Evelyn Prentice
Evelyn Prentice The Thin Man was just the beginning. Myrna Loy and William Powell were one of Hollywood's best-matched screen teams, with the chemistry fairly bubbling in their scenes together, as this Warner treasure trove boxed set shows. Audiences in the '30s and '40s delighted in the fact that Loy's urbane sophisticate characters could match Powell's quip for quip, martini for martini.

Manhattan Melodrama (1934) showcases Powell and Clark Gable as longtime friends on opposite sides of the law, and is the first pairing of Loy and Powell (and the first of four films they would make in 1934 alone. The film is briskly directed and the crackling screenplay won an Oscar the next year. Evelyn Prentice (1934) is the troubled wife (Loy) of a preoccupied attorney (Powell) who appears oblivious. The story isn't one of the strongest in the collection, but the cast sparkles nonetheless. A witchy Rosalind Russell makes her memorable film debut as a femme fatale.

Double Wedding (1937) lets Loy and Powell flex their comedic chops. The plot is full of switchbacks and misunderstandings, but the key point is that their pal Waldo (John Beal) is that dreaded '30s male screen archetype, the milquetoast. Much of the film's fun is watching Powell's character coach poor Waldo to grow a backbone: "Women don't like noble, self-sacrificing men. Women are not civilized like we are. They like bloodshed!"

I Love You Again (1940) is one of the top screwball comedies of all time. George (Powell) is bonked on the head and realizes he's had amnesia for the past several years, has been terribly boring and has been, yes, a milquetoast--who's about to be divorced by his fed-up wife, Kay (Loy). The crazy plot is lofted by the brilliant screenplay and the delivery of the two leads, who spar like expert fencers: George: "You be careful, madam, or you'll turn my pretty head with your flattery!" Kay: "I often wished I could turn your head--on a spit, over a slow fire." Divine! Love Crazy (1941) is another classic farce, featuring Powell in drag, Powell faking insanity, Powell conniving to win back Loy's love--all in a witty, urbane way, of course.

The set is also chockfull of great extras, with each feature paired with a classic comedy or musical short, plus cartoon or audio radio interviews. The icing on the cake: The fabulous packaging, including an image from the original movie posters on the discs themselves. Film lovers won't want to miss this splendid collection. --A.T. Hurley

Open Question: 32 and never dated, is it to late?
Hi everyone. I've been really really depressed lately. I'm 32 now and I have this problem called never having a girlfriend and still being a virgin and loosing every friend I ever thought I had as a result of it. I feel so jelous and pissed off every time I go out and see young couples smooching and holding hands! Or yet some high school punk in his beat up honda with a coffee can muffler cruising around with some hot girl! I just want to yank his *** up and beat the **** out of him and say what makes you better then me! I know that's the wrong additude to have but 20 years of being told that your not good looking enough to be boyfriend material has broken my give a damm!!!! From middle school thru high school to co workers, to friends, friends of friends, to blind dates to online dating so on and so forth for over the past 15 years I always got the same rejection over my looks. I've always thrived to be a good person and treat others as I would like to be treated. I've always offered my complete and total friendship to anyone that needs or wants it, and it has all back fired on me. I can't get thru a day without wondering how my life would be today if I had meet someone 10 or 15 years ago. And I can't lay to rest thoughts of the good times and sweet memories I should have of my youth with someone special that isn't there but only the memories of how I was always told I wasn't cute, good looking, or attractive enough! But every pretty boy Tom Dick and Harry treated them like **** and they loved them just because they was pretty boys!!!! It's hard for me to even look at the guy in the mirror every morning knowing that I've never even been accepted to go on one single date, never been kissed, never had a warm hug and hearing words like I love you. NOTHING! The differance from me and people that wants to kill themselves is that most people have to try to think of ligit reasons to do it. I have to try and think of one reason not to. People I used to consider friends have nothing to do with me anymore because of this and how I don't get ***** everyday like they do. I've been called every name in the book and a new book started. Gay, queer, even pedofile because I've always had a warm spot for kids and used to dream of the day I became a father and the fact that I've never had a women in my life people judged me totaly wrong. Two summers ago I was living in Nashville Tn where I was training to be a railroad engineer. At the same time I was working on one of my car restorations of a 1987 Trans Am. I had just got the paint and graphic work done and was going to drive it back to my home town of Kingsport to let everyone see it. I called up Brian and Mike that was old high school friends and told them I was comming in. They made plans to meet me at circuit city. They made big jokes of my black and gold TA with the big eagle on the hood and ask who are you suposed to be Burt Reynolds? I just laughed about that but I didn't know they had set me up to get me in the store and away from my car so they could have there way with it. They knew how much time, work, and money I had in this thing and what it ment to me and the paint job wasn't a week old. They took red spray paint and painted the words *** boy, queer, and painted a big dick over the bird on the hood. They recorded the whole time on cam making slurs about me and what a looser I am being a virgin and never had a GF! When I came out and seen my car I feel to my knees and threw up right there in the parking lot, I was so weak at the knees I could not stand! I've since lost all faith in people and the future. I feel I'm already dead it's just my body still walks around empty with no sole. Just to answer some questions, I'm not fat I still weigh 147 as I did when I graduated high school. I've always been active and come from a slinder family. I'm 5 foot 10 blue eyes and light brownish hair kinda like Tom Cruise's style. As for ways I've tryed to be the cool cat thru the years, I studied music, voice and guitar thru my early teens and was lead guitarist in a rock band in high school. Took 4 years auto machanics and got into restoring classic muscle cars all thru my 20s as I still some what do. I built a 1972 plymouth duster that I used to drag race and won placks and trophies with before it was stolen in spring 2004 and found striped out 3 months latter in Virgina. Total loss there. I've since went back to college and am now an engineer for CSX railroad. Would you say my window of opportunity has long since shut at this point of my life???? And could someone please tell me where I went wrong and what I have done to deserve this???? Just if you wanna see some pics. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=170902874&albumId=407995 There is more pics in my photobucket just look for T_TopBandit, you can also IM me on yahoo messanger at T_TopBandit. Open Question: Do you completely trust the endless so called scientific studies that are being made?
I remember some 20 years ago when "studies" revealed that coffee was very toxic and the point was even made that if it were invented today it would not pass the Federal food laws! They said there was no safe dose of the black elixir. They said it oughta be banned. Fast forward to today where there is no shortage of praise for the bitter bean. Just today I was reading about the virtues and health benefits of coffee. Do you trust these studies? Has modern science, as relayed to the masses lost some of its integrity? Has real science lost the lime-light to pop-science? (more...)

Open Question: Where can I find checkered table cloths the same ones Hamas wear?
My grandma is into checkered fabric and her birthday is coming up in the near future. I've seen Hamas people wearing them on T.V. and I think a checkered table cloth for her coffee table will be a great gift. I'm looking for an online vendor that sells this so it can directly ship to her address. She will be delighted. Any suggestions to online stores that sells this? They're black and white checkers just like the ones Hamas wear on T.V. if you do not know what I'm talking about. Thanks! (more...)

Open Question: Ladies! What do you think of the Polo Double Black Cologne?

Open Question: please read this paragraph of my novel and give comments. it's quite long so be prepared!!?
(indent doesn't work so i put the first word of each new paragraph in capitals) HE was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen, and he was a man. I am wont to describe things that fascinate me so thoroughly that each small part of him is a paragraph, but I think that would exhaust him, and ruin him thus. He is something to be known and experienced, played with and passed on, but never written about, unless you are prepared to invent a thousand new words. But I will describe as briefly as my language allows his more prominent features. THE skin. The skin he inherited from his Spanish father is neither dark like you would expect, nor pale. It can be both at the same time. Verily, it is pale enough to look like porcelain, but not white like a sick man or a man who hides from the Sun. It has warmth radiating from behind, and a color that is touched by sunlight but not burnt by it. You could predict his Latino roots from the color of his hair and eyes- the former, as dark and thick as ground coffee, semi-long in style, and falling about his forehead in irregular twists and flicks, and the latter- well! They too are brown, but not only that. They are so dark that sometimes they are black, and when you stare into them for a length of time to try and work out the pupils, you can see the stars. Of course I try to convince myself that this is just biology, a pigment of the eye that is determined through genes. A spattering of silver (though probably grey) so faint and ?normal? that I must be mad to worship them so. But I am not the first to find myself transfixed. AND to talk of such eyes without mentioning the lashes that frame them is quite impossible. For they are long, almost too long for a man to know how to use or appreciate them, but unlike a woman?s, which curl scrupulously upwards and are delicate, they just stick outwards, thick like a fawn?s and accidental. And when he blinks, even for a second, the pain of having his eyes stripped from your sight is dulled by the beauty of seeing their lashes fan across the tops of his cheeks, childlike and innocent. FURTHER, he has a straight, Patrician nose, much like his father?s, and subtle (not extravagant) cheekbones than deliver a natural and kissable pucker. The mere drawing together of lips on somebody else is just a mouth as closed, but on him, for his lips are full and almost feminine, it is like when the Sun meets the horizon over water, and for a moment the scene is so perfect that you never want the Sun to move, and spoil the symmetry there reflected. HE is effortlessly slim. I undress him visually, and pore over every detail of his body through the eyes of a memory, caressing the band of softness across his stomach as if kneading bread. He has a narrow waist and hips, broader at the shoulders, and is nowhere too muscular. His body is natural, without pomp and circumstance, though I can distinctly remember the contours of muscle that grace his arms and chest like a slowly undulating landscape. It is beautiful. It is how I imagine the men of olden-times to look like, before gyms and steroids were invented, and their only means of exercise was to work the farm, cutting crops by hand, or even older times, when they would ride a horse and wield a sword in battle. WELL, that is him. In brief, anyway. I can even smell him sometimes, but it is vague. This paragraph is the opening, but i am thinking of moving it else where in the novel. I haven't finished yet- the rest of the story isn't so descriptive. I write from the perspectives of different characters- this extract is written by the lovesick girl. other parts of the novel have action in (there are drugs in some parts, a castle, love, comedy etc). basically, comment on my style of writing and dont just say 'it doesn't sound like something i'd read' (if you are a bloke, for example) because you dont know the rest of the story. Be honest but fair. I am seventeen and no literary expert. (more...)

Open Question: Polo Black, or Double Black Cologne?? What smells better Ladies?! ?
i own the Polo black after shave and i think it smells really great. different smelling and kind of reminds me of lemons and saw dust haha. i bought the Double Black cologne just because i thought it had a more masculine smell to it. plus the spiced mango, coffee bean, and rich warm wood notes kind of gives it a chocolate type scent. and what woman can resist chocolate yes?! haha Ladies, I just want your honest opinion on which fragrance drives you crazier! Open Question: Interracial love....is their a difference?
I have been involved in a interracial relationship for going on 6 months now. I have dated outside of my race before but this is the first serious relationship that I have had outside of my race. We have very different personalities and sometimes that is what makes our relationship so interesting. He is different and unlike any man I have ever dated. I was attracted to him because of his in your face attitude, his drive, and his fun loving persona. He's Italian and from New Jersey. I'm Black and from Texas. We recently just moved in together. It was great at first but now I am feeling kind of smothered. He gives me undivided attention and loving , which is good but can be annoying at times. I know he loves me and I love him. He waits on me hand and foot. He brings me breakfast and coffee in bed every morning. He cooks for me and he makes my lunch. He's always there when I need him and I appreciate that. I know it seems as though I should be happy that I found such a good person but I just think that because he tries to do everything for me that I am becoming too dependent on him. I'm 31 and he is 40. Is this type of treatment normal? (more...)
