Despite critical barbs as sharp as a Maroobi spear, Gilligan's Island has proven unsinkable. Its first season was 1964's top-rated show. The expository theme song is one of television's most quoted, and its characters--the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.), first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), the millionaire (Jim Backus) and his wife (Natalie Schaefer), a movie star (Tina Louise), "and the rest" (Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, as the Professor and Mary Ann, wouldn't get their opening credit props until season two)--are pop culture icons. Revisiting the first season's 36 episodes is a not-guilty-at-all pleasure. Some sure and surprising hands piloted these inaugural episodes, including Ida Lupino, Jack Arnold (The Creature from the Black Lagoon), Christian Nyby (The Thing), and Richard Donner (who went on to direct Superman and Lethal Weapon).

The "seven stranded castaways" from the ill-fated S.S. Minnow (slyly named for former Federal Communications Commission head Newton "vast wasteland" Minow) received memorable visits from the likes of Hans Conreid as errant pilot Wrong Way Feldman, a young Kurt Russell as Jungle Boy, and Larry Storch as a Cagney-esque bank robber. But these were mere diversions from the heart of the series; the no-man-is-an-island social microcosm that creator Sherwood Schwartz conceived as an anti-war parable (this courtesy of his optional commentary during the fabled unaired series pilot). In the Christmas episode "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk," Santa Claus himself drops in to lift the disheartened castaways' spirits. "You could have been enemies," he tells them, "instead of a family group who all learned to get along." This is they key to this series' enduring popularity. Barry Manilow has sang Christmas songs. Michael Bolton. Other Jewish music artists have, as well. In "Elf", starring Will Farrell, James Caan, a Jew, stars as a Christian. Jewish actor Edward Asner also starred in that movie. Jewish actor Jeffrey Tambor played in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", starring Jim Carrey. Asner dressed as Santa Claus on Jay Leno's show the other night. Yes, Jesus Christ was Jewish when he lived on the earth. He always kept the Jewish beliefs and doctrines, observed the Sabbath, Passover, etc. Yet, the Jewish people don't believe He is the TRUE Son of God, which He IS! This is just a question why Jewish actors, singers, and other celebs engage in Christmas celebrations. Spread the GOOD NEWS that the Messiah, the Savior, Jesus Christ, was born!!! Celebrate this during the Holiday Season, and all through the year that we have a chance to be in Heaven someday, because of that blessed birth in Bethlehem!! I have been asking my son what he wants for Xmas and I have not been able to get him to tell me anything. I am not sure he even knows what he wants? He tells me things I know he probably wont like just because he cant think of anything? Indeed he is rather unusual or creative who does not like material things all that much. Indeed he is a very creative and almost intellectual child. He likes traditional stuff but I don?t think he really gets that much pleasure from them. I really want to get him something that will amaze him. Perhaps a really cool experience or something that he would find really interesting. He likes pro sports (NBA), reading, writing and film and is really into doing big city stuff (we live in Denver) though I cant think of anything that he would like their (indeed I don?t think he would want just a movie or jersey). Yesterday was the worst day of my life Ava thought as she picked up an old black piece of waste, her hair fluttered silently in the wind. It must have been a big building here Denver said as he walked closer. Ava threw the black piece of steel into the empty waste land surrounding them. All you could see for miles was burned land where skyscrapers and corporations once ruled, but it was a different time now. Denver was tall and muscular, he had several war scars over his body, but unlike others he didn?t hide them. His head was shaven and had a tan from the harsh rays of the sun. Behind him came more men, similarly dressed like him. Ava looked up at the sun, it was nearly morning. The men and Ava knew alike that if they didn?t find shelter soon there fait would be similar to the burned corpses possessing this land. Something caught Chivian?s eye, something colorful between the black dusts. He picked up what looked like a pamphlet on it stood the words New York. He looked back at the vast land of emptiness, dropped the pamphlet and said: ?good bye New York?, he turned around and walked away. This is the second ever story I wrote and it?s really just a rough draft. Keep in mind the picture that I had in my head for this was they were animations, like really good animations, like the Beowulf movie, where you can see every detail. I know I need to work on my grammar and stuff like that, but other than that, what do you think of my story? Please don?t be rude just honest. (more...)

We am driving out to Colorado this Thanksgiving. We go each year to Denver to visit our relatives and ski. However, we have never driven over 8 hours in a car. We hate to drive so we usually fly everywhere. However, with the economy being down and plane tickets being ridiculously high, we have to take the long trip out. So here's my question: I have a laptop and I bought a car charger for it so I can use it in the car. What could I do on my laptop in the car when I obviously have no Internet access on the road. I already have computer games, music, and stuff like that but does anyone have any other ideas? A good site to download games would be nice. Any suggested movies to rent to your laptop from blockbuster.com would be good too. Thanks (more...)
