings, the state was billed about $25,000 for Palin's daughters' expenses and $19,000 for her husband, Todd Palin. Flights topped the list for the most expensive items, and the daughter whose bill was the highest was Piper, 7, whose flights cost nearly $11,000, while Willow, 14, claimed about $6,000 and Bristol, 17, accounted for about $3,400. One event was in New York City in October 2007, when Bristol accompanied the governor to Newsweek's third annual Women and Leadership Conference, toured the New York Stock Exchange, and met local officials and business executives. The state paid for three nights in a $707-a-day hotel room. Garnero said the governor's office has the authority to approve hotel stays above $300. Asked Monday about the official policy on charging for children's travel expenses, Garnero said: "We cover the expenses of anyone who's conducting state business. I can't imagine kids could be doing that." But Leighow said many of the hundreds of invitations Palin receives include requests for her to bring her family, placing the defini (more...)
