Verdict on Auschwitz
Verdict on Auschwitz On August 20, 1965, after 20 months of proceedings, the verdict was pronounced in one of the most significant trials in German legal history. The court heard 360 Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp survivors and other witnesses from 19 countries, in a trial against 22 members of the SS, accused of taking part in the mass murder of millions.

VERDICT ON AUSCHWITZ: THE FRANKFURT AUSCHWITZ TRIAL 1963-1965 (produced by Hessischer Rundfunk, a German public television station) is a documentary of immense importance that illuminates not only the horrors of Auschwitz, but the chilling atmosphere of the courtroom in Frankfurt, Germany, almost twenty years after the Holocaust. Assembled from 430 hours of original audiotapes that languished in obscurity for decades, this film brings to life the voices of Auschwitz survivors, who confronted perpetrators they had not seen for twenty years-- many of whom had made comfortable lives for themselves in postwar West Germany.

VERDICT ON AUSCHWITZ addresses one of the most profound questions of justice in modern history. The trial raised myriad questions that have yet to be fully answered, as it is still comparatively under-researched. The film is thus not only of historical importance-- a chapter in the history of the Holocaust and in Germans' coming to terms with this legacy-- but it can also lead new audiences to consider the process of reckoning since 1945 in Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere.

Fred Rogers - America's Favorite Neighbor
Fred Rogers - America's Favorite Neighbor Writer, producer, puppeteer, songwriter--America's Favorite Neighbor takes a thorough look at the career of legendary children's television host Fred Rogers. Produced for Pittsburgh's WQED, this informative documentary tracks his rise as floor manager for various NBC programs, such as Your Hit Parade, to the major awards he received later in life, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Along the way, he's seen launching public TV programs The Children's Corner, which featured a soon-to-be-famous puppet named King Friday, and Canada's MisteRogers. The latter, naturally, was followed by Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which made its national debut in 1968, and would eventually became the longest running program in PBS history. Hosted by fellow Pennsylvania native Michael Keaton (Batman), who worked on his show in the early days, America's Favorite Neighbor is suitable for all ages, but is geared more towards adults, particularly parents and educators. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Almost Famous (2000)
Almost Famous (2000) Almost Famous is the movie Cameron Crowe has been waiting a lifetime to tell. The fictionalization of Crowe's days as a teenage reporter for Creem and Rolling Stone has all the well-written characters and wonderful "movie moments" that we expect from Crowe (Jerry Maguire), but the film has an intangible something extra--an insider's touch that will turn the film into the ode to '70s rock & roll for years to come. We are introduced to Crowe's alter ego, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), at home, where his progressive mom (Frances McDormand, just superb) has outlawed rock music and sister Anita (Zooey Deschanel) has slipped him LPs that will "set his mind free." Following the wisdom of Creem's disheveled editor, Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman in an instant-classic performance), Miller gets on the inside with the up-and-coming band Stillwater (a fictionalized mixture of the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, and others). A simple visit with the band turns into a three-week, life-altering odyssey into the heyday of American rock. Of the characters he meets on the road, the two most important are groupie extraordinaire Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in a star-making performance) and Stillwater's enigmatic lead guitarist (Billy Crudup), who keeps stringing Miller along for an interview. From the handwritten credits (done by Crowe) to the bittersweet finale, Crowe's comedic valentine is an indelible, heartbreaking romance of music, women, and the privilege of youth. --Doug Thomas

Curb Your Enthusiasm - The Complete Second Season
Curb Your Enthusiasm - The Complete Second Season It's more of the same for Larry David's sitcom from HBO, and for fans, that's a good thing. The show--largely extemporized--follows suit of David's former series, Seinfeld: it's a show about nothing, just the everyday life of the star going about his pseudo-real world. But David's show has far more edge (thanks, in part, to airing on cable TV) with all the bad luck, embarrassing situations, and dreadful behavior as its premiere season. The closest thing to an arc is David's season-long pitch to the networks for a new show starring former Seinfeld stars Jason Alexander and Julia-Louis Dreyfus. Each network is lampooned, especially HBO, which David has a bad history with in this alternate world. Sure to repel those with soft funny bones, Curb's acerbic comedy allows jokes where David is accidentally framed--if ever so briefly--as a child molester, wife abuser, or murderer. But for those who do love his shtick, there are big laughs, especially when we bump into characters as unbridled as David, like a fellow writer who is quite protective of his dad's invention, the Cobb salad.

Many comic actors pop up, some as "themselves" (Richard Lewis, Rob Reiner) and others as characters (Rita Wilson, Ed Asner) along with the delights of co-stars Cheryl Hines as David's wife and his affable manger, Jeff Garlin. There are several touchstone bits: what a thong brief can do to a relationship, a run-in with pro wrestler, Larry's first baptism, and one very collectible doll. To pick one episode to capture this second season--and its grandstanding nature--it would be "Shaq," in which the NBA star is accidentally tripped, changing David's usual bad luck with gut-busting results. --Doug Thomas

Open Question: How do transvestites wear like G-strings,women's under wear and swim suits. ?
Wouldn't they see their penis sagging out their swim suits and stuff. Like in the movie White Chicks when those cops had to go undercover and dress up as these two famous twin modelers. They were like at the beach wearing swim suits and stuff how did they manage to cover the bump between their legs and their gentles don't sag out so that it won't blow their cover so people wont get suspicious about them. Sorry about my grammar (more...)

Open Question: Something that bothers me for a long time?
I am an immigrant who came to the U.S. a few years ago I wish I could believe this but I can't, and it bothers me when I think about the future the thing is Everyday when I turned on TV, there are always TV shows, news, movies, about spouse and girlfriend/boyfriend cheating on each other. Cheating, sex, cheating,sex....is all i see on TV, cough "Jerry Springer"cough, and very few shows I seen are about long term marriage commitment And then there are always some famous people cheated on his/her wife/husband, Clinton, Edward, etc. I wish that all I see does not reflex whole America, but it is very misleading, and some parts of myself is not that convinced Today, I just seen a news that says two people are filing divorce, the husband wants the kidney he gave to his wife when she needed one back. Why they divorce, his wife cheated on him...after he did that?! unbelievable so... Is marriage in America only about enjoying sex/money/power, or is it about love and commitment that does not affected by the sexual/money/power needs? In other word, do normal Americans seek things like sexual pleasure only with their spouses or would they seek somewhere else when the needs are not fulfilled? Please make me believe that a healthy matrimony is possible here (more...)

Open Question: What movie about Rockin' would you change?
What movie about Rock would you change? Biographical, or anything! A lot of movies are made about rock stars or rockin' out but sometimes can be displeasing for fans. Which one would you want to re-do? and why or how? Plus, what is your favorite rockin' movie of all time? The one I wish they would do-over is The Doors. Even though I think Val Kilmer did a fantastic job, I think Oliver Stone missed a lot and didn't show another side to Jim Morrison that is so often reported, his Southern Gentleman side. His sweet side. I overall like the movie, but am bothered at the same time. My favorite movie must be Almost Famous, can't help but love all of the Zep references, and it's very well made and thought out in it's detail. I hear ya Jim's Room. I most of all feel bad for Patricia Kennealy. School of Rock is great, but I agree they should have won!! (As a parent that loves to rock, I couldn't help but love this movie.) I wish they had a different guitarist kid though. I know it sounds mean, but he could play a guitar but woo couldn't act! Rockstars great but yeah, Rob's more hardcore than that! (more...)

Open Question: Would you want your child to become a crook, or either a doctor or a lawyer?
I really don't think doctors or lawyers are different from crooks. The industries that I hate the most in America now are the entertainment, sports, health care and legal industries, among others. If you can name any more, I would welcome it. 1. The movie industry is charging almost 10 dollars for a bag of small popcorn and a drink. It's a luxury now to eat that crap. That is so mean. 2. Eating food at the stadium is ridiculous too. The tickets are overpriced too. 3. The health care industry is clearly not managing their costs properly. People go bankrupt if they're sick...is that right? 4. I was reading the Detroit News yesterday. A woman involved in Kwame Kilpatrick's scandal owes legal fees of $750,000 to her attorneys, plus $100,000 in restitution to the city of Detroit. She will likely never work for a great wage again given her record, HOW WILL SHE PAY THIS BACK? Why should it cost so much to defend yourself? The only reason doctors and lawyers make so much is because they extort working people. The sports stars and movie stars, well, they make money because they are famous, but when you see the Yankees paying an athlete 20+ million a year in a depression, it makes you wonder! Kit Fang, as soon as I heard you were a law student, you lost your credibility! Law students are the worst breed of people out there. You couldn't get a job out of undergrad, so you went to law school, and now you think you are smarter than everyone, and that lawyers hold some sword of justice. Wait until you get in the real world, and no, you're not going to be rich like Ellen Parsons from Damages. (more...)
