Survival Under Atomic Attack Film: Duck and Cover (1951) [DVD] - Civil Defense Film with Bert The Turtle
Survival Under Atomic Attack Film: Duck and Cover (1951) [DVD] - Civil Defense Film with Bert The Turtle This Duck and Cover civil defense film is the original "nuclear attack safety film" that assures children protection from atomic bombs by getting low to the ground and covering up. A pillar of 1950s history, this hilariously ineffective nuclear survival technique has been satirically mimicked on countless occasions. The cutesy film features the animated character Bert the Turtle showing kids the classic "duck and cover" way to survive a nuclear attack. Bert is walking down the street, minding his own business, while the "duck and cover" theme song plays in the background: There was a turtle by the name of Bert and Bert the turtle was very alert; when danger threatened him he never got hurt he knew just what to do... He ducked! [inhalation sound] And covered! Ducked! [inhalation sound] And covered! A monkey in a tree then dangles a little piece of dynamite in Burts face, causing Burt to hide in his shell for cover, escaping the resulting explosion that takes out both the monkey and the tree! The film then switches to a live action family picnicking and the narrator advises children that when they see the flash of the bomb, they can survive as long as they crouch down and take cover. Duck and Cover is a riotous classic film exemplifying American governmental fear prevention and political propaganda.

Atomic Age Civil Defense Film Library DVD - Atomic Testing, Fallout Shelters, Duck & Cover, Poison Gas Warfare and More
Atomic Age Civil Defense Film Library DVD - Atomic Testing, Fallout Shelters, Duck & Cover, Poison Gas Warfare and More This classic collection of Civil Defense films were mostly created during the height of the cold war in the 1950's when there was a communist behind every bush and Nuclear War was going to happen at any instant. The films are both educational and entertaining as they are immersed in the knowledge and values of the 50's. You will learn how to defend yourself in the case of a gas attack (which may actually be good to know nowadays), how to hide in case The Bomb is dropped, how to deal with a nuclear fallout situation, and see how a city should be evacuated for an emergency and much more. Many of the films also have great shots of early nuclear testing explosions. Here are all the films that make up this historical collection: Duck and Cover (1951) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 9:15; The House in the Middle (1954) - Sound, Color Run time: 12:09; A Day Called X - Sound, Black & White Run time: 27:11; What to Do in a Gas Attack (1942) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 13:52; About Fallout (1963) - Sound, Color Run time: 22:25; Atomic Alert (Elementary version) (1951) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 10:13; Your Chance to Live: Earthwatch (1972) - Sound, Color Run time: 12:12; Radiological Defense (1961) - Sound, Color Run time: 26:17; Survival Under Atomic Attack (1951) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 8:45; Operation Cue (1964) - Sound, Color Run time: 14:02; About Fallout (1955) - Sound, Color Run time: 8:20; Our Cities Must Fight (1951) - Sound, Black & White Run time: 9:00; News Magazine of the Screen: Atomic Energy - Sound, Black & White Run time: 21:26; Medical Aspects of Nuclear Radiation (1950) - Sound, Color Run time: 20:14

Open Question: Apartment Disputes, PLEASE HELP!?
I live in Denver, Colorado. Recently my apartment complex sent us a notice with a list of damages that we are responsible to pay for, which is a load of crap anyway. But we are trying to take them to court to fight it. I am reading up on the Habitability codes and it says that "it is the condition of a building in which inhabitants can live free of serious defects that might harm their health and safety (ex. a lack of running water or heat adversely effects the apartment habitability. A colorado revised statue does not exist covering this type code. there are a number of communities which have habitability codes." So does that mean that I can't use the fact that our A/C and our Heat were broken for weeks, and that there are mice in the walls, and racoons coming into my patio and to my front door as a habitability code violation??? We have plenty of witnesses for our heat going out, the a/c going out, the racoons and for the mice in the walls. Also on apartment ratings.com SO many people complain about health issues, like mold growing inside the walls etc. Could I use any of that against them? Cause there were many many times that we called the maintenance and either nobody knew how to fix it, they never came, or they didn't get around to it for about a week and a half. I don't think that we should have to pay anything to that wretched place because we had to endure so much crap and harsh living conditions. They are trying to charge us 1,400 for carpet! There were probably a couple stains left in the living room AFTER we did spot cleaning and a full carpet cleaning. There would be no reason for them to replace all the carpet in the entire house. That's just ridiculous... if anyone has any suggestions on who I can contact about these health issues, or how I can use them in court, I would GREATLY appreciate it. We definitely contacted them about the ant infestation and they never went away. And we absolutely mentioned the a/c and the heat. It was bitter cold, and hella hot. Seriously ridiculous. We called everyday for about a week to two weeks and all they told us was that some people have been waiting months, and we'll just have to wait. Eventhough the conditions were almost unbareable. Especially the bitter cold. I had to wear winter jackets to sleep!! (more...)

Open Question: What does the A.I.D. in Colorado consider a "safety item"?
The law states that an auto dealership is not responsible for any repairs to a vehicle that is purchased "as is" or "no warranty" unless it is a "safety item". Does "safety item" mean a part that is specifically designed for safety, like seat belts, airbags, etc.? Or does it cover items that will cause the vehicle to be unsafe if not repaired? I just purchased a used vehicle. Upon test drive, I noticed it was "pulling" to the left. The salesman told me it needed a $40 alignment and it would be fine. Since the price of the vehicle was reduced so much, I would have to pay for it. I agreed and brought them the $40. After two days, I was told that it needed much more work to correct this problem, totaling $250 and to bring them the money or just pick up the car and deal with it myself. Unfortunately, the only thing I have in writing, is the receipt for the $40 that specifically says"for alignment". So, I looked up the state laws and found this part about "safety items".In my opinion, the vehicle is unsafe as it is unless it is repaired. Can I sue them for these costs and be awarded the repair costs or am I just out of luck? If I sue and lose, I will be responsible for court costs, right? I'm disabled and don't have much money so I can't afford this. Any advice from anyone would be sincerely appreciated. (more...)

Open Question: Dream of you everyday?
Day after day I see you from afar Sitting alone in my car I can only imagine you In the eternal journey That will be forever ours Traveling alone to no particular Until I see your shinning face On my brighten lunar But like the moon itself A dark cloud soon covers Into useless lovers My mind roams freely Always reaching to your safety But before I touch your hand You?ll always disappear Into the never land My cry goes unheard As if you were deaf Tearing me apart Like a broken art How can I see you again Without all the pain For every time I dream of you You are always far away I still dream of you everyday I haven't wrote in quite some time.... Open Question: My backpack has a drawstring instead of a zipper, so I can't lock it. Is it safe for traveling abroad?
I am backpacking in Central America for 4 months. I will mostly be in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I have a standard internal frame camping backpack that looks similar to this: http://www.ems.com/catalog/product_detail_square.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442596887&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302881156 It has a top that can expand as you add more stuff, and it closes with a drawstring. There is a flap with a pocket on it that covers the drawstring and buckles down. Is there any way for me to lock this type of pack? I know safety guidelines of how to take care of your belongings when they are with you, but I would normally lock my luggage when its at the hostel, on an airplane, etc. What should I do? (more...)

Open Question: very beginning of my story (short) opinions please?
The door of apartment number twenty-four slammed shut, rattling the old wood of the building. The building was old, built many years before. It was incredibly dirty from the decades of wear, and termites had begun to take over the wood. Sydney ran through the rooms, her long dark brown hair swung as she went. She hurried to her room, and the door quickly crashed back into its frame. She stood with her hand held against the door and closed her sky blue eyes as the tears begun to roll down her pale white cheeks. She turned her back against the door, and slid down, throwing her face into her hands. After a minute, she lifted her head and gazed around her room, the plain white walls and the white down torn up blanket thrown over her bed. Her bed stood placed upon the wall opposite the door, directly in the middle. On the right of her bed stood a small nightstand, painted white, only a small square of wood crudely placed upon four white legs. A pallid dresser with only four drawers stood on the left of her bed, the hinges hanging by a thread, and the drawers no more attached. The monotony of the colors bored her greatly, but she had no choice in the matter. The wall on the right side of her room held the only window, full of spidery cracks that crept across the surface and an aged look that left everything viewed through it covered with a tinge of yellow. Outside her window was the city, and not the beautiful part of the city that everyone fell in love with, no, it was the part of the city that everyone stayed away from for on every corner stood a man with a gun. Danger lurked no farther than three feet away where ever she went. She learned quickly to keep her eyes down and to avoid any confrontations. Even though she always followed the unwritten and unspoken rules of the city, it never fully guaranteed safety, which she learned today. Her and her friend Kayci had been walking home from school like always, laughing over the events of the day. They walked together on the bullet ridden sidewalk. Despite the danger, the city was their home, but that danger hit them full blown that day. A car sped down the street, a normality for the city but suddenly, it shirked to a stop. Kayci and Sydney both flung their heads towards the car as a click of a gun sounded. ?Run!? screamed Sydney but it was too late, the man had pulled the trigger and the bullet flew through the air, striking Kayci. She fell to the ground, her red curly hair a puddle around her head. The car once again gained speed and escaped from view. Sydney ran towards Kayci, every second passing so slowly. She flung herself beside her friend, and grabbed her hand in her own. She stared into her green eyes as the last remaining thread of life fled from her body. ?No!? Sydney screamed. Suddenly she felt hands behind her, pulling her away. ?Sydney, she?s gone. We can?t stay here, it?s not safe, and we have to go home. Now,? Her brother Zeke whispered in her ear. Zeke was one year younger at 15, although he had already outgrown Sydney in height years ago. His short, curly, dark blonde hair sat calmly upon his head, his skin slightly darker than Sydney?s, giving him a more sunlit look. Sydney stared into his dark brown eyes as he pulled her away from the corpse of her best friend. His strength amazed her, struggling against him was a futile attempt, for she was no match. She let him pull her down the sidewalk, running towards the safety of home. Her mind went blank in shock of the events, and all she was capable of doing was keeping her legs moving underneath her. Zeke continued to talk to her, trying to keep her from slipping away from him. When they reached home, Sydney broke away from her brother. She could see the events play out against her walls as if they were still occurring in front of her. She heard a light knock against her door. ?Sydney,? Zeke whispered through the door. She could feel the pain in his voice, yet it was nothing compared to the pain that rippled through her mind like raging flood waters. with the short after story it makes it sound like a short story, but its not. i'm hoping i can get it to about 200 pages in the end. Open Question: What is the title of this children's book?
My sister saw it in her school's book fair. The story went something like this: It was during the time of the Vietnam War. A little girl and her grandpa fled on a boat with the girl's grandma forcing her to leave to safety. On the boat, the girl asks her grandpa something along the lines of, "What's happening, Grandpa?" On the boat ride, there is very little food to share amongst the other escapees. The little girl's grandpa daily gives up his portion of food to the little girl so she won't starve, but in the end, he dies of starvation and malnutrition. I'm not quite sure if this is right, but it's vaguely how the plot goes. The cover was white and it might have had a (watercolor?) picture of a little Asian girl and her grandfather hugging. We're not sure about the cover though. If you could tell us what book this is, we'd greatly appreciate it! (more...)

Resolved Question: How likely is it that I am pregnant? Symptoms and scenario..?
am nearly 18 and have been with my boyfriend for 3 months. After 2 months we had sex, and the first time the condom split. The next day I took the morning after pill and the hospital put me on the contraceptive pill, but I didn't realize it didn't cover you till a week of taking it. My boyfriend and I had sex 5 times without protection before the pill would actually have began to work. About a week after I went to the hospital to have my blood pressure checked, and whilst I was there, decided to request a pregnancy test which was negative. However I was told that I may not have had enough hormones in me at the time and the test could be negative. Additionally, one night I was ill and was sick, and the pill would have got out of my system and maybe jeapodised my safety/ protection. Now, a month later, my boobs are bigger, slightly veiny, I have put on a little weight, I have a very light brown mark in my underwear every day, I feel distracted and almost tired at times and I'm peeing quite regularly... I haven't had a period for two months, as that is how long I have been taking the pill and I didn't have a break in between (when you are supposed to have your period), as I didn't want to be on over the xmas holidays. I know some of these symptoms can be from taking the pill, i.e. bigger boobs and slight weight gain, but I'm told the others are prodominantly early pregnancy symptoms. If I am pregnant, I won't get rid of the baby, I just want some opinions on whether you think I may be pregnant so I can think things through more seriously, as I have already been to the hospital once and wouldn't at this point like to return unless the chances I am are high. Please help, thanks :) xxx Earlier that day I went to the hospital I took a pregnancy test, and it was negative, so I don't want to keep buying them if it's unlikely I'm not cz I don't want to keep spending money if it's unlikely I am.. thats why I need opinions x . . Resolved Question: Is this an odd way to make my daughter sleep?
I have a 22 month old daughter. She has been in her toddler bed since about 15 months. She learned how to open her bedroom door a couple of months ago so for a while she of course kept leaving her bedroom. I started locking the door but then she learned how to unlock it. If her room was close to me when she naps this would hardly be a problem and I'd just walk her back in there. However, her bedroom is upstairs and I'd have to walk her back upstairs every 30 seconds. I frankly don't have much energy for those frikin stairs. I'm 6 months pregnant and they make me tired! She wouldn't stay in there for anything. She wouldn't really cry or whine about it though. So we tried the baby gate but she could see outside of her room and that actually did upset her for some reason (maybe because she could see outside her room?). We put a Safety 1st door knob cover on the inside of her door. She knows that it will not open so she doesn't even try and will usually fall asleep quickly and never cries. Even though she's ok in there and isn't upset, is this okay? It seems weird to "lock" her in there but it's the only way she'll go to sleep quickly (if she simply knows she can't get out). I check on her often and she kicks at the door when she wakes up lol, so it's not like I don't know when to get her out. And if this is ok, at what age will I know that she'll listen to me a little better when I tell her to stay in there? (more...)
