Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet
Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet This disc introduces Yo-Yo Ma's latest and most ambitious adventure, the Silk Road Project. It explores the cultures that flourished along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that for centuries connected Europe and the East. Founded by Ma in 1998, the project aims to create connections, mutual trust, and cultural interchange between people from different parts of the world through their only shared language: music.

This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments. Ma, who participates in every piece either as soloist or part of the ensemble, plays cello and a Mongolian "horse-head fiddle." There is also a Mongolian soprano, who sings a traditional song native to her region. For the uninitiated Western listener, the music requires some getting used to. Much of it is based on rhythmic ostinatos. The melodies use Oriental scales; the intonation is untempered; the music seems all color, texture, and atmosphere, without what might be called themes; and repetition takes the place of development. Contrast is achieved through sudden change, buildup by adding instruments. However, the music is often beautiful, delicate, dreamy, or peaceful; every listener will find his or her own favorite pieces. The playing is splendid, with much inventive improvisation. Inevitably, Ma's tone and personality stand out, but he never dominates in fact or spirit. The booklet offers essays by Ma and the project's musicologist, Theodore Levin, photographs of the players, and drawings of the Eastern instruments. --Edith Eisler

Desert Hearts
Desert Hearts When college professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno in 1959 to get a quickie divorce, the last thing on her mind is romance. A prim intellectual, crippled by a sterile marriage ("We're a professional couple") and hiding behind her education, she moves into a ranch belonging to Frances Parker (Audra Lindley) and tries to keep to herself. But Parker's beautiful, sassy tomboy of a stepdaughter proves to be quite a distraction, and a love affair slowly blossoms. Cay (Patricia Charbonneau) refuses to be bound by convention or by expectations of how a nice girl should behave, and her devil-may-care attitude both attracts and terrifies the nervous professor.

Shaver is terrific as Vivian, and the slow thawing of her character is beautifully paced--you can feel the tension break when she finally lets down her guard. Another strong performance comes from Audra Lindley as Frances. She's a tough old bird with a drinking problem, but Lindley keeps the character from descending into stereotype, and she gives full rein to the tragic side of this lonely woman, especially as she struggles with her reaction to the developing relationship between Cay and Vivian.

There are scenes in Desert Hearts that would be painfully clichéd if they appeared in a heterosexual romance, and even here they only just escape that fate--relying a little too much on significant glances and lines that just don't sound like real conversation. Nevertheless, first-time director Deitch breathes new life into a standard straight-arrow-meets-free-spirit plot, and steadfastly refuses to turn this love story into an "issues movie." Add to that a strong feel for the period and a soundtrack filled with the likes of Patsy Cline and Gene Vincent, and the result is a warm, well-acted film that packs a real emotional punch. --Simon Leake

Resolved Question: Help finding an old PS1 fllight sim....?
So it was a PS1 flight sim. I might have some of the information confused, but here goes what I know: -The box art LOOKS like this: (This ISN'T the game!!) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/24/F-15_Strike_Eagle_III_Coverart.png -I'm positive it involved jets, and not WWII aircraft -It used Air, fuel, and ammo, all of which had to be picked up by floating air tanks, fuel drums, and ammo boxes. Sometimes the three would be wrapped together in a translucent black sphere with Black and Yellow warning stripe poles. -The 3 theaters of combat in the very beginning were in the arctic, a desert, and a foresty mountain region with a train you had to blow up -Shot down enemies would eject, and you could shoot at them while they parachuted and kill them. -Before each of the three missions, there was a cutscene with real video, acted out by people. Every time, the camera would advance through the entrance of the tent while the guard pointed his gun at you then lowered it, before panning to the briefing board. -In the desert level, you could blow up a giant rocket that was going to take off -When you died or ran of of fuel/air, the screen would turn red, keep panning even though your airplane crashed, and a guy would shout "EJECT, EJECT!!". I think the AI randomly did. -It was on the playstation one I think, and I remember playing it in 1999-2000. Does anyone know the name of this game? I really wanna find it, I don't think wikipedia had it listed, and not many people remember it. I never bought it; I rented it from a hollywood video down the street, but I regret not memorizing the name/buying a copy, because I really liked the BGM for the desert level. (it may have even been a beach level, because I think there was water in it....) If anyone remembers it, do you know the name, and where I can get it? Thx!! It wasn't Air combat; I have that game. And it was the first in the Ace combat series; I don't think it was either 2 or 3, either... Unfortunately, it isn't Mach either. The box art also looks like the box art from the game, but this is for a PSP, not a Playstation. They didn't have PSP's in the late '90's.... Did they? Anyone else able to take a swing at it? Resolved Question: What service medals did John McCain win and deserve?
McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while practicing landings. He was knocked unconscious by the impact coming to as the plane settled to the bottom. McCain's second crash occurred while he was deployed in the Mediterranean. "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula," Timberg wrote, "he took out some power lines [reminiscent of the 1998 incident in which a Marine Corps jet sliced through the cables of a gondola at an Italian ski resort, killing 20] which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral." McCain's third crash three occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. Timberg reported that McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" and went through standard relight procedures three times before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain landed on a deserted beach moments before the plane slammed into a clump of trees. McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. While seated in the cockpit of his aircraft waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain's plane. He escaped from the burning aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship. McCain's fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. McCain ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi. Silver Star, The Silver Star is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Army, is cited for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The required gallantry, while of a lesser degree than that required for the Distinguished Service Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction. a Legion of Merit for Valor b. The Legion of Merit is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States or a friendly foreign nation who has distinguished himself or herself by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. c. Criteria for members of the Armed Forces of the united States army as follows: (1) The performance must have been such as to merit recognition of key individuals for service rendered in a clearly exceptional manner. Performance of duties normal to the grade, branch, specialty, or assignment, and experience of an individual is not an adequate basis for this award. (2) For service not related to actual war, the term "key individuals" applies to a narrower range of positions than in time of war and requires evidence of significant achievement. In peacetime, service should be in the nature of a special requirement or of an extremely difficult duty performed in an unprecedented and clearly exceptional manner. However, justification of the award may accrue by virtue of exceptionally meritorious service in a succession of important positions. (3) Award will be made without reference to degree. , a Distinguished Flying Cross, The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the Army of the United States, distinguished himself or herself by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. The performance of the act of heroism must be evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. The extraordinary achievement must have resulted in an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding as to clearly set the individual apart from his or her comrades or from other persons in similar circumstances. Awards will be made only to recognize single acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement and will not be made in recognition of sustained operational activities against an armed enemy. three Bronze Stars, b. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Army of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy; or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. c. Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances described above, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star. t CarbonLi... Johnny's life is a lie, he is no hero, he did nothing heroic. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while interned as Prisoner of War ... That is not a heroic act of combat. On a purely medal count basis, he outweighs Murphy and Glenn, who both for years repeatedly performed extraordinary deeds on the ground or in the air against an armed enemy. Two Naval officers described the awards as "boilerplate" and "part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnamera) POWs." Yet in McCain's own words just four days after being captured, he admits he violated the U.S. Code of Conduct by telling his captors "O.K, I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." McCain's conduct while a POW negates these glowing comments. The facts are that he signed a confession and declared himself a "black criminal who performed deeds of an air pirate." McCain certainly doesn't appear to be a war hero by conventional standards, Someone asked what I did, I spent 16 months in it sand and the muck and the jungle. What did you do? Your zero hero did far less than I. Wayne.. I been shot at with bullets, and mortars thank God never hit. The size of the round that kills you don't matter. Ever seen a 2000 pound bomb from six feet away, I have and the B 52 that lost it. Hockey Fan - JPA High mountain tracker The most telling quote is from Sen. McCains own book. My other quotes come from a Col.David Hackworth. http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_hacker_2.htm . I disagree totally with you rendering, and find it contemptable that you would tarnish a man who served as well as the Lt:Cmdr, did. (OUT) I don't think you know that I am not alone. My cousin got no medals for his service he just left his life on 881. Sen. Obama did not serve in the military as you and I but he has served the people. We both know military service is not the only service. I am in no way taking anything away from his pow experience but there is a but there also Yet in McCain's own words just four days after being captured, he admits he violated the U.S. Code of Conduct by telling his captors "O.K, I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." Resolved Question: What Claim Do The Palestinians Have Over The West Bank?
The name Palestine refers to a region of the eastern Mediterranean coast from the sea to the Jordan valley and from the southern Negev desert to the Galilee lake region in the north. The word itself derives from "Plesheth", a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as "Philistine". Plesheth, (root palash) was a general term meaning rolling or migratory. This referred to the Philistine's invasion and conquest of the coast from the sea. The Philistines were not Arabs nor even Semites, they were most closely related to the Greeks originating from Asia Minor and Greek localities. They did not speak Arabic. They had no connection, ethnic, linguistic or historical with Arabia or Arabs. The Philistines reached the southern coast of Israel in several waves. One group arrived in the pre-patriarchal period and settled south of Beersheba in Gerar where they came into conflict with Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael. Another group, coming from Crete after being repulsed from an attempted invasion of Egypt by Rameses III in 1194 BCE, seized the southern coastal area, where they founded five settlements (Gaza, Ascalon, Ashdod, Ekron and Gat). In the Persian and Greek periods, foreign settlers - chiefly from the Mediterranean islands - overran the Philistine districts. From the fifth century BC, following the historian Herodotus, Greeks called the eastern coast of the Mediterranean "the Philistine Syria" using the Greek language form of the name. In AD 135, after putting down the Bar Kochba revolt, the second major Jewish revolt against Rome, the Emperor Hadrian wanted to blot out the name of the Roman "Provincia Judaea" and so renamed it "Provincia Syria Palaestina", the Latin version of the Greek name and the first use of the name as an administrative unit. The name "Provincia Syria Palaestina" was later shortened to Palaestina, from which the modern, anglicized "Palestine" is derived. This remained the situation until the end of the fourth century, when in the wake of a general imperial reorganization Palestine became three Palestines: First, Second, and Third. This configuration is believed to have persisted into the seventh century, the time of the Persian and Muslim conquests. The Christian Crusaders employed the word Palestine to refer to the general region of the "three Palestines." After the fall of the crusader kingdom, Palestine was no longer an official designation. The name, however, continued to be used informally for the lands on both sides of the Jordan River. The Ottoman Turks, who were non-Arabs but religious Muslims, ruled the area for 400 years (1517-1917). Under Ottoman rule, the Palestine region was attached administratively to the province of Damascus and ruled from Istanbul. The name Palestine was revived after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I and applied to the territory in this region that was placed under the British Mandate for Palestine. The name "Falastin" that Arabs today use for "Palestine" is not an Arabic name. It is the Arab pronunciation of the Roman "Palaestina". --- The "palestinans" say they are descendants of the philistines. Historically, the philistines only lived in the gaza area and up a few more miles along the shoreline. The Jews have had a presence in Israel from about 1200 BC by the Merneptah Stele, which refers to the victory the egyptians had over the people of Israel (the Israelites). The United Monarchy (also known as the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah) was when all the Tribes of Israel unified under one country. The capital of the United Monarchy was Jerusalem, this occurred around 1050 BC. The United Monarchy was then split into 2 sister states, the Kingdom of Israel (including Samaria as its capital) and the Kingdom of Judah (including Jerusalem as its capital) around 930 BC. During the time of the Kingdoms, many wars were brought upon them. Subsequently, too many wars caused the Kingdoms to collapse and the Kingdoms fell to the babylonians, persians, macedonians, assyrians, etc., but still maintained a Jewish presence. During the roman empire, the land that the Kingdoms were in was then named the Iudaea Province around 63 BC, which included Judah and Samaria. The "west bank" as it is called, is actually Judah and Samaria. The Jews revolted 3 times because of discrimination, religious persecution, desecration and other reasons. On the final revolt, the Bar Kokhba revolt, happening around 132 AD. The romans suppressed the revolt. The roman empire got annoyed with the revolts, so to punish the Jews, the roman empire renamed the Iudaea province to "syria-palaestina" to insult the Jews and disconnect them from their homeland. They renamed the Iudaea province to "syria-palaestina" because the long time enemies of the Jews are the assyrians and the philistines. They then separated "syria-palaestina" into 2 provinces to "palaestina I" and "palaestina II". After the roman empire fell the lands name stayed and "palaestina I and II" combined to become "palaestina". At the time of the muslim conquests of the 6th and 7th century, the muslims conquered what was known as "palestine" (really Judea and Samaria). The muslims of the muslim conquests either let the Jewish "palestinians" (Judeans and Samarians) either convert to islam or be killed. Since Judea and Samaria was renamed to "palestine" and stayed that name for over 1500 years with muslim influence, the palestinians in the "west bank" think they are actually palestinians like the palestinians from gaza. The name stayed "palestine" until the british mandate ended in 1948. So as you can see, "palestine" is a made up land. "palestinians" are actually in Jewish lands. And to really prove its Jewish land, there is scientific proof, that "palestinians" are descendants of Jews and christians. Read this: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/tcga/tcgapdf/Nebel-HG-00... "According to historical records part, or perhaps the majority, of the Moslem Arabs in this country descended from local inhabitants, mainly Christians and Jews, who had converted after the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD (Shaban 1971; Mc Graw Donner 1981). These local inhabitants, in turn, were descendants of the core population that had lived in the area for several centuries, some even since prehistorical times (Gil 1992). On the other hand, the ancestors of the great majority of present-day Jews lived outside this region for almost two millennia. Thus, our findings are in good agreement with historical evidence and suggest genetic continuity in both populations despite their long separation and the wide geographic dispersal of Jews." So tell me people, what claim do they have over the west bank? What claim do they have over Jerusalem for that matter? The palestinians say they are the indigenous people, saying they have been there since the very beginning and that the Jews have NEVER been there before the palestinians, which you can see, historically and scientifically that they are wrong in thinking that. So, tell me, what claim do they have? (more...)

I am very picky about the anime I choose to watch. I have watched anime series that fall into other cathegories than seinen, but mostly I only watch quality seinen. I'd appreciate if someone with a similar taste could provide some titles for anime that I should watch. I'll provide a list of some anime that I've enjoyed so far: FLCL Cowboy Bebop Big O Neongenesis Evangelion all Ghost in the Shell -related series Blood the last vampire Desert Punk all works by Satoshi Kon Patlabor movies Jin Roh Mushishi Otogiz?shi some Lupin III films Master Keaton Bartender Planetes I've liked others as well, but I've watched so much anime, that I can't remember every single one. Btw. if you're going to suggest Hellsing - don't; I found it dull and lacking, of what specifically, I can't say. (more...)
