Q: Your Wikipedia (online encyclopedia) entry defines you as author, screenwriter, and accordionist. Is that how you would describe yourself?
A: I find that nothing makes people back away faster at a social gathering than "accordionist." Except perhaps "screenwriter." And, even "author" always makes people nervous, so I usually say "writer."

Q: How long have you been writing?
A: All my life really, since I was able to write all I wanted to do was write. I think largely I ended up becoming a writer because I could think of nothing else that I was good at--at all. As a kid, I always wanted to be a writer, and I had no backup plan whatsoever as an adult.

Q: Are the Baudelaire children ever going to be happy?
A: Well, they are happy on a regular basis, just not for very long. Um, are they ever going to be happy permanently? I don't know any permanently happy people, thank goodness.

Q: Okay, then is the series going to end on a happy note?
A: Well, I always remind readers of the Snicket books that happy is a comparative term, so the end will be happier than some people would think, but less happy than others.

Q: When can fans expect the final book?
A: I believe the thirteenth volume will be released in the fall of 2006, although something terrible could happen to the author at any moment and then the books would not be released at all.

Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition, and Health, Revised and Expanded Edition (California Studies in Food and Culture) In the U.S., we're bombarded with nutritional advice--the work, we assume, of reliable authorities with our best interests at heart. Far from it, says Marion Nestle, whose Food Politics absorbingly details how the food industry--through lobbying, advertising, and the co-opting of experts--influences our dietary choices to our detriment. Central to her argument is the American "paradox of plenty," the recognition that our food abundance (we've enough calories to meet every citizen's needs twice over) leads profit-fixated food producers to do everything possible to broaden their market portion, thus swaying us to eat more when we should do the opposite. The result is compromised health: epidemic obesity to start, and increased vulnerability to heart and lung disease, cancer, and stroke--reversible if the constantly suppressed "eat less, move more" message that most nutritionists shout could be heard.

Nestle, nutrition chair at New York University and editor of the 1988 Surgeon General Report, has served her time in the dietary trenches and is ideally suited to revealing how government nutritional advice is watered down when a message might threaten industry sales. (Her report on byzantine nutritional food-pyramid rewordings to avoid "eat less" recommendations is both predictable and astonishing.) She has other "war stories," too, that involve marketing to children in school (in the form of soft-drink "pouring rights" agreements, hallway advertising, and fast-food coupon giveaways), and diet-supplement dramas in which manufacturers and the government enter regulation frays, with the industry championing "free choice" even as that position counters consumer protection. Is there hope? "If we want to encourage people to eat better diets," says Nestle, "we need to target societal means to counter food industry lobbying and marketing practices as well as the education of individuals." Open Question: How can I tell if my interview went well?
I went to a hiring event for Hilton Hotels today. I was applying for front desk (4 positions open) and when I went to do the interview the lady said she thought I would be a great fit for taking Reservation calls, or in house calls (like more pillows etc). She asked if I would be okay with that and I said yes. Well there was probably a few hundred people there, and out of all three jobs she put me down for, only 7 openings are availavble. I just got back from a hiring event at a Hilton Hotel that opens up in March. I got there 15 minutes before it started, and I was #95, and by the time I was done a hour later, there was probably 250+ people there. Well this event goes on from 2pm - 7pm, and I'm wondering how they decide who to call in for a second interview? The lady I interviewed with just asked me about my job history, looked over my resume, and asked me a few questions, and said that because so many people had shown up they had to cut interviews short.. I applied for front desk, but she said because of my job history I would be a good fit for taking Reservations, and taking in-house calls for room service etc. Well I'm wondering how they decide who gets another interview. Do they take the application right after the interview and put it in a second interview pile, or in a no call back pile, or how does it work?? Thanks (more...)

Open Question: If I pay for a video to be made, where do I stand on distrubuting that video?
I contracted a film company to film an event in which another company was taking part in a team building day (team building event was run by my goodself) Can I do what I want with that video in terms of public distribution (ie You tube) or do I need the permission of the company being filmed? Please note there is NO reference to the company being filmed in the video. All advise welcome. Based in Ireland. The video was filmed at a hotel. The company staying at the hotel did not pay for the video ( i idid), they only paid for the team building event. The company were given an edited copy of the video. Open Question: hotel where we are staying keeps changing price..help?
We have an event that a bunch of people are going to and it was up to me to find aa place for 6 people at the cheepest price. well after much searching i finaly found one http://www.shannonmotorinn.com.au/index.html now we wanted the town house and thought we could put some people onthe floor but with 2 queen beds and a couch it would be an easy fit. They say the price for the town house is $165 a night but it will increase in peek time which i thought would be no more then $100 extra. so i called up and was told that they would call back with price and to see if these other people were coming in on that date. I got called back and i asked if it was ok to have 6 people even tough they said it was for 5. Well he said hang on he will call me back....he never did I call them and spoketo this very rude women who then said it would be $450 for 5 people and $500 for 6 but they wont let us have 6. I said hang on your website prices say different then she yelled at me that it will cost $500, said that it says on the websit only $15 extra a person. she yelled then i hung up. well my partner called up to book and they said it was $300 even with the extra person, so he said he will call back after he confirmed. after he called back to book they said it was $300 and $3500 with the extra person. he has booked and paid $150 disposit but we were once again abused by the women so we asked if we could cancle, she said we wont get the money back even though its 5 days inadvance warning. so what do i do?i want our money back and to report these people for changing the price everytime, they say its $165 pp a night but on the webite it says different. this is in victoria in australia so where can i report them? and get our money back (more...)
