How the Technology Works
The underlying technology in the Accelerator Series Watches is an accelerometer sensor. Accelerometers are used to measure acceleration. Originally developed during the Space Race to replace outdated gyroscopes, accelerometers can be found in a diverse range of today's products such as automobile air bags and tilt meters. In the Accelerator watch, a user's movement (acceleration) produces varying degrees of electric current within the sensor, allowing the watch to detect different levels of acceleration, and therefore measure speed and distance.
Another way to explain how an accelerometer sensor works is to envision a marble in a bowl. When the bowl is moved, or accelerated, the marble inside will roll (accelerate) along the bottom and sides of the bowl. When the bowl is accelerated faster, the marble will move a greater distance up the sides. The accelerometer sensor in the Accelerator Series watch acts like an electronic marble in a bowl. With every step forward, the wearer of the watch (bowl) is accelerating forward. By measuring the acceleration of the "marble", the software inside the watch can then calculate the wearer's speed and distance.
The Competition
There are really only a few different ways to calculate the speed and distance of human-powered, on-foot travel. The first was basic math, next came the mechanical pedometer, followed by satellite tracking GPS years later. Mechanical pedometers are cheap and abundant, but also highly unreliable. They operate on a simply pendulum clicker that relies on the walker's hip movement to count steps. Unfortunately, mechanical pedometers end up counting a lot of non-walking movements and assume that walkers are making consistent and repetitive steps.
GPS technology is impressive, but also expensive, complex, and not always ideal for outdoor activities or indoor training. Satellite signals can be lost in heavily forested areas, indoors, or behind large buildings and receiving signals eats up batteries. When a good signal can be found, often the device does not receive info often enough to account for twisty backcountry trails.
The Future
The Tech 4 O Accelerator Series fills the void between old mechanical pedometers and the overkill of GPS. A simple, yet versatile, wrist-watch design can provide extremely accurate speed and distance data in all conditions.

Open Question: What do you think of my story so far??? VERY LONG.?
I waited eagerly for my best friend Becky, to arrive in La Beouf, one of the several cafés that resided in my small hometown, Hermthone.
She won?t be late. I told myself. She never forgets my birthday.
I drummed my fingers idly on the table I sat at, with my head resting in one hand, and my other hand trying to coax a wandering straw to stay in one place, while I attempted to drink my glass of - now warm - lemonade. I really wished I had something better to do other than bob my head up and down every two minutes, to check if she was coming through the window beside me. Unfortunately for me, there wasn?t much else to look at here, accept for the aging, croissant-related wallpaper that plastered the walls.
The café was quiet and empty. The only people in there besides myself were the staff and an old lady, who?s poor arms looked too frail to even hold the teacup she had pressed to her lips. The tangerine coloured clock ticked annoyingly loudly as the mi
nutes passed, and I continued to do more head bobbing and wallpaper staring.
Where IS she. I thought to myself. Perhaps I better g-. My thoughts were interrupted when two of people entered the café. I looked up, hoping that Becky would miraculously be with them; I was beginning to get tired of waiting. My eyes casually wandered over to the girl and boy that stood in front of the café door. They looked about seventeen, my age, and were pretty unusual looking, no-one I had ever seen before. They were carrying rather large backpacks, their clothes cut and torn, their hair wild and uncared for. Hikers. I thought.
My eyes first studied the girl. She was quite possibly the most unusual, yet striking, person I had ever laid eyes on. Her wavy, bright crimson red hair messily cascaded past her sharp, bony shoulders, delicately to her small waist, and was decorated with twigs and leaves. Her porcelain skin was blemish-free, and her face; the face of an angel, was very small, angular and almost pixie-like. Her eyes were sapphire in colour. She wore very loose fitting cargo pants which were very unflattering, and a navy jumper that looked at least 3-sizes too large. Her trainers were muddy and worn, and her navy backpack looked like it would snap her slender frame of roughly five feet, to pieces.
Her companion was quite different. His medium-length dark brown, could-be-mistaken-for-black hair was too, decorated with vegetation, and added mystery to his half-hidden sapphire stare. His medium build physique, towered gloriously over the girl, he was very tall next to her, probably six feet if not more, and his bronze skin shimmered in the florescent lighting. He too, wore ragged clothing; grass stained jeans, old trainers, and a turtleneck jumper with a backpack firmly placed upon his back. Despite his healthy body, his face was gaunt; his cheekbones jutted out alarmingly, as if he had been starving himself for weeks, and had only lost the weight on his face.
He looked ill. The only similarity between the boy and the girl, were their eye colour and emaciated faces.
Before I could conclude his features any longer, he spoke.
?Not here.? the boy said forcefully, his eyes darted about nervously under his mane as he listened to her retort.
?It is perfectly fine here, Nick. Don?t be awkward now, we?ve already told them to meet us here.? the girl spoke with a soft, yet firm voice.
?But that wasn?t a joint decision, now, was it?? he added slyly. The girl sighed,
tossed her crimson hair over her shoulder nonchalantly, and rolled her eyes at his remark. Her hair disturbed the air, sending wafts of a mouth watering fruity scent in my direction. I fought the urge to idiotically wave my hands about in the air, in gesture to try and cup the scent and force it towards my face so I could indulge in it a little longer. I fought that urge with great difficulty. Nice shampoo. I thought.
?Please. Please, Mel?? the boy started to beg, pressing his hands together as if to pray. ?Please??
?Definitely not, Nicholas! Stop moaning, people will start to stare.? she warned him, her eyes gleaming with annoyance.
?Like who? There is a little old lady, and a girl about our age.? he sneered.
?Yes. Those are people, good work.? she agreed sarcastically. ?People who will be very irritated if we keep this cabaret up. I don?t think the old lady can quite hear us, but the girl most certainly can.? she sighed, inspecting her already perfect fingernails for imperfections.
At the mention of my presence, I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, and as if that didn?t give away my inquisitiveness enough, my hand twitched and knocked over the ketchup and mustard sachet bowl that lived on the café table, I felt the sapphire eyes burn into my face.
I scrambled down to pick the sachets up, but before I could get there in time, they were already in the palms of other person; a person with bronzed skin. I dared to look up, just peeking through my brunette curls.
The blue pools stared back

Open Question: Appalachian Trail Hikers -- How long should I allow to get from central CT to the trail's end at Mt Katahdin?
I will be with a friend. We both have backpacking experience, including some 4,000 footers, but we take a fairly slow pace.
We hope to start in Connecticut at the end of August.
I would love to hear from people who have actually hiked this section. How long did it take you, and do you have any special pearls of wisdom?

Resolved Question: What to get the mountain hiker who has everything? ?
I need a gift idea for an avid mountain hiker and camper. He doesn't rock climb, just scrambles. He hikes to remote places and camps, usually 2-3 day hikes. He has all the basics (good quality) backpack, basic Garmin GPS, tent, poles, boots, first aid kit, etc. So I need an idea that goes beyond those basics.

Preface
Burning, burning pain was ripping me apart. I could?t bring my self to admit what had happened. I suddenly lost the ability to cry although this was the first time I had cried.
The physical pain went away. Only the emotional was left. It slashed at me shredding me into thousands of pieces.
I lay motionless on the forest floor. Had the gods put this upon me? Or was this foul immortality the wish of the grim reaper? Fate perhaps?
What use is immortality if your heart and soul are kept by your love? The burning came back to only my throat as I sat up.
Chapter 1
I stood in the middle of a forest in Georgia. I looked like a lost hiker (jeans, backpack etc.). As I
Started to walk I composed a worried look on my face. I looked at my surroundings every thirty seconds or so just like a lost girl in the woods.
I was only doing this because it proved faster in what I was trying to accomplish. It was annoying to dress in tight jeans and act prissy. It was also embarrassing to look so scared and worried. I had a well known reputation for not screaming or crying.
What use are tracking skills if your bait? I stood for a few more moments and then I was fed up with it. Adam and I had hunted this vampire for a week and it was getting old.
The bushes to my right rustled. 'Finally' I thought. I composed the same worried look on my face and looked into the crimson eyes of the vampire that emerged.
He had short black hair and pale skin. He looked into my wide green eyes and licked his lips. I stepped back mock horror still on my face. He stepped forward crouching into an attack position. It looked like he wasn't going to bother talking.
I composed my face into one of boredom. This surprised the vampire, I summoned rose, my weapon.
Rose is an exact copy of the weapon the grim reaper uses. It was a birthday present from my father, god of the underworld.
I listened to my surroundings. Adam was coming in his wolf form. He wouldn't be too happy if I took care of the vampire myself. The vampire seemed to have regained his confidence. He leaped too quickly for me to see. 'No ' I screamed mentally as the vampires venom coated teeth sank into my throat.
Before the creature had time to drink my blood Adam came through the trees. He was in the form of a large silver wolf. The vampire pulled back knocking me to the ground. The venom hit me then, burning me so that I could hardly think straight.
Adam growled at the vampire as it disappeared into the trees. Adam ran after it. As hard as it was to think over the pain, I remembered the vile of holey water in my pocket. I dematerialized Rose so it wouldn't take up power. I took out the vile and poured half of the water on the bite and waited for the stinging to stop, it didn't.
I poured the rest of the holey water on the bite. The fire continued to burn inside me. I could feel it changing me. I panicked and let the tears that had welled up in my eyes out. I wanted to stay with Adam, not be killed by him.
I let the pain have me not caring what happened after I was a vampire.
twilight was my inspiration as well as the dance of gods, the lightning thift, vampire knight, van helsing, and zombie loan. i love reading and watching anime.

Voting Question: What is some good hiking gear?
I am going to Thailand and the Philippines for 3 months starting in mid-December. We are going into a village so I need to bring a backpack and a sleeping bag. I am not a hiker or a camper at all, so I have no idea what kind of light-weight gear to get. The sleeping bag needs to be small and light-weight because it will be hot. Any suggestions? Hope this is enough info, if not - let me know
