The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat
The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat The mysterious source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein break open the Watergate scandal in 1972 remained hidden for thirty-three years. In The Secret Man, Woodward tells the story of his long, complex relationship with W. Mark Felt, the enigmatic former No. 2 man in the FBI who helped end the presidency of Richard Nixon. The Secret Man brings to a close one of the last chapters of Watergate.

The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat
The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat Bob Woodward's secret man is no longer a secret, now that former FBI assistant director W. Mark Felt and his family have revealed that he was Deep Throat, Woodward's legendary anonymous source for his Watergate reporting. Soon after Felt made his identity known, Woodward, who "is prone to complete his homework before it is due or even assigned," according to the afterword by his reporting partner Carl Bernstein, himself revealed that he had been working on a manuscript in preparation for that moment, one that would after 30 years tell the inside story of their mysterious, and history-changing, relationship.

Certainly you get in The Secret Man the cloak-and-dagger details you'd expect--and are likely already familiar with from both the book and the superb movie of All the President's Men: the late-night garage meetings, the red flag in the flower pot, the whispered warning that lives were in danger. Woodward retells the still-riveting story of his and Bernstein's unearthing of the scandal with efficiency and with the last puzzle piece in place. And he is able both to explain some of Felt's motivations, as an FBI loyalist disgusted by Nixon staffers trying to run roughshod over his agency, and to trace some of his remarkable bureaucratic tactics, including commissioning an FBI leak inquiry and deflecting it away from himself. Most fascinatingly, he gives a warts-and-all account of his shameless youthful cultivation of Felt, beginning with their first encounter when Woodward was a bored Navy lieutenant on the make, just three years before being assigned to cover the arraignment of five men in business suits arrested in the offices of the Democratic National Committee. But in a crucial way this doesn't seem to be the book that Woodward had wanted to write, for Felt remains a mystery. A shadowy father figure during the Watergate period, Felt soon distanced himself from Woodward after running into legal trouble of his own, and they fell out of touch in the intervening years. When Woodward finally reestablished contact in 2000, Felt had lost most of his memory, and any understanding with his former source, with whom he was so closely tied in both his private and public lives, remained poignantly but frustratingly unreachable. --Tom Nissley

Open Question: Top 10 heavyweights do you agree?
1)Muhammad Ali - For 10 years after Marciano the title had changed hands back n forth with no champion being thoroughly dominating or creating much buzz in boxing until the Louisville lip came to the scene and showed the world that a heavyweight could be fast and box like a middleweight. He predicted rounds, wrote poems and brought excitement back into boxing. He dominated his competition even making the most dangerous man of his time quit on his stool. At only 15 and 0 he dominated the legendary Archie Moore and Ali made sure that the only man worth talking about for the next 15 years was Muhammad Ali. He was the first man to win the heavyweight title 3 times and is still regarded as the best heavyweight champion of all time. 2)Mike Tyson a 10 year old boy who was picked on and called "fairy boy" changed the sport of boxing at 20 became the youngest heavyweight champion in history for mike tyson it wasnt age or skill that beat mike tyson it was mike tyson himself and help from don king that defeated Mike Tyson 3)Joe Louis Even though he lost an early fight to Max Schmeling he still dominated in spectacular fashion every other heavyweight at the time. After winning the title from Jimmy Braddock he defended his title 26 times over 10 years including a first round knockout over Schmeling in the rematch. For 10 years he was Americas champion and hero. From the mid 1930's t0 the late 40's and into the 50's their was no other name more herald then Joe Louis. 4)Larry Holmes Beat Ken Norton for the vacant title left behind after Ali's retirement. Later he beat a Parkinson's riddled Ali for the Lineal title. He defended his title 20 times taking on anyone and everyone. Going 48 and 0 fighting the the best the division has to offer and not losing until age caught up with him and dropping a decision to a faster fighter his old legs just couldn't keep up with. Until age caught up with Holmes he was virtually unbeatable and is often picked to beat any heavyweight at any time. A slick boxer puncher with an Iron jaw and nerves of steel. At almost 40 years old he had the balls to step in the ring with the young monster Iron Mike Tyson and although he lost he showed no fear over the brutal 4 rounds. 5)George Foreman The baddest man on the planet in the 70's, a big monster with power in eaither hand who blasted through greats Joe Frazier and Ken Norton before meeting his match against the Greatest. In a slug fest that may go down in history as the most action packed heavyweight fight in history with Ron Lyle Foreman rose from the canvass to stop the game Lyle in 5 action packed rounds. He retired and came back to win the title as the oldest man in the history of the sport at 45 years old he knocked out the heavyweight champion Micheal Moorer. 6)Jack Johnson A black heavyweight champion when black people were still being hung and beat down in the street. The man beat his competition senseless even toying with a handful of his white opponents in turn enraging the white populous that made up the boxing crowd. Lost his title to Jess Willard in a fight he later admitted he had thrown for fear of being murder. 7)Lennox Lewis Other then 2 knockout losses (One controversial) which he later avenged in spectacular fashion Lennox was one of the most dominant champions in history. When it came to his D and C level opponents he didn't just beat them he destroyed them and destroyed them quickly. Lewis un like other Greats did not come into his prime it seemed till later in his career. Lewis was a big heavyweight who knew how to use his height and size to his advantage. Lennox took allot of flack for his chin which I beleive is unfair. Lewis has been in the ring with some of the biggest punchers in the sports history, Frank Bruno,Ray Mercer, Mike Tyson, Razor Ruddock,Tony Tucker, Tommy Morrison, Andrew Gollota, Shannon Briggs, Fracois Botha,David Tua, Oliver McCall, Hasim Rachman and Vitili Klitchko. In fact Frank Bruno took a power test and is on record as being the hardest hitting heavyweight of all time. Lennox is also only the second heavyweight in history to beat every man he ever faced. He cleaned up the heavyweight divivison. Whenever a heavyweight is as dominant as Lewis you get a dead division after he leaves. 8)Rocky Maricano The Rock got recognition as the true and lineal heavyweight champion after beating an old Joe Louis. He was known as The Rock around the world and was loved by millions. His aggressive power style made him the most exciting champion to come along since Jack Dempsey. He is still to this day the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated. 9)Jack Johnson A black heavyweight champion when black people were still being hung and beat down in the street. The man beat his competition senseless even toying with a handful of his white opponents in turn enraging the white populous that made up the boxing crowd. Lost his title to Jess Willard in a fight he later admitted he had thrown fo (more...)

Open Question: What is the meaning of the Christmas carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels SIng"?
HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King, peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; with th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!" Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord; late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th' incarnate Deity, pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!" Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give us second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!" (more...)

Resolved Question: History Source Questions: Help Please?
I need help with a Higher History past paper. You need to compare two sources but I'm not too sure what to say about them. Source B: Many of your correspondents would like Britain to take a more active part on the side of the anarchists, communists and others who make up the so-called Government of Spain. There is in fact an international brigade fighting on the Government side and the deaths of a few Scots have been reported. These Scots appear to have been of a communist turn of mind and connected with extreme views when in Scotland. It is of course common knowledge that Russia has been deeply interested in Spanish politics for some time. The real point to consider is the fact in Franco's territory business and social life is going on as normally as difficult conditions permit. When Franco and the Nationalists got control the country settled down at once. There are many in this country who hope that Franco will win and a reign of order and law will return to Spain. Source C: It cannot be repeated too often that, if General Franco and his allies were to win, France would be encircled by hostile states & in the near future we should be faced with a general European war with the Mediterranean closed to us. The policy of government representing the real interests of the people of Britain should be a return to the League of Nations and to restore to the Spanish Government its legal right to purchase arms freely. This step, if taken at the beginning, might have enabled the Spanish Government to put down the rebellion. The alternative is to continue giving way to dictators in the name of peace until finally we are left to face them alone. Let us put collective security into practice and save Spain and our democracy before it is too late. Please help, I'm just not sure how to do these questions. & if you need to know, both sources were written into the Herald Newspaper in 1938. (more...)

Resolved Question: Godzilla (from Godzilla Final Wars after infinite power boost) vs. Galactus (Comic book, not movie)?
I' m just trying to find out everyone's opinion here. Godzilla (from GFW w/ infinite power boost): The most powerful form of Godzilla. Litterally has infinite amount of power that makes him invulnerable. Burning Godzilla (from Godzilla vs. Destroyah), was said to have power that was never seen since the beginning of time (Big Bang), and GFW Godzilla has that power plus more stored inside him, and he can control it very well. Galactus: A cosmic being that can eat planets. He needs planets that can support life to keep himself alive. He has many heralds that served him in the past to find planets good enough to eat. The most famous cosmic being. *note: contrary to popular belief, Galactus isn't actually that big. He's about the size of King Kong. For balance reasons (considering Godzilla can eat Galactus), Galactus is Godzilla's height. The scenerio: Galactus has come to Earth to feed on it. Godzilla apparently doesn't want that. Galactus and Godzilla fight for Earth's fate. Rules: Galactus doesn't have any herald help and he cannot teleport Godzilla anywhere. (more...)

Resolved Question: What's with alll this hype over Juno ? The movie has a terrible message?
Does anyone find nowadays that the media and people in general seem to feel duty bound to herald stupid movies ! I am left to think that the ONLY reason people are praising this movie at all, is because of its offensive nature. > I casually goes over the issue of teenage pregnancy as if its as simple as deciding whether to give up your pet dog , or keep it. Some of my fellow critics of this movie say that the movie is very conservative.. but I beg to differ. There is nothing conservative or even realistic about Juno's parents reaction to her pregnancy ! There is no long argument, no condemnation, nothing. What I dislike about this movie ( and its apparent fame) is that despite its fame, despite its critical success, despite the beautiful star actress.. it is a GROSSLY simplified and unrealistic protrayal of teenage pregnancy. I have been exposed this sort of situation ... my older brother knocked up his high school sweet heart ( they were 15 at the time) ... and you know what... no matter how much " in love" a teenage couple is before the pregnancy.. EVERYTHING changes ! The interaction between juno and her 'boyfriend' is unrealistic ! I'm a teenager myself, and i feel insulted by this movie ! If I got my girlfriend pregnant.. i'm pretty sure that a) we would start arguing b) my parents would give me a long condenscending lecture ..and my mother would probably throw a fit ! While I know that movies often stray from reality.. I find it totally inappropriate for such an important topic to be handled so casually. I mean, you'd swear Juno was giving up her pet dog instead of he own child. (more...)

Resolved Question: Ah, Desmond Tutu wants white people to go into Zimbabwe and remove the black leader, what is wrong with this?
In 1979, I traveled to southern Africa. On my way home, I read the International Herald Tribune newspaper the airlines provided. In there was a story about Robert Mugabe and his men using a Soviet built SAM (surface to air) missile to shoot down a Civilian airliner. They then went to the crash site and murdered the survivors or at least some of them. The west was all for forcing the white government of Rhodesia to turn control over to black terrorists. At that time, Rhodesia was the bread basket of Africa, exporting food to countries all over Africa. Now, the same people who wanted black control want white people to go in there and rebuild the country. I figure they got what they wanted, so let them enjoy it. BTW, Mugabe was big buddies with Andrew Young, Carter's Ambassador to the UN and Maynard Jackson, mayor of Atlanta, who held a $1k a plate fund raiser for Mugabe and his terrorists AFTER their heinous attack on civilians. I guess we see how good Liberals are at solving problems. If you don't know what I am talking about, then go find a question you do understand. If you need a link, then you need to go somewhere else. Resolved Question: book help? i need help?
okay. im wrighting a book and i need to know if im good or not. just read. it kinda wont make sense. the wind flew on top of the mountains, canceling out the dust in the air. although there were no plants, the sight of the unk-tar mountain range was a wonder in the world. the tips of each peak was gray, and the sides of the shadow were violet, yet the majesty of the displacement left Mark speechless. Mark Herald had nowhere left to run. after many years of fighting in the war, his army lost, his love dead, he finally found a place of refuge. he walked down the path well worn and came to rest on a rock. his armour once red with a sheen had been dulled and blunted from the long days of fighting of the wild. his hair tore as he swept his hands throught it. "what will i do now? noone will help me, and im at the edge of teh world. maybe shellah was right. maybe . . ." he picked up his rusted sword that was carelessly thrown on the ground. he picked it up and reconsidered his action, but in one fell swoop, he delivered the final blow to his abdomen. blood dropped to the ground in piles as gore and intestines fell out after. his vision blurred as he saw an old man dressed in brown with white edgings come up before him. Mark's eyes finally failed him as he swept into unconciousness. blood surrounded him. red blood. dead blood . . . Thoran the Great, wizard of old, master of magic rubbed his beard as he puzzled himself with the young man. the man, Mark, had tried to kill himself. Thoran, though, had found out his name by searching threw his mind. it wasnt a very nice bussiness, but it was needed. he had pulled the youth into his secret cavern which was hidden by magic. but Mark was in trouble, and Thoran would not let a man die if he could stop it. it had tooken hours to heal him. first, he neede to heal the wound. second, he needed to illiminate the rust infection within the body. second, he had to place enchantments on the boy to ward off harm and pain. healing was a nasty thing to do. it took time and strength. mental and physical. but Thoran hoped it was worth it. it had to be. for Mark might help him with the deadly secret of which he kept. the reason why he was hidden in the mountains in the first place. Resolved Question: way to make money for a 15 year old?
I already do a paper round but I want to make more money. A boy in my class said he knocks on his neighbors doors and asks if they want him to delivery their favourite newspaper to their house (The Daily Mail, The Sunday Times, The Herald etc). He buys the newspaper from the shop and sells it to them for a bit more. He delivers to 7 quite a few houses and makes over £10 a week. Is this legal and do you think its a good idea? (more...)

Voting Question: Has anyone heard of David Wilkerson's book 'The Vision' which prophesies much of our times?
In 1973, Wilkerson claimed to have received a vision regarding the future of the United States and subsequently gave a sermon on the vision and published a book called The Vision. Wilkerson believed that God had revealed to him a great calamity which was going to befall America due to increase in sins such as homosexuality, sexual promiscuity, and greed. Some of the details of this 1973 vision were: "Worldwide recession caused by economic confusion" "At most a few more fat flourishing years, and then an economic recesion that's going to affect the life style of every wage-earner in the world. The world economists are going to be at loss to explain what's happening. It's going to start in Europe, spread to Japan and finally to the United States." There will be a move toward a worldwide, unified monetary system. The US dollar will be hit bad and it will take years for it to recover. The only real security will be in real estate (until a somewhat later stage, at which point this apparent security will also disappear). "Nature having labor pains" Environmentalists will come under heavy criticism. There will be major earthquakes. There will be a major famine. Floods, hurricanes and tornadoes will increase in frequency. "A new kind of cosmic storm appearing as a raging fire in the sky leaving a kind of vapor trail." "A flood of filth and a baptism of dirt in America" Topless women will appear on television, followed by full nudity. Adult, X rated movies will be shown on cable television. Young people will gather at homes to watch this kind of material in groups. Sex and the occult will be mixed. There will be an acceptance of homosexuality, and the church will even say that it is a God-given gift. "Rebellion in the home" "I see the new number one youth problem in America and the world as hatred towards parents." "A persecution madness against truly Spirit filled Christians who love Jesus Christ" There will arise a world church consisting of a union between liberal ecumenical Protestants and the Roman Catholic Church, using Christ in name only. There will be a hate Christ movement. There will be a spiritual awakening behind the Iron and Bamboo Curtains. There will be another wave of riots. There will be a fall in moral conduct. There will be a new drug that will be popular with teenagers that will break down resistance and will encourage sexual activity. Homosexual and lesbian ministers will be ordained and this will be heralded as a new breed of pioneer. There will be nude dancing in church, but this will never be widespread. There will be occult practices in churches. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wilkerson Thanks for all the responses so far. Yes, Anastasia I am not up on history as you are, but I very much doubt that a small town preacher from Pennysylvania in 1973 would have been either and could have just fluked all of this from his imagination! Even with the access to information that we have today, I wonder if anyone else out there could make as startlingly accurate a series of predictions for the condition of the United States (if there still is such a place) in the year 2043? Hardly anyone must have heard of it by the looks of things! Apparently, its sales were incredibly minor at the time of publication too. Perhaps it all seemed a little to far-fetched? (more...)
